Indoor Infrared Saunas

Indoor infrared saunas are infrared-heated cabins built to stand in a dry room inside the house. The 13 in this collection come from SunRay Saunas and Finnmark Designs and are listed for one to four people; the two Finnmark Trinity models also carry a Harvia sauna heater with stones.

Are infrared saunas safe indoors?

An infrared sauna goes indoors on its maker's terms, and both makers in this collection, SunRay and Finnmark, set those terms in their manuals, among them the floor under the sauna and its power supply. SunRay's manual says its indoor infrared saunas must be placed indoors, and Finnmark's manuals say its FD saunas are intended for indoor use.

  • A fairly level or solid floor. Both makers want the sauna in a dry area: SunRay's manual on a fairly level surface, with a floor separator where the floor is damp, and Finnmark's manuals on a solid surface.
  • Finnmark: freestanding, not built in. Finnmark's manuals describe each FD sauna as a self-contained, freestanding unit that should not be built into any structure, and the places they suggest for one are a basement, an attic, a garage, a playroom, a spare bedroom or a new extension.
  • Indoors, or outdoors only on Finnmark's conditions. SunRay's FAQ says its indoor saunas are not suitable for outdoor use, which rules out all eight SunRay cabins here for a patio or yard. Finnmark's manuals allow an FD sauna outdoors only under Finnmark's outdoor cover, beneath an awning or overhang, on sturdy, dry, level ground.

Choose from this collection when the sauna will stand in a room of the house; if it will stand outside in the open, start with outdoor infrared saunas instead.

Indoor infrared sauna sizes: outside dimensions, height and doorways

An indoor infrared sauna has to fit the floor plan and the ceiling height of its room and come in through the doors on the way, so compare outside sizes before seat counts.

The 13 indoor infrared saunas in this collection, by lowest current price. Listed for is Topture's listed capacity. Heat, outside size (inches, width × depth × height) and power supply are each maker's own figures. The Roslyn's size and the 20 A figures for the Evansport, Savannah, Bristol Bay and Roslyn come from SunRay's 2023 data sheets, and the FD-5's heater voltage and stones from Bathing Brands, Finnmark's distributor. The From column shows each model's lowest current price.

  • Narrow wall or alcove: start with the Sedona, 36 inches wide, which SunRay rates for one to two people, or the FD-1, 37 inches wide, which Finnmark rates for one.
  • Room corner: the Bristol Bay is the one sauna here tagged as a corner model, and it measures 65 by 65 inches outside; corner models are grouped under corner saunas.
  • Ceiling height: Finnmark's FD-4 and FD-5 Trinity stand 83.1 inches tall, and Finnmark's manuals want at least 3 inches of clearance above every FD sauna and on all sides, which keeps the main power cord accessible. Check the ceiling before choosing either of the two.
  • Doorways and stairs: SunRay says the boxes its panels ship in fit through any door 24 inches or wider. Finnmark's manuals show its FD saunas arriving as prefabricated panels, which Bathing Brands, Finnmark's distributor, ships on a wooden pallet. For a basement or upstairs room, raise site-access questions before you order.

Indoor infrared sauna power: what each maker requires

SunRay and Finnmark each set the power supply for their indoor infrared saunas:

  • SunRay: SunRay lists its indoor infrared saunas for 110–120 V and says no other appliance should use the sauna's outlet. The circuit figure SunRay lists depends on the model, 15 A for the Sedona against 20 A for the other SunRay cabins in the table that carry one, so take the figure from your model's row; for the Sierra, ask Topture before the outlet is planned.
  • Finnmark: Finnmark's manuals require a dedicated 15 A circuit, with no other devices on it, for the FD-1, FD-2 and FD-3 and for the FD-4's infrared side. The manuals put the power supply at the top front of the sauna, on a power cord of about 9 feet, so plan the outlet's position with that cord in mind.
  • Trinity heaters: Finnmark specifies no circuit for the Harvia heater in the FD-4 or the FD-5, and its manuals end the heater installation with "Provide Harvia heater installation manual to licensed electrician". Ask Topture about the FD-5's infrared supply before the wiring is planned.

Rule out the FD-3 if the room cannot have a 240 V circuit: Finnmark's manual lists it at 240 V. Rule out the FD-5 Trinity XL unless its Harvia heater can have a 240 V single-phase or a 208 V three-phase supply, the supplies Bathing Brands, Finnmark's distributor, lists for it. Every other sauna here is a 120 V model. Your licensed electrician sizes the breaker and wire from the sauna's manual, the Harvia heater's manual for a Trinity model, and your local code.

Indoor infrared saunas by heat type and temperature

The indoor infrared saunas here heat in three ways:

  • Carbon far infrared, from SunRay: SunRay heats its eight indoor cabins here with carbon nano heaters, which its manual for these models calls far-infrared heater elements, and lists the heaters among each model's inclusions. Far infrared saunas covers that heat type.
  • Full spectrum, from Finnmark: Finnmark calls the FD-1, FD-2 and FD-3 full spectrum and heats them with infrared heaters only, pairing Spectrum Plus heaters with Spectrum Carbon panels; full spectrum infrared saunas explains the term.
  • Infrared plus a sauna heater, from Finnmark: the FD-4 Trinity and FD-5 Trinity XL add a Harvia sauna heater with stones to Finnmark's Spectrum Plus infrared heaters; indoor hybrid saunas covers that combination.

Temperature settings in the indoor infrared saunas here differ by maker. SunRay's manual gives its indoor infrared saunas an adjustable range of 64 to 140°F and allows about 8 to 15 minutes to warm up before a session. Finnmark's manuals give 170°F as the maximum temperature setting (on the Trinity models, the setting of the infrared control) and note that room temperature, air flow and placement can keep a sauna from reaching it. They allow about 15 to 20 minutes for the sauna to warm to a comfortable temperature.

Choose a SunRay cabin for carbon far-infrared heat alone, an FD-1 to FD-3 for Finnmark's full spectrum models, or a Trinity for infrared heaters and a sauna heater in one cabin; only the Finnmark models here can be set above 140°F.

Indoor infrared sauna prices and delivery

In price, SunRay's eight cabins sit in the lower part of this collection's range and Finnmark's five in the upper part, up to $8,995 for the FD-5 Trinity XL, and none of the 13 comes with a heater package to pick. Freight to the contiguous United States is included on every one of them, and the freight carrier brings the sauna to the curb on a booked delivery appointment, so plan who will carry the panels inside.

Topture sells both brands here as an authorized SunRay Saunas retailer and an authorized Finnmark Designs retailer. The rest of buying an indoor sauna from Topture is set out on the indoor saunas page.
