This is the first real decision in any sauna build, and it's mostly a lifestyle question — not a performance one. Both heat the room and the stones, and both let you throw water on the stones for steam. What differs is the experience around the heat. Heater packages that ship with their stones are grouped under sauna heaters with rocks.
Electric heaters are wired to a dedicated circuit and controlled by a thermostat: you set a temperature, the heater holds it, and it switches off on its timer. Harvia's installation manuals put heat-up at about an hour for a correctly sized heater in a properly insulated sauna. Electric heaters are usually the practical fit where reliable electrical service is available and the buyer prioritises automatic temperature control and simple day-to-day operation — no fuel to store, no ash to clean.
Wood-burning stoves deliver a different experience: a softer, more radiant heat, the crackle of a fire, the smell of burning wood. You can't hit a button and walk away. You split the wood, light the firebox and keep feeding it in the loads the stove's manual specifies. Wood-burning stoves make more sense for off-grid or rural installations, or for buyers who specifically want the fire-tending experience and can accommodate the chimney and clearance requirements.
Size a heater by room volume, using the method published by the manufacturer of the heater you are considering. Multiply the interior length × width × height in feet to get cubic feet, add that manufacturer's allowance for uninsulated surfaces, and choose a heater whose manufacturer-rated room range includes the result. Harvia's manuals add 1.2 m³ per m² of uninsulated surface — about 3.94 cu ft for every square foot of glass, stone, tile, brick or concrete — and multiply the volume of a log sauna by 1.5. HUUM's manuals add 3.3 cu ft per square foot of uninsulated glass, brick or tile wall. Topture's sauna heater size calculator does the arithmetic, and the manufacturer's rated range for the specific heater is final.
Manufacturer-rated room ranges for the electric heaters in this collection (240V):
Stay inside the rated range. A heater rated below your room's effective volume heats slowly and recovers slowly after water is thrown on the stones, and HUUM's limited warranty excludes damage from a product that is incorrectly dimensioned for its use. If your room falls within the rated range of two sizes, check both heaters' installation manuals or ask Topture's team before you choose.
HUUM is an Estonian manufacturer whose heaters are designed, engineered and made in Estonia. Its DROP and CLIFF series wrap the heating elements in clean steel shells with massive stone baskets — the HUUM Drop holds 121 lbs of stones, the HUUM CLIFF holds 165 lbs, and the flagship HIVE takes up to 551 lbs. More stones = more thermal mass = softer, steamier heat. HUUM also makes the UKU controller system, which pairs over WiFi to any HUUM heater. See the full HUUM lineup for every model and stone capacity.
Harvia is a Finnish manufacturer founded in 1950. The KIP, Cilindro, Virta and Spirit series cover 4.5kW to 10.5kW, and the Virta Pro and Club go to 20kW and 15kW. Controllers range from a simple built-in dial (KIP-B) to the full Xenio WiFi system. Harvia fits buyers who want the widest range of outputs and body styles, a choice between built-in and external controls, or a three-phase version for a commercial building (Club, Virta 10.5kW, Virta Pro 20kW). Their bundled heater packages come with stones, controller, and all the parts you actually need.
Saunum is an Estonian manufacturer built around one problem: uneven heat. Hot air collects under the ceiling, so the lower bench runs cooler. Saunum's Air and Air L heaters use what Saunum describes as a patented air-mixing system that draws hot air from under the ceiling, mixes it with cooler air from near the floor and sends it back down through the room. They run only on Saunum's AirIQ control. Worth considering if you've ever sat in a sauna and thought "why are my legs freezing."
Amerec's Junior heaters cover the smallest rooms in this collection: the Amerec Junior 2.2kW (120V, rated 45–100 cu ft) and Junior 3kW (240V, 70–150 cu ft) for one-person rooms. Both need Amerec's SaunaLogic2 control and contactor box, sold separately.
Buy a sauna heater from a seller you can confirm is authorized by the manufacturer, and only once the heater is sized for your room and its controller, stones and electrical supply are accounted for. Authorization matters for the warranty: Harvia's limited warranty applies only to new heaters sold by Harvia or its official dealers, and HUUM's only to new products sold by HUUM or its authorized dealers and their resellers. Which channel suits you depends on how settled your choice already is.
| Buying channel | Best when | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer direct | You have already chosen the exact heater and that manufacturer sells direct | Whether it sells direct at all; you can compare only its own range |
| Marketplace or general retailer | You are reordering a simple model you already know | Authorized-retailer status, warranty, controller compatibility, stones, electrical requirements |
| Specialist multi-brand sauna retailer | You are comparing brands, sizing for glass or uninsulated walls, or pairing a heater with a sauna from another maker | Which brands it is authorized for, and the sizing and support it offers before and after purchase |
A specialist multi-brand retailer is most useful when the questions are still open: HUUM vs. Harvia vs. Saunum, sizing a room that has glass or uninsulated walls, choosing between built-in, external and Wi-Fi controls, working out which stones and how many, checking the electrical requirements, or fitting a heater to a sauna built by a different manufacturer. Topture is a U.S.-focused multi-brand retailer and an authorized retailer for Harvia, HUUM, Saunum and Amerec. Its sauna heater size calculator adds an allowance for glass and other uninsulated surfaces, and its comparison guides include HUUM vs. Harvia and the HUUM, Harvia and Saunum heater comparison. The manufacturer's warranty applies, subject to its terms; Topture helps with troubleshooting and warranty coordination.
A sauna heater is rarely a single-box purchase. Most setups need four things: the heater itself, stones, a controller, and proper wiring. Here's what's usually included versus what you have to buy separately.
Stones are usually sold separately unless you're buying a bundled package. Loads range from 44 lbs for a Harvia KIP to 551 lbs (250 kg) for a HUUM HIVE; each product page gives the quantity for that heater. Stones are not interchangeable — use olivine diabase sauna rocks from HUUM or Harvia, not decorative rocks from a landscaping store. The wrong stone cracks, crumbles, or pops under thermal stress.
Controllers come in three flavors: built-in (basic dial, on the heater itself — simplest), external wall-mounted (digital display with timer), and WiFi-enabled (phone app control, remote start). HUUM heaters require a separate UKU controller. Most Harvia heaters have a built-in option (KIP-B, Cilindro-HB) or external (Xenio series). If remote start from your phone is the priority, skip straight to our WiFi-controlled heaters.
Accessories like safety rails, embedding flanges (for bench-embedded install), and water buckets don't ship with most heaters. Check the accessories page once you've picked your heater.
Settle the electrical supply before you choose a heater. Sauna heaters are wired to a dedicated circuit; they do not plug into a standard outlet.
Current draw can be estimated from heater output and voltage, but breaker size, conductor size and circuit configuration must be taken from the installation manual for the specific heater. Two heaters with the same kW rating can have different electrical requirements. Every Topture heater page lists the manufacturer specifications for that model. Final installation must be verified by a licensed electrician.
Before you click "buy" on any heater above 6kW, check your panel's capacity and the distance to the sauna with your electrician. Our full electrical requirements walkthrough covers what to ask — read it before an electrician quote, not after.
Every electric heater Topture sells must be connected by a licensed electrician. The manufacturers' warranties depend on it: Harvia's and HUUM's require installation by a licensed, qualified electrician with proof of that installation, and Saunum's requires connection by a qualified electrician.
