Group size and budget narrow the five Finnmark Designs saunas here:

  • One person. Look first at the FD-1: Finnmark rates it for one.
  • Two people. Compare the FD-2 with the FD-4 Trinity, both rated by Finnmark for two; the full-spectrum FD-2 is priced below the Trinity.
  • Three or four people. Compare the FD-3 with the FD-5 Trinity XL, both rated by Finnmark for 3 to 4; the FD-3 is priced below the Trinity XL.
  • Add-ons. A Finnmark sauna cover for each of the FD1 to FD5, a sauna cushion for each model and an ergonomic cedar backrest are sold here to go with these saunas.
  • A cold plunge as well. If you want a plunge beside the sauna, Finnmark's SoulCold is a 304 stainless steel tub for a 110–120 V supply, and its manual gives an adjustable water temperature of 34 to 108 °F. Its replacement chiller filters are offered as an add-on on its product page, and the manual puts the paper core filter on a 30-day replacement cycle. Compare it in cold plunges.

The two Finnmark sauna lines here: heat, light and wood

Finnmark Designs builds both lines around its Spectrum Plus™ heaters, which Finnmark says produce mid and far infrared, a dual output of 6–14 microns, and which its manuals list as "Low EMF/ELF".

  • Full-spectrum line. The three Finnmark full-spectrum infrared saunas add Spectrum Carbon panels, which Finnmark describes as long-wave far-infrared heaters, on the side walls, and they heat with infrared only: none of the three has a heater with stones.
  • Trinity line. The two Trinity hybrid saunas use Spectrum Plus™ heaters only, without carbon panels, beside their Harvia heater; Finnmark describes the steam as water splashed onto that heater's rocks, and its manuals call for no drain, water line or plumbing connection.
  • Red light. Finnmark fits the Trinity models with its Spectrum Red Light™ LED panel, specified at 650 nm, with color settings; the full-spectrum manuals describe a multi-color LED ceiling light with a red setting, and Finnmark publishes no wavelength for it.
  • Wood and temperature. Finnmark builds the FD saunas with a clear A-grade Canadian Western Red Cedar interior and a Thermal Plus™ aspen exterior. Its manuals give 170°F as the maximum temperature setting (on the Trinity models, for the infrared control), allow about 15–20 minutes to warm to a comfortable temperature, and note that the setting may not be reached, depending on room temperature, air flow and placement.

Choose a full-spectrum Finnmark if infrared heat alone suits you; choose a Trinity if you also want to pour water on hot stones, or want Finnmark's Spectrum Red Light™ LED panel.

Placing and assembling a Finnmark sauna

Finnmark's manuals describe each FD sauna as a self-contained, freestanding unit that should not be built into any structure, and suggest a basement, attic, garage, playroom, spare bedroom or new extension. They ask for a solid surface in a dry area and at least 3 inches of clearance above the sauna and on all sides, so the main power cord stays accessible; the power supply sits at the top front, with a cord of about 9 feet.

Finnmark's manuals give the one- and two-person full-spectrum models an exterior height of 78.3 inches and both Trinity models 83.1 inches, so measure the ceiling against the model's height plus that clearance.

Finnmark's manuals say the FD saunas are intended for indoor use. Placed outdoors, an FD sauna must have Finnmark's outdoor cover and stand under an awning or overhang on sturdy, dry, level ground, not grass, gravel or dirt, and placing it outside without a cover voids the warranty.

Bathing Brands, Finnmark's distributor, ships the FD saunas on a wooden pallet, and Finnmark's manuals show each one arriving as prefabricated panels (the front panel with the glass door, back, two sides, roof and floor), with the bench parts, adjustable feet, power supply and a parts box, all screwed together on site. The manuals call for a minimum of two physically able people, state "Professional installation required", and list a screwdriver and a level as the assembly tools for the full-spectrum models; Finnmark publishes no assembly time.

Choose an indoor room for a Finnmark with height and clearance to spare; if the sauna has to go outside, plan the cover, overhang and ground Finnmark's manuals ask for before you order.

Finnmark sauna power by model

Finnmark's manuals say all wiring should be performed by a licensed electrician following all local codes and ordinances, and Finnmark lists these supplies per model:

  • FD-1 and FD-2. A dedicated 15 A, 120 V circuit with a NEMA 5-15 receptacle, kept for the sauna alone.
  • FD-3. A dedicated 15 A, 240 V circuit with a NEMA 6-15 receptacle, likewise kept for the sauna alone.
  • FD-4 Trinity. A dedicated 15 A, 120 V circuit with a NEMA 5-15 receptacle for the infrared side; Finnmark lists the 1.9 kW Harvia Vega Compact heater at 120 V and 15.9 A and specifies no circuit for it.
  • FD-5 Trinity XL. Finnmark lists the 4.5 kW Harvia KIP45B heater at 240 V and 18.8 A and marks it "Electrician Required", and Bathing Brands adds that 208 V three-phase operation is available; Topture's team can go over the FD-5's infrared circuit with you.

If your space can take only 120 V circuits, start with the FD-1, FD-2 or FD-4. Topture's guide to sauna electrical requirements explains what a dedicated circuit involves. For the full-spectrum FD-1 to FD-3, which heat with infrared only, the circuits above come from Finnmark's own manuals. Your licensed electrician sizes the breaker and wire from the sauna's manual and your local code.

On both Trinity models, Finnmark's manuals end the heater installation with "Provide Harvia heater installation manual to licensed electrician". Your licensed electrician sizes the breaker and wire from the manual that ships with the heater and your local code.
