Sauna paneling profiles

Sauna paneling profiles and the woods each comes in
Profile Face Woods
STS4 nickel gap (1x4, 1x5) Narrow, angular grooves give a nickel-size gap between boards Aspen, Thermo-Aspen, Alder, Thermo-Radiata Pine, Thermo-Spruce, Spruce; Western Red Cedar in a nickel-gap board
Grace large gap (2x3) Broad, angular grooves for a bolder look Aspen, Thermo-Aspen, Alder
Groove-S (1x3) Narrow slats separated by evenly spaced grooves Aspen, Thermo-Aspen
V-joint (1/2x4, 1x4) A V-shaped joint between boards Western Red Cedar, Hemlock

ProSaunas notes that its profiles can be combined, for example a Groove-S feature wall beside nickel-gap walls. Aspen also comes in black-finished Midnight Black and Brushed Midnight Black boards.

Sauna paneling lengths

Most paneling comes in lengths from 1 ft to 10 ft; the Western Red Cedar 1/2x4 runs to 13 ft and the spruce 1x4 to 14 ft. A board long enough to span a wall in one piece leaves no end joints across it, and the length you choose also sets the wood freight, which depends on the longest board in the order.

How much sauna paneling to order

Every paneling page lists the face width a board covers once installed, which is narrower than the board itself because the tongue sits inside the next groove: an Aspen 1x4 nickel-gap board is 3.54″ wide and covers 3.15″, and the 2x3 Grace board covers 2.2″. For horizontal boards that span a wall, divide the wall height by the covered width: a wall 7 ft high takes 84″ ÷ 3.15″ = 27 Aspen 1x4 nickel-gap boards. Count the other walls and the ceiling the same way and allow extra for cuts around the door, windows and corners.

Sauna paneling next steps

  • Benches: match the walls with sauna bench wood in the same species.
  • Corners and the door frame: sauna trim finishes the joints the paneling leaves.
  • Species still open: compare the woods on the sauna wood page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which sauna paneling profile should I choose?

It is a question of look. The STS4 nickel gap gives narrow grooves between boards, the Grace large gap broad angular grooves, Groove-S a fluted face of narrow slats, and V-joint a V-shaped joint. ProSaunas notes the profiles can be combined, such as one Groove-S wall beside nickel-gap walls.

How much wall does one paneling board cover?

Less than its width, because the tongue sits inside the next board's groove. Each product page lists the covered width: an Aspen 1x4 nickel-gap board is 3.54 inches wide and covers 3.15 inches, and the 2x3 Grace large-gap board covers 2.2 inches.

Can the same paneling go on the walls and the ceiling?

Yes. Tongue-and-groove paneling is used on sauna walls and ceilings alike, so one profile can line the whole room.

How is sauna wood shipped?

Sauna wood ships to the contiguous US at one flat freight rate per order, set by the number of boards across all the sauna wood in the cart and the length of the longest board. The rate table is in the Shipping tab on every sauna wood page. Boards over 10 ft and orders of 1,000 boards or more are quoted after you order.
