Sauna heater kit contents: control, stones or chimney
A sauna heater package lists the heater together with the parts it runs with, and those parts follow the heat source and the maker:
-
Harvia KIP with built-in controls. The KIP's thermostat and timer sit on the heater itself, and these four packages pair it with Harvia stones.
-
Harvia with a separate control. Apart from the Club, the Harvia electric packages here with a separate control pair the heater with a Xenio control with Wi-Fi and Harvia stones. The two Club packages also run from a separate Harvia control and list their parts on their product pages.
-
HUUM electric. The HUUM electric packages here combine the heater with HUUM stones and a UKU control in the version you pick: the UKU Local, run from its wall panel with no app, or the UKU Wi-Fi with a Black, Glass or Mirror panel for HUUM's app. The HIVE 12, 15 and 18 add HUUM's UKU Extension Box, as the UKU alone runs heaters up to 11 kW.
-
Saunum. Topture lists the Air and Air L packages with the heater and its climate-equalizing module, Saunum's AirIQ Wi-Fi control with its power unit and door and temperature sensors, and sauna stones.
-
Wood-burning stoves. Each Harvia and HUUM wood stove kit here pairs the stove with its stones and a chimney kit. Protective parts vary: three of the Harvia kits here add a protective sheath and Harvia's protective bedding, and each HUUM wood package except the HIVE Wood 17 LS lists a HUUM protective bed or bedding.
Two control questions settle which kind of kit fits:
-
Electric, with no wall panel. Pick a KIP package with built-in controls; Harvia documents no Wi-Fi control for that version of the KIP.
-
App control from a phone. Pick a Harvia package with a Xenio Wi-Fi control for Harvia's MyHarvia app, a Saunum package for the Saunum app, or a HUUM package with the UKU Wi-Fi rather than the UKU Local for HUUM's app.
Sauna heater packages by maker: Harvia, HUUM and Saunum
Once electric or wood is settled, the maker narrows a sauna heater package further. The electric packages here are also grouped by brand: Harvia electric heater packages, HUUM electric heater packages and Saunum sauna heater packages.
-
Harvia, if price leads. Start with Harvia's KIP: the four KIP listings with controls on the heater hold the lowest prices here, the 4.5 kW from $1,214.
-
HUUM, for a heavy stone load. Choose HUUM's electric HIVE, which holds 551 lb (250 kg) of stones, or its STEEL or HIVE Mini at about 330 lb; stone loads heater by heater are compared under sauna heaters with rocks.
-
Saunum, for a climate-equalizing module. Choose the Air or Air L package if you want that module with the heater; Saunum's outputs and room sizes for them are on their product pages.
Sauna heater kit output by room volume
Output for a sauna heater kit follows the room's volume, not its seat count: measure length, width and height in feet, add the volume its maker assigns to uninsulated walls where the manual gives one (Harvia, HUUM's CLIFF, STEEL, HIVE and HIVE Flow, Minis included, and Saunum's Air and Air L), and choose a heater whose printed room range covers the total.
Harvia adds about 3.9 cubic feet for every square foot of glass, glass block, brick, concrete or tile wall without insulation, counts glass doors too and multiplies a solid-log room's volume by 1.5; in Harvia's example, a glass door makes a 10 m³ room call for a heater sized for 12 m³. For the CLIFF and STEEL, HUUM's US manuals count every square foot of brick, tile or glass wall without insulation as 3.3 more cubic feet. Its HIVE and HIVE Flow manuals, Minis included, use the same figure.
With the total in hand, choose the output whose makers' ranges cover it:
-
4.5 kW. For a small room, pick a 4.5 kW kit: Harvia sizes its KIP 4.5 kW for 100–210 cubic feet, and HUUM's current manual sizes the DROP 4.5 kW for 106–248.
-
6 kW. Pick from Harvia's KIP 6 kW, which covers 170–300 cubic feet, its Virta 6 kW (177–294) or a 6 kW HUUM, the HIVE Mini, STEEL, CLIFF or DROP, each sized for 177–318 in HUUM's current US manuals.
-
7.5 to 8 kW. Start with HUUM's DROP 7.5 kW (248–389 cubic feet in its current manual), Harvia's KIP 8 kW (250–425) or its Virta and Virta Combi 8 kW (177–431 each).
-
9 kW. Start with Harvia's Virta 9 kW (177–494 cubic feet) or Cilindro Half 9 kW (141–494), or a 9 kW HUUM, the HIVE Mini, STEEL, CLIFF or DROP, each sized for 283–460 in HUUM's current US manuals.
-
10 to 10.5 kW. Start with Harvia's Virta or Virta Combi 10.5 kW (177–635 cubic feet each), its Cilindro Half 10.5 kW (141–636) or its Club 10 kW (390–600).
-
12 kW and up. Start with HUUM's HIVE 12, 15 or 18 (424–636, 530–813 and 636–989 cubic feet) or Harvia's Club 12.5 kW (500–750).
