If you want one sentence on Harvia: it's the reliable workhorse of sauna heaters. Harvia has been building heaters in Finland since 1950, and the reason we keep recommending them is boring in the best way — they tend to just run. Fewer reported failures, a proven track record, and a lineup that covers everything from a 1.9kW closet sauna to a 16kW commercial floor unit. When a customer tells me they don't want to think about their heater again after install, Harvia is usually where I point them.

Every Harvia electric heater tops out at 194°F, runs on a Harvia controller (built-in on B-model heaters, external Xenio on the rest), and needs a basket of olivine diabase stones to do its job. The differences are in body style, stone mass, room range, and whether the unit is built for a home or a busy commercial room.

Vega Compact — the smallest rooms. 1.9kW on a standard 120V plug or 3.5kW on 240V, only 29 lbs of stones. This is the heater for a 1-person closet conversion or a tiny indoor build where running a big dedicated circuit isn't worth it.

KIP — the entry wall-mount. 4.5kW (100–210 cu ft), 6kW (170–300), and 8kW (250–425), 50 lbs of stones, available with built-in or external controls. This is the most affordable Harvia and the right call for most small-to-medium home saunas where you want simple and reliable over fancy.

The Wall — the design-forward wall-mount. 6/8kW with built-in controls and a slim 44 lbs stone load. Same wall-mount convenience as KIP, but built to look like a deliberate design object rather than a utility box. Pick it when the heater is visible and you care how it reads.

Spirit — a step up in wall-mount stone mass. 6/8/9kW with 110 lbs of stones, so it carries more thermal punch than KIP or The Wall while still hanging on the wall to save floor space.

Cilindro Half — the column. 6/8/9/10.5kW with a massive 200–264 lbs of stones in a tall cylindrical cage, floor or wall mounted. This is the Harvia line for buyers who want the soft, humid steam that only comes from a lot of stone mass, in a striking vertical body.

Virta — the premium residential floor heater. 6/8/9/10.5kW with 150 lbs of stones, the Virta Combi adds a built-in steamer, and the Virta Pro goes to 16kW. This is the classic Finnish floor-stander when you want the best home experience Harvia builds.

Club — the commercial unit. 10.5/12.5/15kW stainless floor heater with 132 lbs of stones, rated for 388–989 cu ft and built for high-use rooms. This is gyms, spas, condo amenity rooms, and oversized residential builds, not a typical home sauna.
If you read that list and you're still between two lines, the deciding factors are almost always stone mass and where the heater sits. More stone mass means softer, longer-lasting löyly and steadier heat through repeated water pours. Floor units generally carry more stone than wall units. Wall units save floor space. Everything else is body style and budget.
How to Choose a Harvia Electric Heater
Start with room volume
Sizing is mostly matching kW to the cubic footage of your sauna. KIP 4.5kW covers 100–210 cu ft; KIP 8kW covers 250–425. The floor units climb from there — Virta and Cilindro reach into the 600 cu ft range at 10.5kW, and the Club handles up to 989 cu ft at 15kW. When you're on the line between two wattages, size up. Glass doors, tile, exterior walls, and cold climates all pull effective capacity down, and an undersized heater is one that never quite gets the room where you want it. If it's easier to shop by wattage, jump straight to the 8kW sauna heater, 9kW heater, 10.5kW heater, or 12kW heater collections and filter to Harvia.
Plan the electrical before you order
Every Harvia electric heater above the Vega 1.9kW needs a dedicated 240V circuit (some commercial models also offer 208V and three-phase). As a rough guide at 240V single-phase: a 4.5kW pulls about 18.75 amps on a 30A breaker, an 8kW pulls 33.3 amps on a 40A breaker, a 9kW pulls 37.5 amps on a 40A breaker, and a 10.5kW pulls 43.75 amps on a 50A breaker. None of these run off a shared circuit. Always consult a licensed electrician before any electrical work — requirements vary by local code and jurisdiction, and the figures here are general reference only. Built-in controls vs. external Xenio
Harvia gives you two control styles. Built-in heaters (the "B" models, like KIP45B) have the timer and thermostat dial right on the heater body — simplest possible setup, no separate wall panel, no app. External heaters (the "W" models) pair with a separate Xenio controller mounted outside the hot room, and the digital Xenio versions add WiFi so you can preheat from your phone and schedule sessions. If you want to walk into a hot sauna without babysitting it, go external with a WiFi Xenio. If you want the cheapest, most foolproof install, go built-in. What to Order Alongside the Heater
A Harvia heater is not a complete order on its own. You'll need stones, the right controller for your model, and — if you went external — the Xenio panel. For stones, Harvia specs olivine diabase, and you fill the basket to the model's rated weight: 50 lbs for a KIP, 150 lbs for a Virta, up to 264 lbs for the big Cilindro. Electric or Wood-Burning?
Most home buyers pick electric — it's faster to heat, doesn't need a chimney, and runs on a wall switch or app. But Harvia builds a serious wood-burning lineup too, and it's the right call for off-grid cabins, backyard builds where running a 240V circuit isn't realistic, and anyone who wants the ritual of building a fire. The wood stoves also carry far more stone mass than an electric of equivalent power, which is why steam purists lean that way. Harvia vs. HUUM, Briefly
We carry both, and people ask us to compare them constantly. The short version: HUUM is the design-and-steam play — bigger stone capacity (up to 595 lbs on the HIVE), a 230°F max temp that's the highest in the home category, and steam that customers describe as a warm misty hug. Harvia is the reliability play — proven, lower-fuss, fewer reported issues, and usually a bit easier on the budget at a given wattage. If you want maximum löyly and a statement piece, look at the HUUM electric heaters. If you want a heater you install and forget, stay in the Harvia range. Neither is wrong; they're built for different buyers.
