Electric sauna heater output and room size

An electric sauna heater is sized to the room's volume, not to the number of bathers: Harvia, HUUM and Sauna360 print a minimum and a maximum room volume for each of their heaters here, and the right output is one whose range covers your room. Measure the inside length, width and height in feet and multiply them for the volume in cubic feet.

Before you compare, add the allowance a maker prints for glass, masonry and uninsulated or log walls. Harvia adds about 3.9 cubic feet for each square foot (1.2 m³ per m²) of uninsulated brick, glass block, glass, concrete or tile wall, counts a glass door in it, and multiplies a solid-log sauna's volume by 1.5. HUUM's manuals for the CLIFF, STEEL and HIVE heaters, Mini versions included, add 3.3 cubic feet per square foot of uninsulated brick, tile or glass wall before you pick a heater from the room table. Saunum adds 3.0 cubic feet per square foot of glass, tile, brick, concrete or stone, multiplies the volume by 1.5 for log, plank or stave walls without internal insulation, and says to choose the larger heater when the result falls between two sizes.

By room volume, start with these outputs, then check the model's own range in the table:

• Rooms up to about 100 cubic feet: start with the 1.9 kW Harvia Vega Compact 1900 or the 2.2 kW Amerec Junior 2.2, which their makers size from about 70 cubic feet; compare more heaters for small rooms on mini sauna heaters.
• Rooms of about 100 to 210 cubic feet: start with the 3 to 4.5 kW models or HUUM's CLIFF Mini and STEEL Mini: Sauna360 sizes the 3 kW Amerec Junior 3 to 150 cubic feet, Harvia the 3.5 kW Vega Compact 3500 to 175 and the KIP's 4.5 kW model to 210, and HUUM the DROP's 4.5 kW model to 248 and the CLIFF Mini and STEEL Mini for 106–177; see 4kW sauna heaters.
• Rooms of about 210 to 300 cubic feet: start with 6 kW: Harvia sizes its 6 kW Virta, Spirit and The Wall to 294 cubic feet and the KIP's 6 kW model to 300, and HUUM sizes its 6 kW DROP, CLIFF, STEEL and HIVE Mini models to 318; see 6kW sauna heaters.
• Rooms of about 300 to 425 cubic feet: start with 7.5 or 8 kW: HUUM sizes the DROP's 7.5 kW model for 248–389 cubic feet, and Harvia sizes its 8 kW models to 425 (KIP) or 431 (Virta, Spirit, The Wall, Cilindro Half, Virta Combi); see 7.5kW sauna heaters and 8kW sauna heaters.
• Rooms of about 425 to 494 cubic feet: start with 9 kW: HUUM sizes its 9 kW DROP, CLIFF, STEEL and HIVE Mini models to 460 cubic feet, and Harvia its 9 kW Virta, Spirit, Virta Combi and Cilindro Half to 494; see 9kW sauna heaters.
• Rooms of about 494 to 636 cubic feet: start with 10 to 12 kW: Harvia sizes its 10.5 kW Virta, Virta Combi and Cilindro Half to 635–636 cubic feet and the Club's lowest output for 390–600, and HUUM sizes the HIVE's smallest model for 424–636; see 10.5kW sauna heaters and 12kW sauna heaters.
• Rooms above about 636 cubic feet: start with the largest outputs: Harvia sizes the Club's 12.5 and 15 kW models to 750 and 1,000 cubic feet and the Virta Pro 16 and 20 kW to 918 and 1,130, and HUUM sizes the HIVE's 15 and 18 kW models to 813 and 989; see 15kW+ sauna heaters.

Rule out a heater whose minimum sits above your room's volume, too: Harvia sizes its 6 to 10.5 kW Virta models from 177 cubic feet and the Virta Pro from 354.

Electric sauna heaters compared: output, room size, supply and control

Shortlist the rows whose room range covers your room's volume, keep the ones whose supply your building has, then choose between a built-in and a separate control; the judgement calls between brands and fuels are in wood vs electric sauna heaters compared.

Electric sauna heater power supply and amps

An electric sauna heater runs on the supply its maker lists for it, so check what your building has before you compare outputs:

• A 240 V circuit: choose from every heater here except the Virta Pro 20 kW; see 240V sauna heaters for that supply.
• A 208 V three-phase supply: if your building has one, the listings here for the stainless KIP with separate control (not its black version), the Club and the 10.5 kW Virta and Virta Combi include 208 V three-phase models; rule out the Virta Pro 20 kW if your building has no 208 V three-phase supply, because Harvia lists it for that supply only.
• No 240 V circuit to spare: if only a 120 V circuit is available, the Harvia Vega Compact 1900 and the Amerec Junior 2.2 also run on 120 V. Harvia's manual has the Vega Compact 1900 hardwired with seal-tight conduit and no plugs in the sauna room, and Sauna360 approves the Junior 2.2 for permanent installation, with no outlet allowed in the sauna room; compare them on 120V electric sauna heaters.
• A panel near its limit: if your panel has little spare capacity, compare the makers' amps before you choose an output: Harvia lists the KIP 6 kW at 25 amps and the KIP 8 kW at 33.3 amps on 240 V single-phase, and the Amps column gives the makers' figures for the other heaters here except the five Saunum models, whose ratings are on their product pages.

Before you buy, go over what to confirm with your electrician. Your licensed electrician sizes the breaker and wire from the manual that ships with the heater and your local code.

Electric sauna heater controls: built-in, separate and Wi-Fi

Six heaters here, all Harvia, have their thermostat and timer on the heater; every other heater here needs a separate control, which decides whether you can run the sauna from an app.

• Choose built-in controls if you want no control panel to buy and no app: the KIP or the Cilindro Half with built-in controls, The Wall or the Vega Compact, for which Harvia documents no Wi-Fi control.
• Harvia with a separate control: choose the control named for the heater, in a Wi-Fi version if you want the MyHarvia app: the Xenio CX170 for the KIP with separate control (Bathing Brands); in Harvia's manuals, the Xenio CX30 or CX45 for the Spirit and the 6 kW Virta and Cilindro Half, and the CX45 for the 8 to 10.5 kW Virta and Cilindro Half on a one-group connection (CX30 or CX45 on two groups), which Bathing Brands also pairs with a Fenix; and the Xenio Combi CX30C for the Virta Combi. The Club also runs from a Xenio.
• HUUM: choose the UKU Wi-Fi if you want the HUUM app, because the UKU Local is run from its wall panel only, with no app. HUUM rates the UKU to 11 kW on its own and to 18 kW with its UKU Extension Box, so the HIVE's 12, 15 and 18 kW models need the box.
• Saunum: if you choose a Saunum, plan on its Air IQ control: Saunum's manual says the Air and Air L operate only with it, and it adds remote control through the Saunum app over Wi-Fi.
• Amerec Junior: rule it out if you want a control Topture sells: the Junior has no control of its own and needs Sauna360's CB contactor box with an SL2 or H3 control, Topture sells neither control, and Wi-Fi comes only with Sauna360's optional Wi-Fi SaunaLogic2.
• Highest setting: if a higher maximum setting matters to you, HUUM's UKU can be set up to 230°F (110°C), or 194°F (90°C) with its bench sensor fitted, while Harvia's Xenio and Fenix controls can be set up to 194°F.

What comes with an electric sauna heater

The Harvia, HUUM and Saunum heaters here ship without sauna stones, as the makers, or Bathing Brands as Harvia's and Saunum's US distributor, state, and their listings offer the maker's stones as an add-on on the product page. The Amerec Junior comes with them: Sauna360's manual refers to the rocks supplied with the heater, and Topture's listing includes sauna stones.
