The SunRay Seneca (model 300D5) is a 3-person outdoor traditional sauna in western red cedar with a sealed weatherproof finish, a metal roof, a full-length glass door in a black frame, and a 6 kW Harvia electric heater with stones included. Its roof covers a 78" W × 71" D footprint, and the cabin beneath it is 61" W × 51" D, as given in SunRay's D5 assembly manual and on its pre-relaunch product page; SunRay's current page does not list the height, interior dimensions or weight. The Seneca is a wet/dry sauna, with a wooden bucket and ladle for pouring water on the stones. It ships by LTL freight as a kit that you assemble on site.
The Seneca is the 3-person model in SunRay's D5 outdoor contemporary series. The 4-person SunRay Denali uses the same manual, western red cedar, metal roof and 6 kW heater under a roof of up to 89" × 83" and adds a side bench. For aged Canadian hemlock with a 4.5 kW heater, the 3-person SunRay Waverly has the same 61" × 51" cabin footprint under a 73" × 63" roof. For other sizes and brands, see our outdoor traditional saunas and cedar saunas.
How the SunRay Seneca is built
SunRay seals the Seneca's cedar cabin for outdoor placement and ships the heater, lights and accessories with it.
- Western red cedar: the wood SunRay lists for the Seneca, with a sealed weatherproof finish.
- Metal roof: it overhangs the 61" × 51" cabin to a 78" × 71" footprint.
- Glass door: full length, in a black frame; the inner and outer handles bolt together through the glass.
- 6 kW Harvia electric heater: comes with stones and sits in a wooden cradle. SunRay does not name the Harvia model.
- Heat: up to 170°F. SunRay's D5 manual recommends setting 125–170°F and allowing about 45–60 minutes to warm up.
- Bench: one deep bench with a backrest, which SunRay says seats three adults or lets one adult lie down.
- Temperature control: you set the temperature on the thermostat, and the heater cycles on and off to hold it, per the D5 manual. The manual does not describe a separate control panel; the heater's own manual covers its controls.
- Lighting: interior and exterior lights. Inside, a sealed dome light sits in an upper corner, and SunRay lists it with automatic shut-off; outside, a light is mounted beside the door.
- Ventilation: a ceiling vent you can open for fresh air.
- Accessories: a hygrometer and thermometer, a sand timer, and a wooden bucket and ladle, which SunRay also calls a cask and spoon.

Can you assemble the SunRay Seneca yourself?
The cabin, yes, with enough help; the 240 V connection, no. SunRay's D5 assembly manual asks for at least two to four adults. SunRay lists a Phillips screwdriver or a drill with a Phillips bit for the fasteners, and the manual's sealing steps also call for a caulking gun and waterproof sealant. A licensed electrician makes the electrical connection.
In the D5 manual's order, the floor goes down on a solid, level surface, a layer of waterproof sealant goes under the back and side walls, and the back wall goes on. The side walls attach with their pre-installed buckles and the front wall with its inner buckles, and the door handles are joined through the glass door. The interior flat ceiling rests on the roof supports, the light wires are connected between the wall and ceiling panels, and the sealed dome light goes in an upper corner. Then come the bench and backrest, the outside roof (screwed down around its perimeter), the exterior light, sealant along the bottom of the door opening and the outside corners, the accessories, and finally the heater in its wooden cradle.
Before the sauna arrives
- Prepare the base: a sturdy, level surface such as a concrete pad, a wood deck or another solid surface. SunRay's D5 manual says the sauna should never sit directly on the ground and asks for a floor separator or moisture barrier where the ground is damp.
- Have a licensed electrician run a dedicated 240 V, 30 A circuit to the site. SunRay does not say whether the Seneca is hard-wired or connected by plug, so check the connection with us before the work is booked.
- Get waterproof sealant and a caulking gun for the sealing steps; SunRay does not say whether sealant is supplied.
- Plan how the boxed panels will get from the curb to the base. See Shipping below.
Tools you supply
A Phillips screwdriver or a drill with a Phillips bit, a caulking gun, and ladders for the outside roof, which the manual's photos show two people setting from ladders or steps on either side. Plan on two to four adults.
What electrical service does the SunRay Seneca need?
A dedicated 240 V circuit rated for 30 A, the same kind of circuit an electric clothes dryer uses; SunRay lists it as 220–240 V. The D5 manual rates the heater at 6,000 W, and the circuit must serve the sauna alone. If your electrical panel has no room for another 240 V breaker, your electrician may need to upgrade it before delivery.
A licensed electrician runs the circuit and connects the sauna. SunRay does not say whether the Seneca is hard-wired or connected by plug, and the D5 manual does not show the heater's wiring; it sends you to the Harvia heater manual supplied with the sauna for the voltage and amperage. Give both manuals to your electrician, and contact us before the circuit goes in so we can confirm the connection with you. The light wiring joins through connectors between the wall and ceiling panels during assembly.
How do you look after the SunRay Seneca outdoors?
Seal the exterior once a year. The D5 manual recommends waterproof sealant on the cabin exterior every year, and SunRay's warranty certificate makes annual resealing a condition of cover for outdoor saunas sold without a weather cover; SunRay lists no weather cover with the Seneca. The warranty treats surface cracks and minor blemishes in the wood as normal rather than defects.
How is the SunRay Seneca delivered?
