The SunRay Southport (model 300SN) is a 3-person indoor traditional sauna built from Canadian hemlock, with a tempered glass front and a single bench, and a 4.5 kW Harvia electric heater with stones included. It measures 69" W × 47" D × 75" H outside and 65" W × 43" D × 69" H inside. It is a wet/dry sauna: water ladled onto the heater stones raises the humidity, and SunRay supplies a wooden bucket and ladle for that. SunRay lists the Southport at 442 lbs, and it ships by LTL freight as a kit for assembly indoors.
The Southport is the 3-person model in SunRay's SN series of indoor saunas in Canadian hemlock. The 2-person SunRay Baldwin is 59" × 42" with a 3.5 kW heater, and the 4-person SunRay Tiburon is 63" × 69" with two-tier seating and a 6 kW heater. The 3-person SunRay Westlake is 71" × 42" in cedar, with a slate-colored stone wall, Bluetooth audio and a 6 kW heater. For other sizes and brands, see our indoor traditional saunas.
How the SunRay Southport is built
SunRay builds the Southport for indoor use, with the heater, its wall rack and safety railing, the light and the accessories part of the kit.
- Canadian hemlock cabin: the wall panels screw together, and the top panel sits on the walls.
- 4.5 kW Harvia electric heater: supplied with stones and hung on a wall-mounting rack inside a wooden safety railing. SunRay does not name the Harvia model.
- Heat: SunRay rates the Southport to 170°F. A temperature sensor mounts on the wall above the heater, and the heater's own manual, which ships with the sauna, covers its operation.
- Single bench: SunRay lists the Southport as a single-bench model; the bench has a backrest and a cup holder.
- Glass front: a tempered glass door between two narrow fixed glass panels.
- Ventilation: an air ventilation system, as SunRay lists it.
- Lighting: an interior light.
- Accessories: a thermo-hygrometer, a sand timer, and a wooden bucket and ladle.
What comes with the SunRay Southport?

Can you assemble the SunRay Southport yourself?
The cabin, yes; the heater's electrical connection, no. SunRay's SN manual is written for at least two adults, and SunRay names a Phillips screwdriver or a drill with a Phillips bit as the only tool. SunRay estimates about two hours for the build. The manual says only an authorized, professional electrician may connect the heater.
The manual builds the Southport in this order: the floor panel, the back panel set into the floor panel's groove (it needs the side panels to stand firmly), the left and right panels screwed to the back panel, the front panel screwed to both sides with the top panel placed on the walls, then the seat panels. Next the heater's wall-mounting rack is screwed to the wall, the electrician connects the heater, and the heater is hung on the rack and locked with a screw. A wooden safety railing is screwed around the heater, then the light goes in, and last the temperature sensor, on the wall above the heater, on the heater's center line, about 4" below the ceiling.
Before the sauna arrives
- Choose the room. The Southport is for indoor use only; see "Where can the SunRay Southport be installed?" below.
- Have a licensed electrician run the dedicated 240 V circuit to that spot, and book them for the day of assembly, when the heater is connected.
- Plan how the boxed panels will get from the curb to the room, and keep the boxes somewhere dry until assembly: SunRay's manual says not to store the sauna in damp places. See Shipping below.
Tools you supply
A Phillips screwdriver or a drill with a Phillips bit, and a second pair of hands.
What electrical service does the SunRay Southport need?
A dedicated 240 V circuit rated for 30 A, the same kind of circuit an electric clothes dryer uses; SunRay lists it as 220–240 V, 50/60 Hz. The heater draws 4,500 W, and nothing else can share the circuit. If your electrical panel has no room for another 240 V breaker, your electrician may need to upgrade it before delivery.
SunRay does not say whether the Southport ships with a plug or is meant to be hard-wired. SunRay's manual says the heater may only be connected to the supply by an authorized, professional electrician, and it puts that step in the middle of the build: after the heater's wall rack is fixed and before the heater is hung on it. The Harvia heater's own manual ships with the sauna; give it and SunRay's manual to your electrician, and contact us before you order if you want us to confirm the requirements with you.
Where can the SunRay Southport be installed?
Indoors only. SunRay sells the Southport as an indoor sauna, SunRay's warranty certificate states that indoor saunas are for indoor use only, and SunRay's manual lists the series for household use only. The manual gives no floor or ceiling-height requirements; it simply starts the build with the floor panel laid on the floor.
The room needs space for the 69" × 47" cabin and its 75" height, and the dedicated 240 V circuit close by. SunRay publishes no wall or ceiling clearances, so if the space is tight, contact us with the room's dimensions before you order.
Looking after the hemlock
SunRay's manual says to clean the sauna with a wet cotton towel and dry it with a clean, dry one, and not to use benzene, alcohol or strong cleaning chemicals, which damage the wood and its protective layer. It also warns against throwing too much water on the stones, because the steam is boiling hot, and against hanging clothes to dry in the sauna. SunRay's warranty treats surface cracks and minor blemishes in the wood as normal rather than defects.
How is the SunRay Southport delivered?
