Electric Sauna Heater Packages

Electric sauna heater package contents by maker

Electric sauna heater packages from the three makers here differ in the control that comes with the heater and its stones:

• Harvia KIP with built-in controls. The package is the KIP heater, with its thermostat and timer on the heater itself, and its stones.
• Harvia with a separate control. Harvia's packages with a separate control add a Harvia Xenio control with Wi-Fi to the heater and its stones, apart from the two Club packages, whose parts are listed on their product pages.
• HUUM. Every HUUM package here pairs the heater and HUUM stones with a UKU control, either the UKU Local or the UKU Wi-Fi with a Black, Glass or Mirror panel. The HIVE 12, 15 and 18 kW packages also include HUUM's UKU Extension Box, because the UKU runs heaters up to 11 kW on its own.
• Saunum. The Air and Air L packages pair the heater and its climate-equalizing module with the AirIQ Wi-Fi control, its power unit and its door and temperature sensors, plus sauna stones.

On the HUUM and Saunum package pages, safety rails, embedding flanges, reflectors, a drip tray, deflectors, aroma oil sets and weatherproof electrical boxes are offered as add-ons, depending on the heater: they are bought with the package, not part of it.

• Choose a package if you want one order that already holds the heater, its control and its stones.
• Choose the heater alone if you already own stones or a compatible control; if you want a different control than the package lists, pair the heater with one of the sauna heater controls.

Sizing an electric sauna heater package to the room

The heater in an electric sauna heater package is sized to the room's volume: Harvia and HUUM print a minimum and a maximum room size in cubic feet for each of their heaters here, so a sauna described as "6-person" still needs its length, width and height measured first.

Each maker then adds an allowance for glass and uninsulated walls, so add it to the volume before comparing:

• Harvia. Harvia's manuals add about 3.9 cubic feet per square foot of uninsulated brick, glass block, glass, concrete or tile wall, glass doors included, and multiply a solid-log sauna's volume by 1.5.
• HUUM. HUUM's current US manuals for the CLIFF, STEEL and HIVE heaters, Minis included, add 3.3 cubic feet per square foot of uninsulated brick, tile or glass wall before you pick from the room table.
• Saunum. Saunum's Air and Air L manuals add 3.0 cubic feet per square foot of glass, tile, brick, concrete or stone, and multiply the volume by 1.5 for log, plank or stave walls without inner insulation.

With that total, two checks settle the heater's size; weighing one maker's heater against another is the job of the electric sauna heater buyer's guide.

• Choose a package whose printed room size covers the total, and rule out one whose range starts above the total or ends below it; the comparison table gives Harvia's and HUUM's ranges model by model.
• Between two Saunum sizes, take the larger heater, as Saunum's manuals say.

Electric sauna heater packages compared

Shortlist the rows whose room size covers your total, then choose between them by how the heater mounts and by its control.

Electric sauna heaters with rocks: wall-mounted or floor-standing

Every heater in these packages is a stone heater: Harvia's, HUUM's and Saunum's manuals each describe ladling water onto the hot stones. They differ in where the heater stands or hangs:

• Wall-hung, to keep the floor clear: choose Harvia's KIP, which hangs on the sauna wall from rear brackets, or HUUM's DROP, which attaches to the wall on its mounting frame.
• Floor-standing, where there is floor space: choose Harvia's Virta, Virta Combi, Cilindro or Club or HUUM's CLIFF, STEEL, HIVE Mini or HIVE, which stand on the floor; their stone loads run from 110 lb (Harvia's Virta 6 to 9 kW and Virta Combi 8 kW) to 551 lb (the HIVE).
• On legs beside a wall: choose HUUM's CLIFF Mini or STEEL Mini, which stand on legs and are fixed to the wall with a bracket.
• A free corner between wall and ceiling: choose Saunum's Air or Air L, which stand on adjustable feet centred under a hot-air intake cap fixed in that corner.

Controls and Wi-Fi in electric sauna heater packages

Harvia documents no Wi-Fi control for the KIP with built-in controls; every other package here has a separate control panel, and the makers' apps connect through the Wi-Fi versions of those controls.

• No panel to mount and no app: choose a Harvia KIP package with built-in controls.
• App control with Harvia: choose a package with a Harvia Xenio -XW control; Harvia says its MyHarvia app works with that panel for temperature and humidity control and shows the sauna's status on your phone, with features depending on the devices connected.
• App control with HUUM: choose the UKU Wi-Fi on a HUUM package; HUUM's heaters run from the HUUM mobile app through it.
• A wall panel and no app: choose the UKU Local on a HUUM package, which runs from its wall panel only.
• App control with Saunum: choose an Air or Air L package; the Saunum mobile app sets and monitors the temperature, switches on the climate function and sets its speed, and can set a scheduled start. Saunum's Air IQ manual says the heater will not start remotely or on schedule while the sauna door is open, and that the owner must first make sure nothing is on the stones or within the heater's safety distances.
• More heaters run with a Wi-Fi control: compare sauna heaters with Wi-Fi control.

Electrical supply for electric sauna heater packages

Current draw differs widely between electric sauna heater packages: Harvia lists the KIP 6 kW at 25 amps on a 240 V single-phase supply, and HUUM lists the HIVE 18 at 75 amps on 240 V. HUUM's UKU control manual says to install the control on a dedicated circuit, and that the electrical work it describes may only be performed by a licensed electrician.

• Neither a 240 V nor a 208 V supply at the sauna: rule out every package here.
• 208 V service: on three-phase, choose the Harvia Club 10 kW package or the multi-size Harvia KIP Electric Heater Package w/ Digital Controller and Wifi and Stones, the two listings here that also come in a 208 V three-phase version; HUUM's US manuals also give the CLIFF and STEEL heaters, Minis included, ratings for a 208 V supply.
• Planning the circuit: give your electrician the heater's amps from the comparison table. Your licensed electrician sizes the breaker and wire from the manual that ships with the heater and your local code.

Electric sauna heater package prices

Harvia's KIP packages with built-in controls sit at the lower end of this collection, from $1,214, and HUUM's HIVE packages at the upper end, where the HIVE 18 kW package starts at $6,471. Freight is included within the contiguous United States on all 38 packages here.

Topture sells these packages as an authorized Harvia retailer, an authorized HUUM retailer listed as an "E-shop" in HUUM's official dealer directory, and an authorized Saunum retailer, and electric sauna heaters usually ship by UPS or FedEx. More on buying sauna heaters from Topture is on the sauna heaters page.

Next steps for an electric sauna heater package: output, wood heat or sizing help

Three routes lead on from an electric sauna heater package:

• Narrow by output: once the room size points to an output, browse 6kW sauna heaters, 8kW sauna heaters or 9kW sauna heaters.
• Heat with wood instead: if you would rather fire a stove than wire a heater, compare wood-burning sauna heater packages.
• Sizing help: to match a package to your room's volume, contact Topture's Lifetime Expert Support by phone at (833) 419-1774, live chat or email at contact@topture.com.
