Traditional sauna decisions: placement, seats, electric or wood heat, heater package

Traditional saunas, the stone-heated part of Topture's home saunas, narrow to a shortlist through four decisions:

• Indoors or in the yard. A traditional sauna can go inside a house: the indoor models here, all heated by an electric heater, are gathered in indoor traditional saunas. Choose one of the outdoor traditional saunas for the yard.
• Seats. The indoor traditional saunas in this collection seat one to five people, so a group of six or more is choosing among its outdoor models.
• Electric or wood-burning. Choose an electric heater if the sauna will have its own circuit; to heat with wood and no electrical connection, start with the outdoor wood-fired saunas.
• Heater included or a package. A traditional sauna here from SunRay, ThermaSol, Kohler or Finnmark comes with its heater, and SunRay says every one of its traditional saunas ships with a Harvia heater. Dundalk LeisureCraft, True North and SaunaLife leave the heater to a package picked on the product page, one marked Recommended, which lets you choose among the heater packages listed for each model.

Traditional sauna heaters: electric or wood-burning

A traditional sauna's heater warms the room and a load of stones, and water thrown on the hot stones adds the humidity: Harvia's heater manual says the air in a sauna room becomes dry as it warms, so water is thrown on the heated stones to reach a suitable level of humidity.

The Recommended package on Dundalk LeisureCraft and True North traditional saunas is always a HUUM DROP electric heater, and on 11 of the 17 current SaunaLife models it is one too. Heaters for a room built from scratch are in sauna heaters.

At Topture, every True North sauna, 11 of the 13 Dundalk LeisureCraft outdoor saunas and four SaunaLife models can be ordered with a wood-burning stove package, and the ThermaSol Nordic Misty comes in electric and wood-burning versions.

For a grid-powered traditional sauna, SunRay lists a 240 V circuit for its traditional saunas, likening it to an electric dryer's, and the UKU control in the HUUM DROP packages goes on a dedicated circuit, its US manual says. Your licensed electrician sizes the breaker and wire from the manual that ships with the heater and your local code.

How much does a traditional sauna cost?

A traditional sauna at Topture costs from $3,496 for the Sunray Baldwin 2-Person Indoor Traditional Sauna 200SN, with its Harvia heater in the price, to $75,028 for the ThermaSol Ombra 4-5 Person Outdoor Sauna Cabin, which comes with a 10.5 kW Harvia Virta heater.

Compare traditional saunas with the heater counted in: one sold with heater packages costs its price plus the package chosen, and a SaunaLife CL4G, for example, also adds $950 of SaunaLife freight to its kit price. An outdoor model then has costs on top, such as the base and the electrical run, set out in what an outdoor sauna costs beyond its price.

Traditional sauna delivery and assembly

Delivery is by freight to the curb at an appointment booked ahead, and most traditional saunas arrive as kits. ThermaSol's outdoor cabins and the SaunaLife G6 arrive fully assembled instead, and ThermaSol says its outdoor cabins need a forklift or crane for placement, so raise site-access questions before you order.

An outdoor traditional sauna stands on a level base: SunRay's traditional outdoor manual says to place the sauna on a sturdy level surface such as a concrete pad, wood deck or pavers, never directly on the ground.
