What a Rectangular Steam Shower Is

A rectangular steam shower is a self-contained walk-in cabin with a straight back wall, a flat front glass panel or sliding door, and a built-in electric steam generator. Unlike a pentagon-shaped corner unit, the rectangular footprint sits flat against any single wall, exactly where a standard tub or shower used to live. That's the practical appeal: it drops into the existing plumbing layout of most master bathrooms without rearranging the room.

Every unit in this collection ships as one piece: cabin, generator, plumbing fixtures, glass door, and electronic controls. You hook up hot and cold water lines, a 2-inch drain, and a dedicated 220V circuit. Then you steam. No tile contractor, no waterproof membrane, no custom steam-proof door to source. That's the whole reason these prefab walk-in units exist instead of a custom-built steam room.

Rectangular vs Corner vs Walk-In: Which Layout Fits

Shape decides everything else. Three things determine which footprint works in your bathroom: where the existing plumbing rough-in sits, how much wall space you have, and how you want to use the cabin inside.

A rectangular walk-in unit needs roughly 47 to 60 inches of straight wall, 32 to 36 inches of depth, and 85 to 89 inches of ceiling height. The advantage is interior room: flat benches, more natural standing space, and the option for a wider single-door or sliding-door entry. Most of the 2-person steam shower models in our lineup are rectangular for this reason. Two people don't fit comfortably inside a corner pentagon, but they do fit inside a 59-inch-wide rectangle.

Corner units are the better call if you're working with a small bathroom under 60 square feet or you want to keep your existing tub on one wall. They slot into a 90-degree wall corner and use less floor area, but the diagonal pentagon shape feels tighter inside.

Common Dimensions and Sizing

Rectangular steam showers in this collection run three common width bands. Around 47 inches wide is the entry size, best for a single bather and the tightest install. The Ariel Platinum DZ959F8 is the model most buyers land on at this size. The mid range is 54 inches wide, where the Mesa WS-801L sits: wider interior, room to stretch out a bit. The 59 to 60 inch band is where two people fit comfortably and where most of the Mesa walk-in and tub-combo units live (WS-803L, WS-701A, WS-7012A).

Depth is usually 32 to 36 inches. Ceiling height is 85 to 89 inches, which means you'll want at least 90 inches of clear height in the bathroom. Measure from finished floor to ceiling joist before ordering. Doorway clearance matters too: most units ship in pre-assembled panels that need to clear a 30-inch bathroom door. Features Worth Understanding

Steam generator wattage. Mesa rectangular units ship with a 3kW steam generator standard. Ariel Platinum stepped up to a 6kW high-efficiency generator on most of their walk-in models, including the DZ959F8 and the larger DZ972F8. More wattage means faster steam buildup in a larger cabin volume and stronger humidity hold. A 3kW generator fills a 40 to 60 cubic foot cabin in about 5 to 8 minutes; a 6kW generator handles the bigger 59-inch cabins in similar time without losing density.

Body jets and acupressure. Six acupressure body jets are standard across nearly every Mesa and Ariel Platinum rectangular unit. The jets sit at lumbar and shoulder height and run off the same supply line as the rainhead and handheld. They're hydrotherapy, not pressure-washing: comfortable, not aggressive.

Chromotherapy and ambient light. Every rectangular model in this collection includes LED chromotherapy lighting in the ceiling, with fixed-color and slow-cycle modes. The higher-end Ariel Platinum DZ972F8 adds a backlit ceiling light panel and a dual-rainfall ceiling head, visible upgrades over the standard single rainhead.

Bluetooth, FM radio, aromatherapy. Built-in Bluetooth speakers (Ariel Platinum) or FM radio with auxiliary input (Mesa) come standard. An aromatherapy reservoir holds essential oils (eucalyptus and peppermint are the common picks) that the steam carries into the cabin.

Glass thickness. Mesa walk-in units ship with 6mm tempered safety glass. Ariel Platinum typically uses 8mm tempered glass. Thicker glass feels more solid at the door close and dampens sound slightly. Both are fully tempered to safety standards.

Install Requirements

Plumbing. Hot and cold supply lines (standard 1/2-inch), a 2-inch P-trap drain, and water pressure between 30 and 70 PSI. Most homes already meet pressure spec. If you're replacing a standard shower or tub, the supply and drain are often already in the right position. If you're moving the rough-in to a new wall, plan on a plumber for the reroute. Left-hand and right-hand orientations matter. The WS-801L, WS-803L, and Ariel DZ959F8 all come in handed configurations, so confirm which side your plumbing exits before ordering.

Electrical. A dedicated 220V/240V circuit with a 20 to 30 amp breaker, hardwired by a licensed electrician. This is the step most DIY buyers overlook. Standard 110V outlets won't run the generator. The circuit needs to be installed and inspected before the unit arrives. Ariel Platinum's 6kW models pull more current than Mesa's 3kW units, so check the spec sheet on the specific product page for exact breaker sizing.

Ventilation. Because the cabin is sealed at the top, you don't need to waterproof the surrounding bathroom the way you would for a custom tiled steam room. That's the main reason these prefab units exist. A bathroom exhaust fan is still recommended to clear residual humidity after sessions, and the sub-floor should be tile, LVT, or another water-resistant surface.

Work through the decision in this order: confirm you have a flat wall section of 47 to 60 inches with at least 90 inches of ceiling clearance. Decide between Mesa's lower-price feature stack and Ariel Platinum's thicker glass and stronger generator. Pick a width that matches how many people will use the cabin (47 inches for single use, 59 inches for two). Confirm left-hand vs right-hand orientation against your existing plumbing exit.
