A small sauna wood stove is sized to the sauna room's volume, its length times width times height, matched against the minimum and maximum room volume its maker prints for that model.

For a small sauna wood stove, output in kilowatts does not settle the fit on its own: HUUM's 8.5 kW stove and Harvia's 16.5 kW M3 are both rated for rooms from 212 cubic feet.

Harvia's manuals and HUUM's HIVE Flow manual count glass and other uninsulated walls as extra room volume. Harvia's manuals add 1.2 m³ for each square meter of uninsulated wall such as glass, brick, concrete or tile, about 3.9 cu ft per sq ft, and multiply the volume of a solid-log sauna by 1.5. HUUM's HIVE Flow manual adds 1 m³ for each square meter of uninsulated brick, tile or glass wall, about 3.3 cu ft per sq ft.

Read the sauna room's volume, adjusted where the stove's maker says so, against the ranges here:

From 212 to about 282 cubic feet: start with the HIVE Flow Mini, the HIVE Wood 13 or the M3, or the HIVE Flow Mini LS or the M3 SL, all rated from 212 cubic feet; HUUM rates the HIVE Flow from 282 cubic feet and the HIVE Wood 17 from 283.
From about 282 to 459 cubic feet: every stove here is within its maker's range, so room size rules none of them out.
Above 459 and up to 635 cubic feet: rule out the M3 and the HIVE Wood 13, which stop at 459, and choose the stove whose upper limit covers your room: the HIVE Flow Mini (to 494), the HIVE Wood 17 (to 565) or the HIVE Flow (to 635).
Under 212 or over 635 cubic feet: rule out this collection, because no stove here is rated for the room.

Loading a small sauna wood stove from the sauna room or the next room

Most small sauna wood stoves here are loaded from inside the sauna room, with the stove and its firebox door both in the hot room.

HUUM's LS versions pass through a non-combustible wall. HUUM's US manual for the HIVE Flow LS and Mini LS puts the firebox door in the next room, where the fire is fed, and keeps the stove and its stones in the sauna. HUUM's HIVE Wood manual installs the HIVE Wood 17 LS to be heated from another room, through a non-combustible wall. Harvia designs the M3 SL for people who want to heat their sauna from another room or outside the building.

Choose a stove loaded from inside the sauna if the firebox door can open into the hot room; the Loaded from column marks them.
Choose a HUUM LS version if you want to feed the fire from the next room and the wall it passes through can be non-combustible.
Choose the Harvia M3 SL if you want to heat the sauna from another room or from outside the building; Harvia's instructions add that, with a Harvia steel chimney, the non-flammable wall it goes through must extend up to the roof.

What comes with a small sauna wood stove

A small sauna wood stove here is sold either as the stove alone or as a package. A stove-only listing comes without stones and without a chimney: HUUM's manuals list neither in the box and say the stove needs stones, Bathing Brands, Harvia's US distributor, says the M3's required stones are sold separately, and Topture's M3 listings put the chimney under what you need separately.

A HUUM package here combines the stove, its stones, a HUUM protective bed and the HUUM chimney kit you choose with it. Topture's two Harvia M3 kits here combine the M3 with Harvia's chimney kit, a protective sheath, protective bedding and stones; the black kit has Harvia's black chimney kit and adds a black chimney extension.

Topture's listings name what each HUUM package here leaves out. For the four HIVE Flow packages it is the floor plate in front of the door, and the two LS versions among them also leave out the mounting collar. For the HIVE Wood 13 package it is extension pipes.

On price, Harvia's M3 stove alone sits at the lower end of this collection and the HUUM packages here toward the upper end; the table shows each listing's lowest current price.

Choose a package if you want the stones, the protective bedding and a chimney kit bought with the stove as one item; the HIVE Wood 17 package and packages for other wood stoves are under wood burning sauna heater packages.
Choose the stove alone if you already have a chimney that suits the stove or are buying the chimney and the stones separately, and budget for the stones either way.

Installing a small sauna wood stove: chimney route, floor and safety distances

A small sauna wood stove needs a chimney that runs out through the roof or a wall. HUUM's HIVE Flow manual lets only a certified installation expert connect the stove to the flue, from the top or the back, and HUUM's HIVE Wood manual leaves the chimney connection to a specialist and rules out a flue shared with other furnaces. Harvia's M3 connects to a Harvia steel chimney through its upper opening, or to a masonry flue, and is not suitable for a shared flue.

HUUM names its chimney kits for the route they take: thru-angled ceiling, thru-flat or curved roof, thru-wall, and thru-wall backside connection. Chimney kits are listed under sauna chimney kits.

HUUM's HIVE Flow manual puts the stove on a non-combustible floor with enough load-bearing capacity, such as concrete at least 2 in thick; on a combustible floor it requires a HUUM thermal plate or another non-combustible base, with the air gap HUUM specifies, plus a sheet-metal plate covering the floor in front of the door. HUUM's HIVE Wood manual asks for a non-combustible surface with the required carrying capacity. Harvia's M3 manual asks for Harvia protective bedding under the stove on a tile floor (or similar heat radiation protection) and on a floor of inflammable material, and for nonflammable protection in front of the door on an inflammable floor.

For the HIVE Wood and the M3, wiring stays out of the stove's safety area: HUUM's HIVE Wood manual allows no electrical equipment or wiring there, and Harvia's M3 manual no electrical devices, wires or inflammable materials within its safety distances.

Rule out a wood stove for a small sauna with no way to run a chimney through its roof or a wall. Your installer works from the manual that ships with the stove for the chimney connection, the floor and the safety distances.