The SunRay Seneca ships by LTL freight, its panels boxed and strapped to a wooden pallet. SunRay does not currently publish its shipping weight; ask us before delivery day if you need it to plan the move. Delivery is curbside with a lift gate, which lowers the shipment to the driveway, and moving it from there to the base is up to you, so plan the route before the truck arrives.
| Freight type | LTL truck; boxed panels on a wooden pallet |
|---|---|
| Delivery point | Curbside, lowered to the driveway by lift gate |
| Shipping weight | Not currently published by SunRay |
| Shipping cost | Free within the contiguous US |
| Appointment | Required; someone must be present to inspect and sign |
The carrier will reach out to book the delivery appointment once the shipment reaches their local terminal.
Inspect the shipment before you sign. SunRay's warranty excludes freight damage caused by the carrier, so note any visible damage on the delivery receipt, photograph it, and contact us before you start assembly. SunRay's delivery policy asks for internal damage found after unpacking to be reported within 3 business days of delivery.
SunRay's D5 series assembly manual covers the Seneca (300D5) and the Denali (400D5): the build sequence, the sealing steps, the lighting connections, the heater cradle and operation, so your electrician and your installer can read it before delivery. SunRay's support page now files the Seneca under its traditional outdoor series manual, which has no 300D5 entry; the D5 manual is the one that lists the Seneca. The Harvia heater's own manual, with the heater's electrical data, ships with the sauna.

Electrical Requirements
Indoor traditional saunas require a dedicated 240V circuit in order to accommodate the high heat output of the heater. Please reference the product specification sheet to determine the specific requirements for your sauna.
Ventilation Requirements
Indoor traditional saunas are equipped with an air vent in the ceiling. This air vent is designed to help circulate heat throughout the sauna during the heat-up phase and to allow moisture to leave the sauna if you are adding humidity and using it as a steam sauna. The sauna cabin air vent also allows you to lower the sauna temperature without opening the door if the temperature inside the sauna becomes too hot.
Maximum Temperature
SunRay indoor traditional saunas have a maximum operating temperature of 170 degrees Fahrenheit. The normal operating range is 160-170 degrees Fahrenheit.
Traditional Sauna Shipping
All traditional saunas are shipped via truck freight with curbside and lift-gate delivery service unless otherwise specified. SunRay traditional saunas and steam saunas are shipped on a wooden pallet with removable bracing to protect the sauna boxes. Please contact us if you have special requirements for delivery. The trucking company will call you to schedule a delivery appointment.
Sauna Warranty
SunRay home saunas carry a 7-year structural warranty and 1-year parts warranty. All SunRay sauna parts, including electronic parts and the electric heater, are guaranteed for 1 year against defects.
Electrical Connection
Indoor traditional saunas for the home come with a power cord attached to the heater. The power cord does not have a plug. It is designed to be hard-wired into a junction box or you can put a plug on the end of the power cord. Please note that the power requirements differ by sauna model. Consult your traditional sauna user manual for the specific power requirements.
Assembly and Installation
An indoor traditional sauna is easily assembled by two adults. The typical assembly time is 1 hour. No special tools are required for the sauna to be assembled.
Cleaning Your Home Sauna
Your home sauna should be cleaned a minimum of every 3-4 months or more frequently depending on usage. To clean the interior of your home sauna, use a mixture of baking soda and water (3 teaspoons baking soda to 1 gallon of warm water). Using a clean towel, wipe down the interior of the sauna, focusing on where sweat accumulates. Let the area dry with the sauna door open. Use a standard ammonia-based glass cleaner to clean the sauna doors and windows.
Traditional Sauna Origin
SunRay traditional sauna cabins are constructed from Hemlock or Cedar wood imported from Canada. SunRay's manufacturing facility is in China and its distribution facility is in the United States. Warranty claims are handled by SunRay Saunas, based in Richmond, VA, and Topture helps you coordinate them.
Sauna Specification Sheets
Each SunRay sauna has a specification sheet with all the details of the kit, including the power requirements. Contact us if you would like a copy.
Placing an Indoor Sauna Outdoors
SunRay indoor traditional saunas are not rated for outdoor use. They have an open top that is not protected from the elements. If you place the indoor sauna outdoors, it must be covered and protected from the elements. Indoor saunas that are placed outdoors will not be covered under SunRay's sauna warranty.
Sauna Heating Time
The average heating time for traditional home saunas ranges between 30-45 minutes depending on the room temperature, size of the sauna, and the heater type.
Ceiling Clearance
You need at least 3-4 inches between the top of the home sauna and the ceiling. This allows the electrical components on the top of the sauna to receive the appropriate amount of airflow.
Sauna Stones
SunRay indoor traditional saunas come with heater stones that sit on top of the heater elements. The heater stones are used to help radiate heat throughout the sauna and can be used to create humidity inside the sauna. DO NOT pour excess water on the heater stones as it will cause damage to the heater. To create humidity in the sauna, simply drizzle a small amount of water over the stones once they are hot.
Sauna Heater Placement
All indoor traditional saunas are equipped with either a wall mounting bracket or cradle for the heater to sit in. DO NOT place the sauna heater directly on the floor as it could become a fire hazard. The sauna must be elevated off the floor to create airflow through the heating elements.
Sauna Lighting
All indoor traditional saunas come with ambient dome lighting. Saunas with dome lighting can be connected to the heater so that the light turns off when the heater turns off. Alternatively, you can wire the lighting separately on its own switch. Consult your sauna heating wiring guide for instructions on how to wire your sauna light into the heater.
