Mini sauna heaters compared by room volume

A mini sauna heater is sized to the room's volume: multiply the room's inside length, width and height in feet, then choose a heater whose maker prints a minimum and a maximum room size that take in the result. The ranges of the small models in this collection begin between 70 and 106 cubic feet and end between 100 and 210 cubic feet.

For the Harvia and HUUM heaters here, their makers add an allowance for glass and for brick or tile walls without insulation before you read their ranges. For a Harvia heater, Harvia adds about 3.9 cu ft for each square foot of glass, brick, concrete or tile wall without insulation, counts a glass door the same way and multiplies the volume of a solid-log sauna by 1.5. If you choose one of the HUUM Mini heaters here, HUUM's manuals add 3.3 cu ft for each square foot of uninsulated brick, tile or glass wall. Sauna360, Amerec's parent company, also sets a minimum floor for the Junior heaters, 8 sq ft for the Junior 2.2 and 12 sq ft for the Junior 3.0, with walls 73½ to 84 inches high.

Read each maker's range against your room's volume, after any allowance for glass or uninsulated walls:

• For a room of about 70 to 100 cubic feet: start with the Amerec Junior 2.2 or the Harvia Vega Compact 1900, whose makers' ranges end at 100 and 106 cubic feet; the Vega Compact 3500 covers a room this size too.
• For a room of about 100 to 177 cubic feet: several heaters here fit, so choose by supply and control: the Vega Compact 3500 runs to 175 cubic feet, the KIP 4.5 kW model to 210, HUUM's CLIFF Mini and STEEL Mini from 106 to 177 on a 240 V supply, and the Amerec Junior 3.0 to 150.
• For a room of about 177 to 210 cubic feet: choose the KIP's 4.5 kW or 6 kW model on any of the four KIP listings: Harvia sizes the 6 kW model from 170 cubic feet, so a room in this band fits either, and the HUUM Mini heaters here stop at 177.
• For a room larger than 210 cubic feet: rule out a mini heater. Harvia sizes the same KIP listings' 6 kW model up to 300 cubic feet and their 8 kW model for 250–425; other outputs are in electric sauna heaters.
• For wood heat instead: go to small sauna wood stoves.

Electrical supply for a mini sauna heater

Every mini sauna heater here can run on a 240 V supply, and two can also run on 120 V: Sauna360 lists the Amerec Junior 2.2 for a 120 V or a 240 V single-phase supply, and Harvia lists the Vega Compact 1900 for 120/240 V single-phase. At 120 V, Harvia lists the Vega Compact 1900 at 15.9 amps and Sauna360 lists the Junior 2.2 at 18.3 amps.

Choose by the supply your electrician can bring to the room:

• Only 120 V within reach: choose the Vega Compact 1900, or the Amerec Junior 2.2 with the separate Sauna360 control it needs, and plan for a permanent connection rather than a plug: Harvia's manual has the Vega Compact 1900 hardwired, with no plugs in the sauna room, and Sauna360's has the Junior 2.2 wired through its contactor box, with no outlet or receptacle in the sauna room.
• A 240 V circuit: choose by the makers' amps, which for the small models here run from 8 amps for the Vega Compact 1900 to 18.8 amps for the KIP 4.5 kW model; Harvia lists the KIP's 6 kW model at 25 amps.
• A 208 V supply: choose one of the HUUM Mini heaters here, which HUUM also rates for 208 V, or the KIP with separate control or its Wi-Fi package, which sell Harvia's KIP-W3 models for 208 V three-phase, at 12.5 amps for the 4.5 kW model. HUUM's US manual gives the Minis' 208 V ratings separately: their 106–177 cubic-foot range is the 240 V figure.

Take the room's supply and the maker's amps for the heater you choose to your electrician before you order a mini sauna heater. Your licensed electrician sizes the breaker and wire from the manual that ships with the heater and your local code.

Controls and mounting for mini sauna heaters

A mini sauna heater here either carries its controls on the heater or runs from a separate control, and it either hangs on the wall or stands on legs. Choose by how you want to run it and where it will go:

• No wall panel and no app: choose a Vega Compact or a KIP with built-in controls. Harvia puts the thermostat and timer on these heaters and documents no Wi-Fi control for them.
• A separate control, or control from your phone: choose the KIP with separate control, which runs from a Harvia Xenio CX170 whose Wi-Fi versions connect to the MyHarvia app, or one of the HUUM Mini heaters here, which run from a HUUM UKU: the UKU Local from its wall panel only, with no app, and the UKU Wi-Fi from the HUUM app. More heaters that run with a Wi-Fi control are in sauna heaters with Wi-Fi control.
• Rule out the Amerec Junior if you want everything it needs from one order here: Sauna360's manual wires the Junior through a separate contactor box to its SaunaLogic2 or H3 control, and Topture sells neither control.
• Heater off the floor: choose a Vega Compact, a KIP or an Amerec Junior, which hang on the sauna wall in their makers' manuals; HUUM's CLIFF Mini and STEEL Mini stand on legs and are fixed to the wall with a bracket.

Mini sauna heater packages and stones

A mini sauna heater comes either alone or in a package, and what you already own decides which suits you:

• Heater, control and stones in one item: choose a package: the CLIFF Mini and STEEL Mini packages here add a HUUM UKU control (the UKU Local Black, or the UKU Wi-Fi with a Black, Glass or Mirror panel) and HUUM stones; the KIP package with Wi-Fi adds a Xenio CX170 Wi-Fi control and Harvia stones, and the KIP package with built-in controls adds the stones. • The heater alone: choose it if you already have a compatible control, or for a model with its controls on the heater. The Harvia and HUUM heaters sold alone ship without stones, and their product pages offer stones as an add-on; sauna stones ship free within the contiguous United States when ordered with a heater. Both Amerec Junior heaters come with stones.
