Indoor Saunas

Topture's indoor sauna collection holds 31 saunas from SunRay, Finnmark Designs, Dundalk LeisureCraft, ThermaSol, Kohler and SaunaLife, made for a room inside the home and listed for one to five people. They heat with an electric sauna heater, with infrared heaters, or with both, as in Finnmark's two Trinity models.

Indoor saunas by heat, heater and size

An indoor sauna short list comes from three decisions: how it heats, whether its heater comes with it, and how many people it has to seat.

  • Stones or infrared. If you want to pour water on hot stones, choose one of the indoor traditional saunas: SunRay supplies a water cask and spoon for adding water to the stones with models such as the Aston and the Baldwin. For heat from infrared heaters instead, choose one of the indoor infrared saunas, and for both in one cabin, Finnmark's two Trinity models, see the indoor hybrid saunas. How infrared and traditional heat compare sets the two kinds of heat side by side.
  • Heater included or chosen. If you would rather not pick a heater, start with the 27 saunas here from SunRay, Finnmark, Kohler and ThermaSol, which come with their heat source. SunRay says it ships a Harvia heater with every one of its traditional saunas and lists the carbon heaters among each indoor infrared cabin's inclusions; Bathing Brands says the Kohler C1 kit includes a FERO heater with stones; ThermaSol includes a Harvia Virta heater with each of its three cabins here; and Finnmark fits infrared heaters to each FD sauna and a Harvia heater to its two Trinity models. Choose the SaunaLife X2 or one of Dundalk LeisureCraft's three saunas here if you want to pick the heater yourself: each lets you choose its heater package, with a HUUM DROP package marked Recommended.
  • How many people. Match an indoor sauna's size to the number of people who will usually use it at once. Topture lists eleven saunas here for four people, ten for two, six for three, three for five and the Finnmark FD-1 for one. At the small end, SunRay rates the Sedona for one to two people and sells the Aston as a 1–2 person sauna, and Dundalk LeisureCraft says the Nook comfortably seats 1–2 people. The Kohler C1 and the ThermaSol Lumaria, both listed for five, also come in smaller sizes: Bathing Brands lists the C1 in sizes for up to 2, 3 and 5 people, and ThermaSol sells the Lumaria in a Medium for 2–3 people and a Large for 4–5.

Indoor saunas are also grouped as infrared saunas, corner saunas, sauna kits and red light therapy saunas.

If the sauna could stand in the yard instead, compare the outdoor saunas; choosing between an indoor and an outdoor sauna weighs the two placements.

For a low ceiling, start with the SunRay cabins SunRay lists at 75 inches tall. For a head-to-head between two finalists, how to choose an indoor sauna goes through heat, fit, power and assembly step by step.

Indoor sauna prices and what they include

Starting prices in this collection run from $2,698 for the SunRay Evansport to $23,604 for the ThermaSol Astra. SunRay's cabins fill most of the lower part of that range, and Kohler's C1 kits and ThermaSol's cabins the upper end.

Freight within the contiguous United States is included in the price of every SunRay, Finnmark, Dundalk LeisureCraft and Kohler sauna here. The SaunaLife X2 carries SaunaLife's own freight charge at any order value, and freight for ThermaSol saunas is quoted per order.

Compare indoor saunas on the delivered, heated total rather than the starting price: the sauna, a heater package where one is chosen, any freight charge or quote, and the electrical work the room needs.

Indoor sauna power: 120 V or 240 V by model

An indoor sauna's power supply comes from its maker's documents or its heater package's:

  • Dedicated 110–120 V outlet or 120 V circuit: SunRay lists its eight indoor infrared cabins here for 110–120 V and its manual says to plug no other appliance into the sauna's outlet; Finnmark's manuals call for a dedicated 120 V circuit for each of its saunas here listed for one or two people; on the FD-4 Trinity, that circuit serves the infrared side.
  • Dedicated 220–240 V circuit: SunRay's nine indoor traditional cabins, which SunRay compares to an electric dryer's circuit; the Kohler C1 in every size; ThermaSol's three cabins at 240 V single-phase, with their LED lighting at 110 V; and Finnmark's FD-3 at 240 V. Rule these out if the room has no 240 V circuit and one cannot be added.
  • Set by the heater package: the four saunas here sold with heater packages take the supply of the electric heater package chosen with them; Dundalk LeisureCraft builds its Element saunas for electric sauna heaters only.
  • Trinity stone heaters: Finnmark lists the Harvia Vega Compact in the FD-4 at 120 V and 15.9 A, and the Harvia KIP45B in the FD-5 Trinity XL at 240 V and 18.8 A, for which Bathing Brands also lists 208 V three-phase operation. Finnmark's manuals give no circuit for either heater, and the FD-5's infrared supply is a question to put to Topture before the wiring is planned.

An indoor sauna's electricity use depends on its power rating and how long it runs, and the ratings here differ widely: Finnmark's manual gives the FD-1's infrared power as 1,450 W, SunRay lists the Baldwin's Harvia heater at 3.5 kW, and ThermaSol lists 9 kW for the heater in each of its indoor cabins here. Your electricity rate then sets the running cost.

Plan an indoor sauna's circuit before delivery, with the questions to settle with your electrician in hand. Finnmark's manuals say all wiring should be done by a licensed electrician. Your licensed electrician sizes the breaker and wire from the sauna's manual, the heater's manual where the sauna has a stone heater, and your local code.

Indoor sauna room, delivery and assembly

The room an indoor sauna stands in has to meet its maker's conditions:

  • SunRay: a fairly level surface in a dry area for its indoor infrared cabins, with a floor separator if the floor is damp, and indoor use only for its indoor saunas.
  • Finnmark: a solid surface in a dry area and at least 3 inches of clearance above the sauna and on all sides; each FD sauna is a freestanding unit that should not be built into any structure, and Finnmark's manuals suggest a basement, attic, garage, playroom, spare bedroom or new extension.
  • Kohler: the C1 indoors, in a location with access to conditioned air.
  • ThermaSol: each of its three cabins here indoors, within a dry, climate-controlled space.

For an indoor sauna room without conditioned air or climate control, rule out the Kohler C1 and ThermaSol's cabins, and if the sauna has to be built in, rule out Finnmark's FD saunas.

Saunas from this collection ship by freight to a curbside delivery booked by appointment, with a liftgate on most shipments, and an adult signs the Bill of Lading. Bathing Brands, ThermaSol's distributor, says ThermaSol's three cabins arrive flat-packed on a flatbed trailer and are offloaded by the freight company on a residential delivery, with no forklift or loading dock needed. Dundalk LeisureCraft's shipping information puts unloading on the buyer instead: the customer, not the trucking company, is responsible for unloading the sauna crate from the truck.

SunRay says the boxes its panels ship in fit through any door 24 inches or wider, and Kohler says the C1 arrives in sections that are easy to carry through interior corridors and doorways. Raise site-access questions before you order.

Every indoor sauna in this collection arrives as panels or sections that are assembled where it will stand. SunRay's pre-built panels lock together with two people and a screwdriver, and SunRay says its indoor infrared saunas assemble in under an hour; Dundalk LeisureCraft says the Element arrives in ready-to-assemble panels; SaunaLife says two people can install the X2 in 4 to 6 hours; and ThermaSol's installation manuals call for 2 to 4 people. If you plan to assemble it yourself, SunRay says its saunas need no special tools and no contractor, while Kohler recommends a professional installer for the C1 and Finnmark's manuals state "Professional installation required".
