Sauna kits by room, build, seats and installation

Four questions sort the sauna kits in this collection:

• Indoors. Choose an indoor kit for a room inside the house; SunRay, SaunaLife, Dundalk LeisureCraft, Kohler, Finnmark and ThermaSol all make indoor kits, with more in indoor saunas.
• Outdoors. For the yard, the builds are barrel saunas from SunRay, SaunaLife, Dundalk LeisureCraft and True North, outdoor cube saunas such as SaunaLife's CL series in full-length Thermo-Spruce wall staves, sauna cabins from five of the seven kit brands, and sauna pods from Dundalk LeisureCraft, SaunaLife and True North.
• Seats. In this collection a sauna kit for six or more people has to be an outdoor one, since its indoor kits are built for one to five.
• Your own build or not. If you would rather not assemble a sauna kit yourself, choose a Kohler kit with professional installation, or look at the cabins delivered assembled among Topture's home saunas.

Sauna kits compared

Can you assemble an outdoor sauna kit yourself, or do you need an installer?

Most sauna kits here are made to be assembled by their buyers from the maker's instructions: True North ships its saunas "in kit form for you to assemble", SunRay's FAQ says two people are required and the only tool needed is a Phillips screwdriver or a drill with a Phillips bit, several SunRay product pages add "no contractor", and SaunaLife says the X2's pre-assembled wall and ceiling panels make assembly simple. The Kohler C1 and C2 product pages also offer professional installation, which does not include the electrical work.

The SaunaLife CL3G and the Dundalk LeisureCraft Harmony ask for more tools: SaunaLife's CL3G installation manual lists ten, from a measuring tape, circular saw and water level to a drill and rubber mallet, plus extra hands, and Dundalk LeisureCraft's Harmony checklist runs to 13, among them a cordless driver, a nail gun, a staple gun, two sockets, a #3 Robertson bit, a 2-inch hole saw, a level and a mallet. Dundalk LeisureCraft's instructions for several kits, the MiniPOD's among them, recommend two people. For a lighter build, start with a SunRay kit or the SaunaLife X2; the CL3G and the Harmony suit a builder comfortable with a circular saw or a nail gun.

How much do sauna kits cost?

Sauna kits in this collection start at $3,496 for the Sunray Baldwin 2-Person Indoor Traditional Sauna 200SN. The dearest, the Kohler C2 Outdoor Sauna Kit - Weathered Grey Spruce | 3, 5 or 6 Person, starts at $34,763 in its 3-person size, and its 5- and 6-person sizes cost more.

What a sauna kit's total includes depends on the kit. On a SaunaLife E7, for example, the total is the kit price, the heater package chosen with it and SaunaLife's $950 freight, while the Sunray Baldwin's price already covers its Harvia heater and its freight. Compare sauna kits on those totals, not on the kit price alone.

Sauna kit delivery and base

Sauna kits ship by freight to a curbside delivery booked by appointment, and unless white-glove service has been arranged, moving the parts from the curb to the site is the buyer's job. SunRay's FAQ says its saunas arrive as wooden panels boxed in cardboard on a pallet, in boxes that fit through a door 24 inches or wider; for the larger outdoor kits, raise site-access questions before you order.

An outdoor sauna kit needs a level, solid base before assembly starts. Dundalk LeisureCraft's Harmony instructions call for a base of crushed stone, patio stones or pavers, a concrete pad or a wood deck, level with a slight slope to the back for drainage, and suggest building it larger than the sauna to leave room to sit outside it.
