What does full spectrum mean on a sauna?

Finnmark Designs calls the FD-1, FD-2 and FD-3 full spectrum, and each pairs two kinds of infrared heater: Spectrum Plus™ heaters, which Finnmark says produce mid and far infrared at 6 to 14 microns, and Spectrum Carbon heaters, which it describes as long-wave, far-infrared carbon panels.

Finnmark documents no way to switch the infrared bands separately on the FD-1, FD-2 or FD-3: the manuals' control panel sets temperature, timer, lighting and music, and the Finnmark app has one "Sauna" switch that turns on the heaters.

Saunas filed as far infrared are in far infrared saunas, and far infrared and full spectrum saunas compared covers which kind of heat suits which buyer.

Full spectrum infrared saunas compared

The three full spectrum infrared saunas in this collection, all by Finnmark Designs. Seats are Finnmark's rating; the infrared heater rating and the power supply are as Finnmark's manuals give them; prices are each sauna's lowest current price; freight is to the contiguous United States.
Model Seats Infrared heater rating Power supply From Freight
Finnmark FD-1 | 1-Person Full-Spectrum Infrared Sauna 1 1,450 W 120 V, dedicated circuit $4,695 Included
Finnmark FD-2 | 2-Person Full-Spectrum Infrared Sauna 2 1,750 W 120 V, dedicated circuit $5,995 Included
Finnmark FD-3 Full Spectrum Infrared Sauna | 4-Person Infrared Sauna 3–4 3,150 W 240 V, dedicated circuit $6,495 Included
  • For one person: start with the FD-1, which Finnmark rates for one.
  • For two people: choose the FD-2, which Finnmark rates for two.
  • For three or four people: choose the FD-3, which Finnmark rates for three to four and which needs a dedicated 240 V circuit.
  • For a heater with stones as well as infrared: compare hybrid saunas instead.

Full spectrum infrared sauna checklist: power supply, placement and assembly

  • Power supply: Finnmark's manuals require a dedicated circuit for each of the FD-1, FD-2 and FD-3, at 120 V or 240 V depending on the model, with no other devices on the same circuit. Your licensed electrician sizes the breaker and wire from the sauna's manual and your local code.
  • Placement: Finnmark's manuals say its FD saunas are intended for indoor use as freestanding units, not built into any structure, on a solid surface in a dry area with at least 3 inches of clearance above and on all sides, and suggest a basement, garage, spare bedroom or new extension. Placed outdoors, an FD sauna needs Finnmark's outdoor cover and an awning or overhang on sturdy, dry, level ground, and Finnmark says placing it outside without the cover voids the warranty.
  • Assembly: Bathing Brands, Finnmark's distributor, ships the FD saunas on a wooden pallet, and the FD-1, FD-2 and FD-3 manuals show each arriving as prefabricated panels, bench parts and a power supply that are screwed together on site with a screwdriver and a level. The same manuals say installation needs at least two physically able people and state "Professional installation required".
  • EMF: Finnmark's manuals list its Spectrum Plus™ infrared heaters as "Low EMF/ELF"; each maker's EMF wording is collected in low EMF infrared saunas.

Full spectrum infrared sauna temperature and heat-up

Finnmark's manuals give 170°F as the maximum temperature setting for the FD-1, FD-2 and FD-3, and note that it may not be reached, depending on room temperature, air flow and placement. The same manuals allow about 15 to 20 minutes for these saunas to warm to a comfortable temperature and 55 to 60 minutes to reach 170°F, with warm-up varying with the air temperature around them.

Full spectrum infrared sauna prices and delivery

Full spectrum infrared saunas here run from $4,695 for the FD-1 to $6,495 for the FD-3, and none of the three has a heater package to choose. Freight to the contiguous United States is included on all three; they travel by freight to the curb on a delivery appointment, so raise site-access questions before you order.

Topture is an authorized Finnmark Designs retailer, and each sauna here includes the applicable manufacturer's warranty, subject to the manufacturer's terms, with Topture helping on troubleshooting and warranty coordination. Delivery, freight protection and support are set out on the infrared saunas page.
