How Red Light Therapy Works

Red light therapy, also called photobiomodulation, uses specific wavelengths of visible red and near-infrared (NIR) light.

The two wavelengths you’ll see most often are 660nm (visible red) and 850nm (near-infrared). Red light at 660nm is absorbed closer to the skin’s surface, while near-infrared at 850nm penetrates deeper into tissue. Choosing the Right Device for Your Space

The biggest factor in choosing a red light therapy device isn’t the wavelength or the brand. It’s the coverage area. A small panel like the Hooga HG200 works well for targeted use on your face, a knee, or a shoulder. But if you want full-body exposure without repositioning every few minutes, you’ll need a larger panel or a multi-unit setup.

Most other Hooga panels come with a door mount and a hanging kit with an adjustable pulley, the ULTRA 4500 comes with a wall-mount bracket, and every multi-unit setup here includes Hooga’s vertical stand. Hooga’s separate vertical and horizontal mobile stands are listed for HGPRO panels, not the HG series. Each panel ships with a U.S. power cord (three-prong on most models), and Hooga lists power consumption on the product pages, from 80 W for the HG300 to 1,200 W for the HGPRO4500, so add the figures together when you plan a multi-panel setup.

If you own a sauna, keep a standard panel outside the hot room: Hooga’s own FAQ says its red light therapy devices should not be operated in a sauna because the heat is too much for the panel’s components. For heat and red light in one cabin, look at saunas with built-in red light from Finnmark Designs, which build red LED lighting into the cabin itself.

What to Look For in a Red Light Panel

Irradiance (power density) is measured in mW/cm² and tells you how much light power reaches a surface at a stated distance, so two figures only compare fairly when they were measured at the same distance. These are the panel sizes and irradiance figures Hooga lists on each product page:

The HGPRO4500’s figure is quoted at 3 inches and the Pod’s at the LED surface, so neither compares directly with the 6-inch figures. Hooga also lists a maximum coverage area for most panels, from 31 × 28 in for the HG300 to 124 × 78 in for the ULTRA 4500.

Dual wavelength output gives you both 660nm and 850nm from the same device. Every Hooga device in this collection offers this. Some devices on the market emit only one wavelength, so check the listed wavelengths before you compare.

EMF levels are worth checking because you use a panel at close range. Hooga lists EMF emission as zero at 6 inches on the product pages of most panels in this collection, and 0 µT at 0 inches for the Pod; these are Hooga’s own figures, measured at those distances.

Session Basics and Realistic Expectations

Hooga gives 2 to 15 minutes per session, depending on how far you are from the panel, and lists daily use. Its product pages give a distance of 6 to 18 inches for most panels and 6 to 36 inches for the HGPRO300, HGPRO750 and HGPRO4500. Clothing blocks the light, so the area you are using the panel on needs to be uncovered. Hooga recommends eye protection when a panel is used on the face and includes goggles with its panels.

Red-light panels can be placed in a home gym, a bedroom or another wellness space, depending on how they mount (see mounting and power above).
