Barrel Saunas: The Classic Approach

At this capacity, barrel saunas need to be long — typically 9 to 10 feet — to fit eight people on the benches. The barrel shape heats efficiently because there's less dead air volume at the top compared to a flat-ceiling cabin. Rain and snow shed naturally off the curved walls. The trade-off at this size is headroom — taller bathers on the upper bench may feel it. The curved walls also take some getting used to compared to a flat-wall room.

Two-Room and Cube Styles: More Room, More Options

If you want a separate changing room or a proper two-tier bench layout with distinct heat zones, look at SaunaLife's two larger models. The SaunaLife G11 is a two-room barrel — Thermo-Spruce staves drawn together with steel bands under a shingled roof — with a two-tier sauna room, a changing room of the same size and a covered porch. At $14,990 it's the premium option in this category, but you're getting two functional rooms and a covered porch in one structure.

For a more modern look, the SaunaLife CL12GCP is an 8 person outdoor cube sauna with a bronze-glass rear picture window, a changeroom, and clean architectural lines. At $10,990 it sits between the True North models and the G11 on price while delivering a design-forward aesthetic that works as a backyard statement piece. Both the G11 and CL12GCP ship as kits with Thermo-Spruce and Thermo-Aspen construction.

Pod Saunas: A Different Shape Entirely

Pods split the difference between barrels and cabins. They've got a distinctive rounded profile with more usable interior space than a barrel of the same footprint. The True North Large Pod seats 4 to 8 people depending on the length you choose (8', 9', or 10'), with prices starting at $10,623. The True North Pod covers a similar range starting at $9,604. Both are available in White Cedar and Red Cedar, and both offer optional porch configurations.

If you're working with a tighter footprint but still need 8 person capacity, a pod is worth a close look. The rounded shape gives you more vertical clearance than a barrel without the full square footage of a cabin.

Foundation and Site Prep for an 8 Person Sauna

A sauna this size gets heavy. The SaunaLife CL12GCP weighs 3,100 lbs assembled and the G11 ships at 3,196 lbs crated, before you add heater stones and eight adults. A reinforced concrete slab is the most reliable foundation — it handles the weight, stays level over time, and won't shift with freeze-thaw cycles. A compacted gravel pad works as a more affordable DIY option. If you're considering a deck, get a contractor to confirm it can support the full loaded weight concentrated on the sauna's footprint.

Plan for 2 to 3 feet of clearance on all sides for ventilation, maintenance access, and fire safety. Check each product page for the exterior dimensions so you can map the footprint to your yard before ordering.

Heater Sizing for Large Saunas

An 8 person sauna has a large interior volume, and the heater needs to match. SaunaLife recommends a 9 kW Harvia Cilindro for the G11 (10.5 kW is also offered) and offers the CL12GCP with packages from 10.5 kW to 13 kW; True North lists 280 to 311 cubic feet of interior volume for its dedicated 9- and 10-foot barrels (254 to 283 for the Schooner at those lengths). You'll want a 240V dedicated circuit — this isn't optional at this size — and a licensed electrician should handle the installation. Assembly and What's Included

Every 8 person sauna in this collection ships as a kit with the structure, benches, door, and hardware. Most models don't include a heater — that's by design, so you can choose the heater that matches your preferences and electrical setup rather than being locked into whatever the manufacturer bundles. Two people can typically assemble a barrel sauna in a weekend. The models with changing rooms take longer: SaunaLife rates the G11 as a two-day build for two, and the three-room CL12GCP needs more help and time than a single-room cabin. A level surface needs to be prepped before the kit arrives.
