What a Rectangular Steam Shower Is

A rectangular steam shower is a self-contained walk-in cabin with a straight back wall, a flat front glass panel or sliding door, and a built-in electric steam generator. Unlike a corner unit, which has a square footprint for a 90-degree corner, the rectangular footprint sits flat against a single wall, where a standard tub or shower often sits. That's the practical appeal: if it replaces a shower or tub on the same wall, the supply and drain may already be close to the right location.

Every unit in this collection is self-contained: the cabin, generator, plumbing fixtures, glass door and electronic controls ship together as one system, packed as components for assembly in the bathroom. It connects to hot and cold water, a drain sized to its spec sheet and a dedicated 220V circuit, following its installation manual. These units are self-contained enclosures, so they do not require the same custom steam-room waterproofing system as a site-built tiled steam room, and there is no separate generator or steam-proof door to source.

Rectangular vs Corner vs Walk-In: Which Layout Fits

Shape decides everything else. Three things determine which footprint works in your bathroom: where the existing plumbing rough-in sits, how much wall space you have, and how you want to use the cabin inside.

A rectangular walk-in unit in this collection needs 47 to 59 inches of straight wall and 32 to 35.4 inches of depth, and the units stand 85 to 89 inches tall. The advantage is interior room: more natural standing space, room for seating, and the option for a wider single-door or sliding-door entry. Three of the five models in our 2-person steam shower collection are rectangular walk-ins.

Corner units are the better call if you want to use an open corner or keep your existing tub on one wall. They slot into a 90-degree wall corner and use less floor area; the smallest in our lineup is 35" x 35".

If you want a tub in the mix too (soak first, then steam), look at the steam shower tub combo units instead. Mesa's WS-905 (60" x 33") puts a jetted whirlpool tub inside a rectangular footprint, so you don't have to choose between the two.

Common Dimensions and Sizing

The rectangular walk-ins in this collection come in three widths. The narrowest is the Ariel Platinum DZ959F8 at 47" x 35", the tightest install here. The Mesa WS-803L is 54" x 35" and is set up for two, with dual shower wands and fold-up seating. At 59" wide are the Ariel Platinum DZ956F8 and DZ972F8 (59" x 32") and the DZ961F8 (59" x 35.4", with two stools). The tub combos listed here differ in shape: the Mesa WS-905 is rectangular (60" x 33"), while the WS-702A (61" x 61") has a square, neo-angle footprint.

Depth is 32 to 35.4 inches. The units stand 85 to 89 inches tall and most product pages add 2 inches for the ventilation exhaust pipe, so measure from the finished floor to the ceiling and check it against the specific model before ordering. Features Worth Understanding

Steam generator wattage. Mesa uses a 3kW steam generator on every model here and rates it for cabins up to 75 cubic feet. Ariel Platinum uses a 6kW high-efficiency generator on every rectangular model, including the DZ959F8 and the larger DZ972F8. The steam timer is adjustable (Ariel Platinum runs 5–50 minutes with a 30-minute default; most Mesa models default to 45 minutes), and many models shut off automatically after 60 minutes.

Body jets. Body jet counts vary by model: six acupressure jets on the Ariel Platinum DZ959F8 and DZ961F8, 12 on the Mesa WS-803L and 20 on the Ariel Platinum DZ972F8. The tub combos add whirlpool jets in the tub. The feature list on each product page gives the count for that model.

Chromotherapy and ambient light. Every Ariel Platinum model lists LED chromotherapy lighting; the Mesa models use overhead lighting and blue mood lighting instead. The higher-end Ariel Platinum DZ972F8 adds dual rainfall ceiling showers and a hardwood ceiling and floor.

FM radio and aromatherapy. An FM radio is listed on every model here. Every Ariel Platinum model lists an aromatherapy system; on the Mesa side, aromatherapy is listed on the WS-803L and WS-905.

Glass and finish. Mesa units use tempered safety glass in clear or blue tint, and many models are sold in both. The Ariel Platinum rectangular models come in a white or black finish. Glass thickness isn't listed on the product pages, so ask us if it matters for your project.

Install Requirements

Plumbing. Hot and cold supply connections (1/2" on the Mesa and Ariel Platinum spec sheets) and a drain sized to the model's spec sheet: Mesa lists a 1-1/2" drain intake and includes a pre-cut drain with a 1-1/2" flexible drain hose, and the Ariel Platinum DZ959F8 and DZ961F8 list a 2" drain intake with a 1-1/2" flexible hose. Supply positions and water pressure are specified in each model's installation manual. If you're replacing a standard shower or tub, the supply and drain may already be in the right position. If you're moving the rough-in to a new wall, plan on a plumber for the reroute to local plumbing code. Left-hand and right-hand orientations matter: the Ariel Platinum DZ959F8 and DZ961F8 and the Mesa WS-905 are sold as separate left and right versions, and the Mesa WS-803L is reversible, so confirm which side your plumbing exits before ordering.

Electrical. Every steam shower here is listed at 220V on its product page and needs a dedicated circuit with the ground-fault or leakage protection its manual specifies, installed by a licensed electrician. Mesa's tub-combo spec sheets call for two dedicated circuits rather than one. Plan the circuit early so it's ready for installation day.

Breaker size, conductor size and circuit configuration must be taken from the installation manual for the specific steam shower. Two steam generators with the same kW rating can have different electrical requirements. Every Topture steam shower page lists the manufacturer specifications for that model. Final installation must be verified by a licensed electrician.

Ventilation and waterproofing. These units are self-contained enclosures, so they do not require the same custom steam-room waterproofing system as a site-built tiled steam room. That doesn't mean the room around them can be ignored: follow the installation manual, local plumbing and electrical code, and the floor and subfloor requirements — a level floor that can carry the unit's weight, with water-resistant flooring (tile, LVT, or a waterproofed substrate) around it. The manuals also recommend a bathroom exhaust fan to clear residual humidity after sessions.

How to Choose

Work through the decision in this order: confirm you have a flat wall section of 47 to 59 inches and ceiling height for the unit (85"–89") plus about 2" for the exhaust pipe. Decide between Mesa's lower-price feature stack and Ariel Platinum's 6kW generator with aromatherapy and chromotherapy as standard. Pick a width that matches how many people will use the cabin (the Mesa WS-803L at 54" and the Ariel Platinum DZ961F8 at 59" are set up for two).
