Description

The SaunaLife Titan SL1 is a portable propane sauna heater. It burns propane (LP) from a standard cylinder placed outside the sauna, produces up to 8.1 kW (27,600 BTU/h) on High and Low settings, and heats sauna rooms of 140–350 cu ft uninsulated or 140–425 cu ft insulated. It needs no electrical connection and no chimney: combustion air comes in through a lower vent and leaves through an upper vent to the outdoors. The Titan weighs 33 lb without stones, holds 44 lb of 1"–2" sauna stones, and is built from 310S and 304 stainless steel.

Where can you use the SaunaLife Titan SL1?

SaunaLife's manual approves the Titan SL1 for two settings: a properly constructed sauna room or cabin that meets its clearance and ventilation requirements, and SaunaLife's own SaunaTrekker and SaunaTrekker XL sauna tents. With no wiring or flue to disconnect, the same heater can move between the two; SaunaLife sells it as a portable heater for exactly that. It must not be installed in living areas or any indoor space not built for sauna use, and SaunaLife does not allow third-party, modified or substitute tents.

What does the Titan SL1 need instead of wiring or a chimney?

The Titan SL1 replaces an electrical circuit and a chimney with three requirements of its own: permanent lower and upper ventilation openings, with the exhaust discharging directly outdoors; a propane cylinder outside the sauna, connected with the regulator and 6 ft hose supplied; and a stable, level, non-combustible surface to stand on. Those are the trade-offs to plan for against an electric heater, which needs a dedicated circuit, or a wood stove, which needs a chimney and firewood.

How long does a propane tank last in the Titan SL1?

SaunaLife rates a standard 20 lb propane cylinder at about 15 to 25 hours of sauna in the Titan SL1, depending on room size and the heat setting used. The cylinder is not included. The Titan runs on propane (LP) only, and its low-pressure regulator connects directly to the cylinder valve; SaunaLife's manual says to use the regulator and hose as supplied and not to substitute or modify either one.

Safety & Features

What safety features does the SaunaLife Titan SL1 have?

  • Oxygen depletion sensor (ODS): shuts off the gas if the oxygen level in the room drops below a preset threshold. SaunaLife describes it as a supplemental device that does not replace the required ventilation.
  • Internal tip switch: cuts the gas if the heater is tilted or knocked off level.
  • 60-minute timer: sets the run time for each session, up to 60 minutes.
  • Heater guard: a curved alder guard that clips onto the stone basket to help prevent contact with it. One is included, and up to three can be fitted.
  • Heat-resistant gloves: included, for handling the heater, the stones and metal parts, which stay hot long after shutdown.

SaunaLife says every Titan SL1 has its safety features tested before it leaves the factory.

Rules for using the Titan SL1 safely

  • Never leave the Titan SL1 running unattended, and never sleep in the sauna while it is operating.
  • Keep both ventilation openings fully open and unobstructed whenever the heater is on.
  • Keep the propane cylinder outside the sauna room or tent, upright and secured.
  • If anyone develops a headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, sleepiness or confusion, shut the heater off, move to fresh air and seek medical attention if symptoms persist. These can be signs of carbon monoxide exposure.
  • If you smell gas, shut off the gas supply, put out any open flame and ventilate the area; do not use the heater again until the leak has been found and fixed.
  • Pour water onto the stones slowly to avoid a sudden burst of steam.

Titan SL1 controls

The Titan SL1 has a 60-minute timer, a push-button igniter and a gas control knob with four positions: Off, Position 1 to light the pilot, Position 2 for High heat and Position 3 for Low heat. All the controls sit on a box at the base of the heater, which the manual says must stay easy to reach and not be blocked by benches, walls or fixtures.

Stones and steam

The Titan SL1's stainless-steel stone basket holds 44 lb of 1"–2" (3–5 cm) stones around its radiant heat chamber. Once the heater reaches operating temperature, ladle small amounts of clean water onto the stones for steam. For continuous humidity, the optional Titan SL1 Water Tank holds 1.3 gallons of water under the stone basket and releases steam as it heats, with a spigot for drawing hot water.

Construction

The Titan SL1 is built from 310S and 304 stainless steel, per SaunaLife's manual, with brass components, per SaunaLife. SaunaLife says it developed the heater with Finnish sauna engineers.

Who should install the SaunaLife Titan SL1?

SaunaLife's manual says the Titan SL1 must be installed by a person familiar with fuel-burning appliances and general gas safety practices. For installation in a sauna cabin, local building codes or regulations may require a licensed or qualified professional, so check what applies where you live before you install.

What ventilation does the Titan SL1 require?

The Titan SL1 needs two permanent openings that stay fully open whenever it runs. SaunaLife specifies natural ventilation and does not recommend mechanical ventilation systems, which can interfere with the heater's combustion air.

  • Lower opening (air intake): at least 54 sq in of free area, for example a 9" round vent or a 6" × 9" rectangular vent.
  • Upper opening (exhaust): at least 39 sq in of free area, for example an 8" round vent or a 5" × 8" rectangular vent, on the wall opposite the heater and near the ceiling.
  • The exhaust must discharge directly to the outdoors, never into another room or enclosed part of a building.
  • If the vents have screens, louvers or grilles, make them larger so the free area still meets these minimums.
  • Check that a prefabricated sauna cabin meets these minimums before installing the Titan in it.

What clearances does the Titan SL1 need?

All Titan SL1 clearances are measured from the outside of the stone basket to walls, benches, doors and any other combustible material. In a sauna cabin, the optional heat shield reduces the side and rear distances.

