What "2 person" means for an indoor sauna

A 2 person indoor sauna is a cabin its maker sizes for two people inside the house, and the seat figures in this collection run from one-to-two up to five. SunRay rates the Sedona for one to two, and the Lumaria comes from ThermaSol in two sizes, Medium for 2–3 people and Large for 4–5.

2 person indoor saunas compared

The makers' seat figures narrow a 2 person indoor sauna in one of two ways:

• Two people most days. Choose a 2 person indoor sauna its maker sizes for two, or for one to two; Dundalk LeisureCraft, for example, says its Element Nook comfortably seats 1–2.
• A third guest now and then, or more seats. Choose a model that seats more than two or comes in a size that does, such as the Dundalk Element Loft, which Dundalk says seats 2–3 people comfortably.

Fitting a 2 person indoor sauna into a room

Floor space for a 2 person indoor sauna here runs from 36 by 42 inches to 84.75 by 64.75 inches among the models this page gives an outside size for; for a shallow alcove, start with the SunRay Aston, which SunRay lists at 54 inches wide but just 36 inches deep. Height matters in a basement: Dundalk lists every Element model at just over 88 inches, against 75 to 83.1 inches for the other models sized on this page, so measure to the lowest beam or duct before choosing a Dundalk, and for a model this page gives no size for, check its height on the product page.

The makers set different room conditions for a 2 person indoor sauna. Finnmark's manuals ask for a solid surface in a dry area with at least 3 inches of clearance above and on every side, and suggest a basement, attic, garage, playroom, spare bedroom or new extension for the FD saunas. For its indoor infrared saunas, SunRay's manual names a dry area and a fairly level surface, adding a floor separator on a damp floor; Kohler asks for an indoor spot with access to conditioned air, and ThermaSol for a dry, climate-controlled space. For a garage or attic, Finnmark names both, while a space without heating or cooling falls outside Kohler's and ThermaSol's conditions.

2 person indoor saunas by heat type

A 2 person indoor sauna in this collection heats with infrared, with a sauna heater, or with infrared and a stone heater in one cabin, and that choice sets the temperature, the wiring and who picks the heater:

• Far infrared, from SunRay. SunRay builds carbon far-infrared heaters into its three indoor infrared cabins here, and its manual gives these saunas an adjustable temperature range of 64–140°F. Choose one of these three if that range suits you and you want far infrared without a stone heater.
• Full spectrum, from Finnmark. The FD-2 is the model here that Finnmark calls full spectrum, pairing Spectrum Plus heaters, which Finnmark says emit mid and far infrared, with Spectrum Carbon far-infrared panels on the side walls; Finnmark's manual gives 170°F as its maximum temperature setting. Choose it for more than far infrared without a stone heater.
• Infrared and a stone heater. The Finnmark FD-4 Trinity is the hybrid here: Finnmark combines Spectrum Plus infrared heaters with a 1.9 kW Harvia Vega Compact heater with stones in one cabin, and describes the steam as water splashed onto the heater's rocks. Choose it if one sauna has to offer both infrared and hot stones; see also indoor hybrid saunas.
• Traditional, heater included. SunRay's three traditional cabins here come with a Harvia electric heater, Bathing Brands says the Kohler C1 kits include a FERO heater with sauna stones and a heater guard, and ThermaSol includes a 9 kW Harvia Virta heater with the Lumaria. SunRay says the Aston's heater reaches up to 180°F. For a sauna whose heater is already chosen for you, pick one of these.
• Traditional, heater package. The SaunaLife X2 and Dundalk's three Element models are sold with a choice of electric heater packages from HUUM and Harvia, plus Saunum on the X2, and on all four the one marked Recommended is a HUUM DROP. The X2 itself is sold without a heater. Choose among these four when you want to settle the heater and its controls yourself; Wi-Fi controls are among the options.

How much does a 2 person indoor sauna cost?

Ranked by lowest current price, the 2 person indoor saunas here start with the SunRay Evansport at $2,698 and end with the ThermaSol Lumaria at $21,276. SunRay's six cabins fill most of the first half of that ranking, and the two Kohler C1 kits and the Lumaria are its last three.

Of the 15 saunas here, 13 include freight within the contiguous United States. The X2 is charged SaunaLife's freight on top, whatever the order value, and freight for ThermaSol saunas is quoted per order. To compare a 2 person indoor sauna like for like, add to the X2's price its heater package and that freight charge, add the freight quote to the Lumaria, check on the Dundalk Element product pages whether the price shown includes a heater, and allow for the electrical work the room needs.

Wiring a 2 person indoor sauna: 120 V or 240 V

Whether a 2 person indoor sauna needs a 240 V line depends on its heat. SunRay lists its indoor infrared saunas for a 110–120 V supply and says no other appliance should share the sauna's outlet, and Finnmark's manuals ask for a dedicated 120 V circuit for the FD-2 and for the FD-4's infrared side. SunRay's traditional saunas each take a dedicated 220–240 V circuit, which SunRay likens to an electric dryer's; Kohler lists the C1 for 220–240 V on one dedicated circuit; and ThermaSol lists the Lumaria for a 240 V single-phase supply on a dedicated circuit.

On the SaunaLife X2 and the Dundalk Element models, the heater package you choose sets the supply, and its manual gives the figures. Finnmark puts the FD-4's Harvia heater at 15.9 A on 120 V but sets no circuit for it, and its manual's heater step ends by passing the Harvia manual to a licensed electrician.

A room without a 240 V circuit rules out the SunRay, Kohler and ThermaSol traditional models and points to the SunRay infrared cabins or the FD-2, each on a dedicated 120 V outlet or circuit, or to the FD-4 if its Harvia heater can be wired in addition to its dedicated infrared circuit. Your licensed electrician sizes the breaker and wire from the sauna's manual, the heater's manual where the sauna has a stone heater, and your local code.

Delivery, doorways and assembly for a 2 person indoor sauna

A 2 person indoor sauna ships by freight to the curb on a booked delivery appointment; an adult 18 or older signs the Bill of Lading, and most shipments come with a liftgate. Getting it from the curb to the room is part of the plan, so raise site-access questions before you order. Who unloads differs by maker: for the X2, Bathing Brands' driver delivers to the curb only and lowers the items to ground level; for the Lumaria, Bathing Brands says a residential delivery is offloaded by the freight company, with no forklift needed; and Dundalk LeisureCraft's shipping terms leave unloading the crate to the buyer, not the trucking company.

SunRay packs its pre-built panels in cardboard boxes that pass through any door 24 inches or wider, and Kohler ships the C1 on one or two large pallets, in sections that carry through interior corridors and doorways, for assembly where it will stand.

SunRay says two people lock its panels together with a Phillips screwdriver and no contractor, and that its indoor infrared saunas assemble in under an hour; SaunaLife says two people install the X2 in 4 to 6 hours; and Dundalk ships the Element models as ready-to-assemble panels. Finnmark's manuals say professional installation is required for the FD saunas, Kohler recommends a professional installer for the C1, and ThermaSol's manuals call for 2 to 4 people to install the Lumaria. For a do-it-yourself build by two people, start with the SunRay models or the X2, and budget for an installer on the Finnmark and Kohler models.
