Home sauna options: placement, size, heat, heater and assembly

Five choices narrow a home sauna to a short list: where it will stand, how many people it needs to seat, how it heats, whether the heater comes with it, and whether you want to assemble it.

• Indoors or outdoors. Choose an indoor sauna if you have a spare room, basement or large bathroom and want the sauna a few steps away. Choose an outdoor sauna if you have yard space and want a retreat outside the house; it needs a level, solid base and a freight delivery to the curb.
• How many people. Size a home sauna for the people who will use it most often rather than for occasional guests, since every extra seat adds footprint and, on a traditional sauna, heater size.
• Stones or infrared. Choose a traditional sauna if you want to pour water on hot stones for steam. Choose an infrared sauna if you want a cabin heated by infrared panels, including models that run on a dedicated 120 V outlet instead of a 240 V circuit. A hybrid sauna has both.
• Heater included or chosen. If you would rather not choose a heater, start with SunRay, ThermaSol, Kohler and Finnmark, whose saunas include their heat source. SaunaLife, Dundalk LeisureCraft and True North saunas are sold with a choice of heater packages, one marked Recommended, which suits you if you want a particular heater or wood-burning heat.
• Kit or assembled. Most home saunas arrive as kits to assemble on site. ThermaSol's outdoor cabins and the SaunaLife G6 arrive fully assembled instead, and a forklift or crane has to place them.

How much does a home sauna cost?

A home sauna at Topture costs from $2,698 for the Sunray Evansport 2-Person Indoor Infrared Sauna 200K2 to $75,028 for the ThermaSol Ombra 4-5 Person Outdoor Sauna Cabin. Do home saunas use a lot of electricity?

A home sauna's electricity use depends on its heater. An electric sauna heater uses its rated output while its elements are on, so an hour at a full 6 kW is 6 kWh, and once the room is hot it no longer runs continuously: SunRay's traditional outdoor manual says the heater then turns off and on periodically to hold the thermostat setting. On most Dundalk LeisureCraft, True North and SaunaLife saunas the Recommended heater package is a HUUM DROP of 4.5 to 9 kW.

Infrared saunas and hybrids differ in supply: SunRay lists its Burlington for a dedicated 120 V outlet but its Pacific for a 220–240 V circuit, so check the model's power requirement before you plan the wiring. A wood-burning stove, offered as a package on every True North sauna, most Dundalk LeisureCraft outdoor saunas and some SaunaLife models, heats without any electrical connection.

For a traditional sauna's electric heater on grid power, SunRay lists the Seneca for a dedicated 220–240 V circuit, and HUUM's UKU manual, for the control sold in the HUUM DROP packages, recommends new wiring and says to install it on a dedicated circuit. Home sauna delivery, placement and base requirements

Home saunas ship by freight to a curbside delivery booked by appointment, and moving the sauna from the curb to its spot is the buyer's job. Raise site-access questions before you order.
