6kW sauna heater sizing by room volume

A 6kW sauna heater is sized to the room's volume: each maker prints a minimum and a maximum room size for its 6 kW model, and the model fits a room that falls between the two. For the 6 kW models in this collection those ranges start between 141 and 177 cubic feet and end between 294 and 318 cubic feet, set out model by model in the comparison table.

For a Harvia heater in a room with glass, brick, concrete or tile walls without insulation, Harvia adds about 3.9 cu ft to the room's volume for each sq ft of them (1.2 m³ per m²), counts a glass door the same way and multiplies the volume of a solid-log sauna by 1.5. To choose a HUUM CLIFF, STEEL or HIVE Mini for a room with uninsulated brick, tile or glass walls, add 3.3 cu ft to the room's volume for each square foot of them, as HUUM's manuals do.

To choose the output, add these allowances to the room's volume where they apply, then compare the total with the ranges:

• Inside a 6 kW range: the 6 kW model is within its maker's rating, and a room of 177 to 294 cubic feet falls inside every 6 kW range here, so choose between them by controls and package.
• Below the 6 kW minimum: four KIP listings and the DROP heater listing here also sell a 4.5 kW model, which Harvia sizes for 100–210 cubic feet and HUUM for 106–248 cubic feet; choose it when the room sits under the 6 kW model's range and inside the 4.5 kW model's.
• A KIP room of 170 to 210 cubic feet before the allowance: it sits inside both the KIP 4.5 kW and 6 kW ranges; choose the 6 kW model if Harvia's allowance for glass and uninsulated walls takes the room past the 4.5 kW model's 210 cubic feet, and otherwise either output is within Harvia's rating.
• Past the 6 kW maximum: choose the next model on the same listing, where it sells one: Harvia sizes the KIP 8 kW for 250–425 cubic feet, the Cilindro Half 8 kW for 141–431 and The Wall 8 kW for 177–431; HUUM sizes the DROP 7.5 kW for 248–389, and its CLIFF, STEEL and HIVE Mini step from 6 to 9 kW, sized for 283–460.

Choose among the 6 kW models here by where you want to run the sauna from and where the heater will stand:

• Controls on the heater: choose the KIP or the Cilindro Half with built-in controls, or The Wall; each has its thermostat and timer on the heater, with no Wi-Fi control in Harvia's documents.
• A separate control panel: choose a separate-control model: the KIP with separate control runs from a Xenio CX170; the Cilindro Half with separate control, the Spirit and the Virta from a Xenio CX30 or CX45, and Bathing Brands also pairs these three with a Fenix control; and HUUM's DROP, CLIFF, STEEL and HIVE Mini from a UKU.
• App control: choose a separate-control model with a Wi-Fi control. Harvia's Wi-Fi controls, the Xenio -XW versions and the Fenix, connect to the MyHarvia app, and HUUM's heaters run from the HUUM app through a UKU Wi-Fi; the UKU Local runs from its wall panel only, with no app. For app control at a different output, compare sauna heaters with Wi-Fi control.
• Wall or floor: choose the KIP, the Spirit or The Wall, which hang on the sauna wall, or HUUM's DROP on its wall frame, to keep the heater off the floor; choose the Virta, the Cilindro Half or HUUM's CLIFF, STEEL or HIVE Mini to stand it on the floor.

Every heater-only listing in this collection ships without sauna stones, by its maker's or its US distributor's account. Choose between a package and the heater alone by what you already have:

• No control or stones yet: choose a package: Harvia's KIP kit and package with built-in controls add the stones; its KIP kit and package with Wi-Fi add a Xenio CX170 Wi-Fi control and the stones, and the Virta 6 kW package a Xenio CX30 Wi-Fi control and the stones; HUUM's 6 kW packages add a UKU control, Local or Wi-Fi, and HUUM stones.
• A control already in place, or one you want to pick yourself: choose the heater alone; its product page offers the stones and, on a separate-control heater, the matching control as add-ons, and sauna stones ship free within the contiguous United States when ordered with a heater.

Electrical supply for a 6kW sauna heater

A 6kW sauna heater here runs on 240 V: each maker lists its 6 kW model for a 240 V supply. Two Harvia KIP listings add a 208 V three-phase version: the stainless KIP with separate control, which Harvia lists in 240 V and 208 V versions, and Topture's multi-size KIP package with Wi-Fi; the black KIP with separate control and the KIP 6kW kit with Wi-Fi are listed for 240 V single-phase only.

In the makers' figures, every 6 kW model here draws 25 amps in total on a 240 V supply, and Harvia lists the KIP 6 kW at 16.7 amps on 208 V three-phase. One step up, Harvia lists the KIP 8 kW at 33.3 amps and HUUM the DROP 7.5 kW at 31.25 amps on 240 V.

HUUM's UKU control manual says to install the control on a dedicated circuit and recommends new wiring, with supply conductors sized as the heater's manual states; it adds that only a licensed electrician may do the electrical work it describes. If the supply your electrician can provide stops short of an 8 kW model's draw, choose the 6 kW model on the same listing; on a 208 V three-phase supply, choose one of those two KIP listings. Your licensed electrician sizes the breaker and wire from the manual that ships with the heater and your local code.
