Infrared saunas by placement, heat type and size

Four choices narrow an infrared sauna to a short list: where it will stand, which kind of infrared heat you want, whether you also want hot stones, and how many people it needs to seat.

  • Indoors or outdoors. Choose one of the indoor infrared saunas for a dry room in the house: SunRay says its indoor cabins must stay indoors, and Finnmark builds its FD saunas for indoor use, allowing them outdoors only under Finnmark's outdoor cover and beneath an awning or overhang. Choose one of the outdoor infrared saunas if it will stand in the yard: all five here are SunRay cabins, weather-sealed under a metal roof.
  • Far infrared or full spectrum. Browse the far infrared saunas for cabins heated by far infrared alone, or the full spectrum infrared saunas for the cabins Finnmark calls full spectrum, whose Spectrum Plus heaters add mid infrared. Choose on the kind of heat you want; how far-infrared and full-spectrum heat differ sets out what each gives you.
  • Infrared alone or with hot stones. If pouring water on hot stones matters to you, start with the hybrid saunas. For the wider choice between the two kinds of heat, infrared and traditional saunas compared weighs them up.
  • How many people. Size an infrared sauna for the people who will sit in it together most often. Seven saunas here are listed for two people, three for three people and seven for four. Topture lists the Finnmark FD-1 for one person, and Finnmark rates it for one; SunRay rates its Sedona, listed here for two, for one to two people.

Infrared saunas are also grouped as low-EMF infrared saunas, red light therapy saunas, luxury infrared saunas and commercial infrared saunas.

For a cedar interior, choose one of the red cedar SunRay cabins or a Finnmark FD sauna, which Finnmark builds with a red cedar interior.

If two infrared saunas still look close side by side, how to choose an infrared sauna weighs the trade-offs between them.

Infrared sauna prices and what they include

Infrared saunas in this collection run from $2,698 to $8,995. SunRay's cabins fill most of the lower end of the range and Finnmark's most of the upper end.

The price of an infrared sauna here includes its heaters: SunRay lists the carbon heaters among each cabin's inclusions, Finnmark builds its infrared heaters into every FD sauna, and the two Trinity models come with their Harvia heater and Harvia sauna stones from Bathing Brands, Finnmark's distributor. Every sauna in this collection includes freight within the contiguous United States.

Compare infrared saunas on the price plus the electrical work your room needs, not on the price alone. Running cost depends on the heaters' wattage, the hours of use and your electricity rate; what an infrared sauna costs to buy and run sets out the sums.

Infrared sauna power: a dedicated 120 V outlet or a 240 V circuit

The power supply an infrared sauna needs is set by its maker:

  • Dedicated 110–120 V outlet: SunRay's eight indoor cabins here and its outdoor Burlington and Grandby. SunRay says not to plug any other appliance into the sauna's outlet.
  • Dedicated 120 V circuit: Finnmark's FD-1 and FD-2, and the infrared side of the FD-4 Trinity.
  • Dedicated 220–240 V circuit: SunRay's outdoor Logan and Pacific, and Finnmark's FD-3 at 240 V. Cross these off the list if the site has no 240 V circuit and one cannot be added.
  • Trinity sauna heaters: Finnmark lists the FD-4's Harvia Vega Compact at 120 V and 15.9 A and the FD-5 Trinity XL's Harvia KIP45B at 240 V and 18.8 A, and Bathing Brands adds 208 V three-phase as an option for the FD-5's heater. Finnmark specifies no circuit for either heater. Your licensed electrician sizes the breaker and wire from the sauna's manual, the Harvia heater's manual for a Trinity model, and your local code.
  • Ask Topture first: the supply for SunRay's outdoor Cayenne and for the FD-5 Trinity XL's infrared heaters, before you plan the wiring.

Finnmark's manuals say all wiring should be done by a licensed electrician. For any infrared sauna here, plan for professional electrical work where a new outlet or circuit is required; what to confirm with your electrician before you buy lists the questions to ask.

Infrared sauna kits: assembly and placement

Every infrared sauna in this collection is filed as a kit and arrives as prefabricated panels for assembly on site. SunRay's panels are pre-built, pre-assembled at the factory and broken down for shipping, and two people lock them together with a screwdriver, which SunRay puts at under an hour for most of its indoor infrared cabins here and about two hours for most of its outdoor infrared cabins here. Finnmark's FD saunas come as panels, bench parts and a power supply that are screwed together on site, and Finnmark's manuals call for at least two people and state "Professional installation required". For do-it-yourself assembly, the SunRay cabins are the ones SunRay describes as needing no special tools and no contractor.

An outdoor infrared sauna needs its base ready before delivery: a level, solid surface such as the concrete pad or wood deck that SunRay names in its outdoor manuals, and SunRay says the Logan and Pacific must never stand directly on the ground.

Buying infrared saunas from Topture

Topture is a specialist multi-brand online sauna retailer, an authorized SunRay Saunas retailer and an authorized Finnmark Designs retailer: the two brands in this infrared sauna collection.

Topture sends every infrared sauna here by freight to a booked delivery appointment at the curb, with a liftgate on most shipments, and an adult signs the Bill of Lading. Damage noted on that Bill of Lading at delivery is covered by Topture's full-value freight protection, which replaces the broken parts. SunRay says the boxes its panels ship in fit through any door 24 inches or wider. Raise site-access questions before you order.

Every infrared sauna here includes the applicable manufacturer's warranty from SunRay Saunas or Finnmark Designs, subject to the manufacturer's terms, and Topture assists with troubleshooting and warranty coordination. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the downside to an infrared sauna?

An infrared-only sauna has no stone heater, so there is no steam from water poured on hot stones; a hybrid adds a stone heater for that. An infrared sauna's top temperature is set by its maker. SunRay says its outdoor infrared cabins and most of its indoor cabins here reach up to 140°F. Finnmark's manuals put the top setting for its FD saunas at 170°F (on the Trinity models, the infrared control's setting) and add that room temperature, air flow and placement can keep a sauna from reaching it.
