How is the Harvia 50 installed?
The Harvia 50 stands, with no adjustable legs, on a floor strong enough to carry it, inside the safety distances below, and connects to a T600 chimney through its 5.5" (140 mm) opening. Harvia's manual says all local regulations apply, that no electrical devices, wires or combustible materials may sit within the safety distances, and that the local fire authorities can give detailed fire-safety requirements. Harvia's installation manual, under Documents, gives the step-by-step installation, the chimney connection details and the wood loads.
Does the Harvia 50 need floor protection?
It depends on the floor under the Harvia 50. A bare concrete floor at least 2.4" (60 mm) thick needs no protection. On a floor made of combustible material, Harvia's manual calls for a concrete slab at least 2.4" (60 mm) thick that reaches 11.8" (300 mm) beyond the sides and back of the stove, unless it stands against a wall, and at least 15.7" (400 mm) in front, supported slightly above the floor to keep the floor dry. A tile floor needs Harvia protective bedding or similar heat-radiation protection, because the adhesives and waterproofing under tile do not resist the heat; Harvia's manual names no bedding model for the Harvia 50, and Topture does not offer one for it. Leave at least 10.8 sq ft (1 m²) of clear floor in front of the stove for the person tending it.
Harvia 50 safety distances
Keep at least these distances between the Harvia 50 and anything that can burn.
Harvia 50 minimum safety distances (Harvia manual Y05-0128)
| Top of the stove to the ceiling |
47.2" (1,200 mm) |
| Sides, rear and front to combustible walls and benches |
19.7" (500 mm) |
| To a masonry wall |
2.0" (50 mm) if air can circulate in front and at one side; 3.9" (100 mm) in a recess |
| Clear floor in front of the stove |
At least 10.8 sq ft (1 m²) |
Harvia 50 behind a protective cover (Harvia manual Y05-0128)
| Single cover: fibre-reinforced cement board at least 0.28" (7 mm) thick, or sheet metal at least 0.04" (1 mm) thick |
Distance to combustibles halved to 9.8" (250 mm) |
| Double cover: two such boards |
Distance to combustibles cut to a quarter, 4.9" (125 mm) |
| Air gap behind the cover |
At least 1.2" (30 mm) |
| Cover height |
At least 23.6" (600 mm) above the top of the stove |

Connecting the Harvia 50 to a chimney
The Harvia 50 connects at the top or the rear through a 5.5" (140 mm) opening, to a chimney of temperature class T600 with a flue at least 4.3" (110 mm) across; the center of the rear opening is 35.0" (890 mm) above the floor. Harvia's manual describes connecting it to a masonry flue, through the rear opening or, with an angled smoke pipe, the top opening, using the flue connection pipe supplied with the stove. Harvia's WHP1500 chimney kit, WZ115155 pipe adapter and WP220ST water heater are made for 115 mm openings, and Harvia names no transition to the Harvia 50's 140 mm opening, so Topture does not offer a chimney or water heater for the Harvia 50; have a chimney professional plan the flue.
Does the Harvia 50 need a first firing?
Yes. Harvia's manual says to fire the Harvia 50 once before its first sauna, outdoors or in a well-ventilated room, until the paint stops smoking; one load of wood is enough. Load the stones only after the stove has cooled, and throw no water on it during this firing.