With the heat shield fitted, keep at least 1" between the shield and any wall or combustible surface; the shield must not touch or be attached to combustible material. In a SaunaTrekker tent the 6" side, 6" rear and 16" front distances apply with or without the shield.

Floor and propane line requirements

  • Stand the Titan SL1 only on a stable, level, non-combustible surface. It must not sit directly on a wood floor or wooden floor grate; if the sauna floor is combustible, install non-combustible floor protection first.
  • Keep the propane cylinder outside the sauna, upright, secured and in a well-ventilated place.
  • Route the hose at least 12" from the heater and away from hot surfaces, where it cannot be kinked, crushed, worn through or walked on.
  • In a sauna cabin, provide an accessible manual gas shutoff valve outside the sauna room.
  • Leak-test every connection with a solution of 1 part liquid dish soap to 3 parts water after installation, after reconnecting a cylinder and after any service. Bubbles mean a leak: shut off the gas, tighten the connection and test again.

How is the Titan SL1 assembled?

  1. Place the heater base with burner in its final position on a stable, level, non-combustible base.
  2. Set the heat chamber onto the burner, making sure it is fully seated.
  3. Slide the stone basket over the heat column and turn it clockwise to lock it to the base.
  4. Clip the heater guard onto the stone basket; its height can be adjusted.
  5. Load the stones: stack them somewhat tightly with small gaps for airflow, without forcing or compacting them, and avoid large gaps, which increase direct radiant heat.
  6. Connect the regulator to the propane cylinder and leak-test the connections before first use.

Using the Titan SL1 in a SaunaTrekker tent

In a tent, the Titan SL1 may be used only in SaunaLife's SaunaTrekker or SaunaTrekker XL, whose ventilation openings are factory-sized for it. Place the heater in the corner of the tent that has the lower ventilation intake, on a non-combustible surface such as a stone paver and never directly on grass. Keep the propane cylinder outside the tent, bring the hose in without pinching it, and do not cover or modify the tent's vents.

Operation & Care

How do you light the SaunaLife Titan SL1?

Before each use, check that the heater is assembled and stable, both vents are fully open, the clearances are clear and the gas connections are secure. Then:

  1. Turn on the gas supply.
  2. Set the timer to the run time you want, up to 60 minutes.
  3. Turn the control knob to Position 1.
  4. Press and hold the control knob, then press the igniter until the pilot lights. Keep holding the knob until the pilot stays lit; if it goes out, repeat.
  5. Turn the knob to Position 2 for High heat or Position 3 for Low heat.

To shut down, turn the control knob to Off, turn off the gas supply and let the heater cool for at least 30 minutes before handling it, wearing the included gloves.

How long does the Titan SL1 take to heat a sauna?

SaunaLife's manual allows about 15 to 20 minutes for the sauna to reach temperature, and SaunaLife says the Titan SL1 heats most saunas in under 30 minutes. Actual time depends on room size, insulation and the heat setting.

Maintaining the Titan SL1

  • With the heater off and cool, keep it clean and its airflow openings clear.
  • Check the burner area, gas hose, connections and stones regularly, and do not run the heater if any part is damaged.
  • Clean the burner with a soft brush or cloth and mild soapy water; clear its openings with a thin wire, never a sharp object.
  • Blow dust out of the oxygen depletion sensor with compressed air; do not insert anything into it.
  • Replace the gas hose every 2 years, or sooner if it shows damage, using only SaunaLife-approved parts.

Troubleshooting the Titan SL1

  • Pilot will not light or stay lit: check the gas supply, hold the control knob longer (60 to 90 seconds) and clean the oxygen depletion sensor.
  • Heater shuts off while running: make sure both vents are fully open and the heater is level, since the tip switch cuts the gas when it tilts, and check the gas supply.
  • Low heat or uneven heat: use the High setting, re-stack the stones more tightly and confirm the room is within the Titan's 140–425 cu ft range.
  • Gas smell: shut off the gas, tighten the connections, leak-test and do not use the heater until it is resolved.

If your order is in stock, most orders ship within 2–7 business days of purchase. Transit time then depends on the distance from the warehouse and, for freight, on booking a delivery appointment.

For custom, pre-order or made-to-order items, the estimated delivery time frame is listed on the product page. Delivery dates are estimates, so please don't book installation labor until your order has arrived and been inspected.

What happens after I place my order?

As soon as you place your order, you'll receive a confirmation email with your order details—be sure to keep it for your records. Once your order ships, you'll receive another email with tracking information.

For freight deliveries, the carrier will call or text you to schedule an appointment once the shipment reaches their local terminal. Someone needs to be there to inspect the shipment and sign for it. Smaller parcels arrive by UPS or FedEx without an appointment.

Is there a warranty?

Yes. Products purchased through Topture include the applicable manufacturer’s warranty, subject to the manufacturer’s terms. You’ll find the warranty details for each product under the "Warranty" tab on its product page, and we help with troubleshooting and warranty coordination if an issue comes up.

Do you have a showroom?

We don’t have a showroom — we sell online. Our team is available by phone, email and chat to help you compare models, sizes and heaters, and we can send dimensions, installation manuals and electrical requirements before you buy.

Where do you deliver to?

We deliver throughout the 48 contiguous states, with curbside freight delivery for large items. Free shipping and standard rates apply there only. Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, other U.S. islands and Canada are quoted separately, depending on the brand and model. We can't ship freight or oversized items to P.O. boxes.

Do you ship internationally?
