• A tight room. Start with the Aspen or the Savannah, which SunRay lists at 59 by 47 inches outside, the smallest footprint of the four.
• Ceiling height. The FD-5 Trinity XL is 83.1 inches tall outside and SunRay's two indoor cabins 75, and Finnmark's manuals also ask for a clearance of at least 3 inches above the sauna and on all sides, so the power cord stays accessible. Measure the ceiling before the FD-5 goes on your shortlist.
• Yard space. Before choosing the Grandby, measure the spot against its roof: SunRay lists the cabin at 69 by 47 by 87 inches beneath a roof with a 79 by 61-inch footprint, larger than the cabin.

3 person infrared saunas by placement, heat and wood

The four 3 person infrared saunas here differ on three questions: where the sauna stands, whether you also want hot stones, and which wood lines it:

• Indoor room or backyard. SunRay's manual says its two indoor cabins here must be placed indoors in a dry area, while SunRay builds the Grandby as a weather-sealed outdoor cabin under a metal composite roof, whose exterior its D3 manual has you reseal or repaint every year. Finnmark's manuals intend the FD saunas for indoor use and allow the FD-5 outside only under Finnmark's outdoor cover, beneath an awning or overhang, on sturdy, dry, level ground. For an open backyard, choose the Grandby, the one sauna here built as an outdoor cabin; other sizes are in outdoor infrared saunas.
• Infrared alone or with hot stones. SunRay heats its outdoor cabin with carbon far-infrared heaters and its two indoor cabins with carbon nano heaters, which its manual calls far-infrared heater elements. The FD-5 Trinity XL pairs Finnmark's Spectrum Plus heaters, which Finnmark says produce mid and far infrared, with a 4.5 kW Harvia KIP45B heater, and Finnmark describes its steam as water splashed onto that heater's rocks; the FD-5 also carries Finnmark's Spectrum Red Light LED panel, which Finnmark specifies at 650 nm. Choose the FD-5 if you want water on hot stones as well as infrared, and one of the three SunRays for carbon far-infrared heat alone.
• Hemlock or red cedar. For red cedar, choose the Savannah, which SunRay builds from western red cedar, or the FD-5, which Finnmark gives a clear A-grade Canadian Western Red Cedar interior with a Thermal Plus aspen exterior. For hemlock, choose the Aspen or the Grandby, both built by SunRay from Canadian hemlock.

How much does a 3 person infrared sauna cost?

A 3 person infrared sauna in this collection costs from $3,296 for the SunRay Aspen to $8,995 for the Finnmark FD-5 Trinity XL, and SunRay's three cabins here sit at the lower end of that range.

The price of each sauna here covers its heat source: SunRay names the carbon heaters among each cabin's inclusions, and Bathing Brands, Finnmark's distributor, lists the FD-5 with its infrared panels and sauna heater included, plus Harvia AC3000 sauna stones. Freight within the contiguous United States is included on all four, and none has a heater package to choose, so compare them on the price shown plus the electrical work, base and installation your spot needs.

Power for a 3 person infrared sauna: a dedicated 120 V outlet or a 240 V heater circuit

The three SunRay saunas here each need a 110–120 V outlet of their own: SunRay's pages call for a dedicated outlet on a circuit nothing else shares, and its manuals say no other appliance may use it. SunRay lists a 20 A circuit for all three, giving the Savannah's figure on its 2023 data sheet.

For the FD-5 Trinity XL's heater, Finnmark lists the Harvia KIP45B at 240 V and 18.8 A and marks it "Electrician Required"; Bathing Brands adds 208 V three-phase operation as an option, and Finnmark specifies no circuit for the heater, ending the Harvia heater installation with "Provide Harvia heater installation manual to licensed electrician". Ask Topture about the FD-5's infrared supply before you plan the wiring.

Rule out the FD-5 if the house cannot take a 240 V or 208 V three-phase circuit for its heater. Your licensed electrician sizes the breaker and wire from the sauna's manual, the Harvia heater's manual for a Trinity model, and your local code.

Delivery, assembly and base for a 3 person infrared sauna

Each 3 person infrared sauna here arrives by freight on a booked appointment and is delivered to the curb, with a liftgate on most shipments, and an adult of 18 or over signs the Bill of Lading. For a basement or a narrow side path, raise site-access questions before you order.

SunRay says it pre-assembles each cabin at the factory, then ships the panels on a wooden pallet in cardboard boxes that fit through any door 24 inches or wider. With a Phillips screwdriver, or a drill fitted with a Phillips bit, two people join the panels without a contractor; SunRay puts the job at about two hours for the Grandby and under an hour for each of the two indoor cabins.

The FD-5 Trinity XL comes as prefabricated panels and bench parts on a wooden pallet from Bathing Brands, Finnmark's distributor, and Finnmark's manuals state "Professional installation required", with at least two people. To assemble a 3 person infrared sauna yourselves, choose one of the SunRays.

Each maker says what its saunas should stand on: SunRay's D3 manual puts the Grandby on a level surface such as a wooden deck, concrete pad or pavers, with a waterproof barrier between the sauna floor and the surface where the site is damp or the floor sits on pavers or other ground-contact surfaces. Indoors, SunRay asks for a fairly level surface in a dry area, with a floor separator if the floor is damp, and Finnmark for a solid surface in a dry area.