The SunRay Southport ships by LTL freight, with its panels boxed and strapped to a wooden pallet, and SunRay lists its shipping weight at 442 lbs. Delivery is curbside with a lift gate, which lowers the shipment to the driveway; moving the boxes from there to the room where the sauna will stand is up to you, so plan the route before the truck arrives. SunRay says its boxes fit through any doorway 24" or wider.
| Freight type | LTL truck; boxed panels on a wooden pallet |
|---|---|
| Delivery point | Curbside, lowered to the driveway by lift gate |
| Shipping weight | 442 lbs (SunRay) |
| Shipping cost | Free within the contiguous US |
| Appointment | Required; someone must be present to inspect and sign |
The carrier will reach out to book the delivery appointment once the shipment reaches their local terminal.
Inspect the shipment before you sign. SunRay's warranty excludes freight damage caused by the carrier, so note any visible damage on the delivery receipt, photograph it, and contact us before you start assembly. SunRay's delivery policy asks for internal damage found after unpacking to be reported within 3 business days of delivery.
SunRay's traditional sauna manual covers its whole SN series, the Southport included: the parts, the build sequence, the heater's mounting and connection, and care, so your electrician can review it before delivery. Its model table and supply ratings are written for the whole series, and its heater outputs differ from SunRay's current figures, so use the specifications above for the Southport's heater and circuit. Its warranty page is superseded by SunRay's current warranty certificate. The Harvia heater's own manual ships with the sauna.

Electrical Requirements
Indoor traditional saunas require a dedicated 240V circuit in order to accommodate the high heat output of the heater. Please reference the product specification sheet to determine the specific requirements for your sauna.
Ventilation Requirements
Indoor traditional saunas are equipped with an air vent in the ceiling. This air vent is designed to help circulate heat throughout the sauna during the heat-up phase and to allow moisture to leave the sauna if you are adding humidity and using it as a steam sauna. The sauna cabin air vent also allows you to lower the sauna temperature without opening the door if the temperature inside the sauna becomes too hot.
Maximum Temperature
SunRay indoor traditional saunas have a maximum operating temperature of 170 degrees Fahrenheit. The normal operating range is 160-170 degrees Fahrenheit.
Traditional Sauna Shipping
All traditional saunas are shipped via truck freight with curbside and lift-gate delivery service unless otherwise specified. SunRay traditional saunas and steam saunas are shipped on a wooden pallet with removable bracing to protect the sauna boxes. Please contact us if you have special requirements for delivery. The trucking company will call you to schedule a delivery appointment.
Sauna Warranty
SunRay home saunas carry a 7-year structural warranty and 1-year parts warranty. All SunRay sauna parts, including electronic parts and the electric heater, are guaranteed for 1 year against defects.
Electrical Connection
Indoor traditional saunas for the home come with a power cord attached to the heater. The power cord does not have a plug. It is designed to be hard-wired into a junction box or you can put a plug on the end of the power cord. Please note that the power requirements differ by sauna model. Consult your traditional sauna user manual for the specific power requirements.
Assembly and Installation
An indoor traditional sauna is easily assembled by two adults. The typical assembly time is 1 hour. No special tools are required for the sauna to be assembled.
Cleaning Your Home Sauna
Your home sauna should be cleaned a minimum of every 3-4 months or more frequently depending on usage. To clean the interior of your home sauna, use a mixture of baking soda and water (3 teaspoons baking soda to 1 gallon of warm water). Using a clean towel, wipe down the interior of the sauna, focusing on where sweat accumulates. Let the area dry with the sauna door open. Use a standard ammonia-based glass cleaner to clean the sauna doors and windows.
Traditional Sauna Origin
SunRay traditional sauna cabins are constructed from Hemlock or Cedar wood imported from Canada. SunRay's manufacturing facility is in China and its distribution facility is in the United States. Warranty claims are handled by SunRay Saunas, based in Richmond, VA, and Topture helps you coordinate them.
Sauna Specification Sheets
Each SunRay sauna has a specification sheet with all the details of the kit, including the power requirements. Contact us if you would like a copy.
Placing an Indoor Sauna Outdoors
SunRay indoor traditional saunas are not rated for outdoor use. They have an open top that is not protected from the elements. If you place the indoor sauna outdoors, it must be covered and protected from the elements. Indoor saunas that are placed outdoors will not be covered under SunRay's sauna warranty.
Sauna Heating Time
The average heating time for traditional home saunas ranges between 30-45 minutes depending on the room temperature, size of the sauna, and the heater type.
Ceiling Clearance
You need at least 3-4 inches between the top of the home sauna and the ceiling. This allows the electrical components on the top of the sauna to receive the appropriate amount of airflow.
Sauna Stones
SunRay indoor traditional saunas come with heater stones that sit on top of the heater elements. The heater stones are used to help radiate heat throughout the sauna and can be used to create humidity inside the sauna. DO NOT pour excess water on the heater stones as it will cause damage to the heater. To create humidity in the sauna, simply drizzle a small amount of water over the stones once they are hot.
Sauna Heater Placement
All indoor traditional saunas are equipped with either a wall mounting bracket or cradle for the heater to sit in. DO NOT place the sauna heater directly on the floor as it could become a fire hazard. The sauna must be elevated off the floor to create airflow through the heating elements.
Sauna Lighting
All indoor traditional saunas come with ambient dome lighting. Saunas with dome lighting can be connected to the heater so that the light turns off when the heater turns off. Alternatively, you can wire the lighting separately on its own switch. Consult your sauna heating wiring guide for instructions on how to wire your sauna light into the heater.