-
HUUM sizes without an output here. For a room of 106–177 cubic feet you can also choose HUUM's CLIFF Mini or STEEL Mini, and for 354–566 the top size of its CLIFF, STEEL or HIVE Mini; the output for each is on its product page.
Rule out any package whose printed range ends below your total or starts above it. Saunum's Air and Air L ranges are on their product pages, and a wood stove kit is chosen by its stove's own printed range.
Sauna heater package or the heater alone
A heater bought on its own still needs its stones, and an electric heater without controls on it also needs a separate control: Harvia's KIP manual says a separate-control KIP needs a control unit bought separately, and HUUM's US manuals give its electric heaters no built-in control. For the Virta Combi, Harvia's manual names the Xenio Combi CX30C on 240 V, the control in both Virta Combi packages here.
-
Package. Choose a sauna heater package if nothing for the heater is on hand yet: most packages here list the stones and, where the heater needs one, the control with the heater as one item.
-
Heater alone. Choose the bare heater if you already have its stones and, where it needs one, a suitable control, or if you want a control other than the one a package lists; for the DROP, CLIFF, STEEL and HIVE Mini, HUUM's manuals also allow another certified sauna-heater control rated for the heater's output. Bare heaters are under sauna heaters, and by maker under Harvia sauna heaters and HUUM sauna heaters.
-
Saunum Air or Air L. Rule out the heater alone unless an AirIQ control is already in place: Saunum's manuals say the Air and Air L operate only with Saunum's AirIQ control.
Sauna heater kit wiring: 240 V supply and the electrician
Every electric kit here comes in a 240 V version as its maker lists the heater. The current it draws is the maker's figure and differs widely between kits: Harvia lists the KIP 8 kW at 33.3 amps on 240 V single-phase, and HUUM lists the HIVE 15 at 62.5 amps on 240 V. On a DIY build the supply circuit stays outside the kit: HUUM's UKU manual puts the control on a dedicated circuit and allows only a licensed electrician to do the electrical work it describes.
-
Neither 240 V nor 208 V at the sauna. Rule out the electric kits and look at the wood stove kits: Topture's listing gives Harvia's M3 stove no electrical connection, and HUUM offers its HIVE Wood for saunas without one.
-
A 208 V supply. Choose the 208 V three-phase version of the Club 10 kW package or of the multi-size KIP package with Xenio control, or a CLIFF or STEEL package, Minis included, which HUUM also rates for 208 V. HUUM's room ranges on this page are its 240 V figures, so size a CLIFF or STEEL on 208 V from the 208 V rating in HUUM's manual and check it with Topture's Lifetime Expert Support before choosing.
-
A 240 V supply. Choose any electric kit here by room size and take its maker's amps to your electrician. Your licensed electrician sizes the breaker and wire from the manual that ships with the heater and your local code.
Parts a sauna heater kit leaves out, and delivery
A sauna heater kit is the heater side of a DIY sauna build, not the room: the enclosed sauna and its installation stay on your list, along with a few parts some wood stove kits leave out.
-
HIVE Flow or HIVE Flow Mini on a combustible floor. If the floor in front of the stove door is combustible, budget for a metal floor plate: HUUM's manual requires a sheet-metal plate there, and none of the four HIVE Flow packages includes one. On a combustible floor the same manual also makes a HUUM thermal plate or other non-combustible base under the stove mandatory, with at least a 1 3/16 in air gap: ask Topture's Lifetime Expert Support whether the protective bed or bedding in your package serves as that base.
-
HIVE Wood chimney height. If the flue needs more height than the chimney kit gives, plan on extension pipes, which the three HIVE Wood packages leave out; HUUM's manual has a specialist make the chimney connection.
-
HIVE Wood 17 LS fired from another room. If the floor in front of its furnace door is combustible, add the fire-resistant floor protection HUUM's manual calls for there; this package has no floor bed and leaves that protection out.
-
Harvia M3 kit with chimney and stones. If the M3 will stand on tile or on a floor of inflammable material, pick one of the two M3 kits that include Harvia's WL100 bedding, or add bedding to this kit: Harvia's M3 manual asks for Harvia protective bedding under the stove on either floor (on tile, or similar heat radiation protection), and this kit ships without it. On an inflammable floor the manual also asks for nonflammable floor protection in front of the stove door.
Freight on every sauna heater package here is included within the contiguous United States. A wood stove kit travels by freight while electric heaters usually go by UPS or FedEx, and Topture's freight shipments carry full-value freight protection. The buying details for heater orders sit on the sauna heaters page.
Sauna heater package next steps: electric kits, wood kits or an expert
From here, a sauna heater package narrows in one of three ways:
-
Electric heat. Weigh the electric kits by control, Wi-Fi and supply under electric sauna heater packages.
-
Wood heat. Compare chimney routes, and which side of the wall a stove is fed from, under wood burning sauna heater packages.
-
Room or supply still open. Topture's Lifetime Expert Support helps size a kit to the room, by phone at (833) 419-1774, live chat or email at contact@topture.com, or through the contact page.
