The SunRay Cayenne (model 400D3) is a 4-person outdoor far-infrared sauna built from Canadian hemlock, with a sealed weatherproof cabin, a metal composite roof and a glass door flanked by two front windows. Its cabin measures 79" W × 52" D × 87" H under an 89" W × 67" D roof footprint, with 65" W × 48" D × 68" H inside. Ten far-infrared heaters draw 2,400 W and reach 140°F on a dedicated 240 V, 30 A circuit. SunRay lists the Cayenne at 552 lbs, and it is delivered by LTL freight as a kit for assembly on site.
The Cayenne is the 4-person model in SunRay's D3 outdoor infrared series and the only one of the three that runs on 240 V. The 2-person SunRay Burlington (47" × 45", six heaters) and the 3-person SunRay Grandby (69" × 47", seven heaters) are the smaller versions, both on a dedicated 120 V, 20 A outlet. For other sizes and brands, see our outdoor infrared saunas.
How the SunRay Cayenne heats
The Cayenne is heated by far-infrared panels, not a stove, and SunRay gives it a 140°F maximum.
- Ten far-infrared heaters: a combined 2,400 W. SunRay describes them as carbon far-infrared heaters.
- Heat: up to 140°F. The D3 manual SunRay supplies gives a normal setting of 120–140°F and about 8–15 minutes to warm up.
- Control panel: power, a session timer, the thermostat (°F or °C display), the color light, the lights and music, as SunRay's D3 manual describes it. When the cabin hits the set temperature, the heaters turn off and on to keep it there.
- Roof vent: open it when you want fresh air.
- Lighting: recessed interior lighting; the D3 manual adds a reading light and a color therapy light with seven colors.
- Audio: a Bluetooth speaker system, which the manual says can also play music from a USB drive.
- Oxygen ionizer: SunRay describes it as an oxygen ionization system for purifying the air.
- Seating: room for four on one bench, which has a backrest and cup holders.
- Cabin: Canadian hemlock sealed with a weatherproof finish, a metal composite roof, and a glass door with a window on each side.

What electrical connection does the SunRay Cayenne need?
A dedicated 240 V circuit rated for 30 A, the same kind of circuit an electric clothes dryer uses; SunRay's spec sheet lists the supply as 220–240 V. The ten heaters draw 2,400 W, SunRay's D3 manual says no other appliance may share the sauna's outlet, and a licensed electrician runs the circuit and installs the outlet. If your electrical panel has no room for another 240 V breaker, your electrician may need to upgrade it first.
SunRay does not state which 240 V plug the Cayenne uses, so contact us before your electrician fits the outlet and we will confirm the connection with you. Everything inside the cabin is joined by plugs as it is built: the power plugs connect at the bench panel, and the color light, reading light and oxygen ionizer lines pass through the ceiling to their connectors in the roof. Only the supply circuit and its outlet are wired on site, and both should be ready before delivery day.
Where can the SunRay Cayenne be installed?
Outdoors, on a level base. SunRay made the Cayenne for outdoor placement: a sealed weatherproof cabin under a metal composite roof. The D3 manual names a wooden deck, a concrete pad or pavers, and wants a waterproof barrier between the floor and the surface on damp ground or wherever the floor rests on pavers or another ground-contact surface. The site has to take the 89" × 67" roof footprint, which is larger than the 79" × 52" cabin.
Looking after it outdoors
According to SunRay's D3 manual, the weather sealant on the cabin deteriorates with outdoor exposure, and the exterior should be resealed annually or as needed. SunRay's warranty certificate makes annual resealing a requirement for outdoor saunas that ship without a weather cover, and the Cayenne ships without one.
How is the SunRay Cayenne assembled?
From flat-packed panels, by at least 2 adults, in the order SunRay's D3 series install manual gives. The floor is set level first and each wall gets waterproof sealant along its bottom edge; the back wall goes on, then the side walls and the front wall are secured with latches. The vertical bench panel is installed and its power plugs connected, and the bench top is screwed on. The backrest and door handle are fixed with the included screws, the interior ceiling goes in with the accessory lines fed out, and the metal roof is screwed down with sealant between its two panels and along the inside edges of the roof cover. The manual finishes with sealant around the door frame and the joint at the base.
SunRay estimates about two hours for the build and lists a Phillips screwdriver or a drill with a Phillips bit as the tool you need; the sealant work also takes a caulking gun, and SunRay does not say whether the sealant is supplied. The 240 V connection is work for a licensed electrician.
How is the SunRay Cayenne delivered?
The SunRay Cayenne ships by LTL freight, with its panels boxed and strapped to a wooden pallet, and SunRay lists its shipping weight at 552 lbs. Delivery is curbside with a lift gate, which lowers the shipment to the driveway; moving it from there to the base is up to you, so plan the route before the truck arrives.

SunRay publishes a single D3 series install manual for the Cayenne, Grandby and Burlington. It sets out the roof dimensions and wattage of each model, the base and outlet requirements, the assembly steps and the controller, and is worth reading before delivery.

Electrical Requirements
Indoor traditional saunas require a dedicated 240V circuit in order to accommodate the high heat output of the heater. Please reference the product specification sheet to determine the specific requirements for your sauna.
Ventilation Requirements
Indoor traditional saunas are equipped with an air vent in the ceiling. This air vent is designed to help circulate heat throughout the sauna during the heat-up phase and to allow moisture to leave the sauna if you are adding humidity and using it as a steam sauna. The sauna cabin air vent also allows you to lower the sauna temperature without opening the door if the temperature inside the sauna becomes too hot.
Maximum Temperature
SunRay indoor traditional saunas have a maximum operating temperature of 170 degrees Fahrenheit. The normal operating range is 160-170 degrees Fahrenheit.
Traditional Sauna Shipping
All traditional saunas are shipped via truck freight with curbside and lift-gate delivery service unless otherwise specified. SunRay traditional saunas and steam saunas are shipped on a wooden pallet with removable bracing to protect the sauna boxes. Please contact us if you have special requirements for delivery. The trucking company will call you to schedule a delivery appointment.
Sauna Warranty
SunRay home saunas carry a 7-year structural warranty and 1-year parts warranty. All SunRay sauna parts, including electronic parts and the electric heater, are guaranteed for 1 year against defects.
Electrical Connection
Indoor traditional saunas for the home come with a power cord attached to the heater. The power cord does not have a plug. It is designed to be hard-wired into a junction box or you can put a plug on the end of the power cord. Please note that the power requirements differ by sauna model. Consult your traditional sauna user manual for the specific power requirements.
Assembly and Installation
An indoor traditional sauna is easily assembled by two adults. The typical assembly time is 1 hour. No special tools are required for the sauna to be assembled.
Cleaning Your Home Sauna
Your home sauna should be cleaned a minimum of every 3-4 months or more frequently depending on usage. To clean the interior of your home sauna, use a mixture of baking soda and water (3 teaspoons baking soda to 1 gallon of warm water). Using a clean towel, wipe down the interior of the sauna, focusing on where sweat accumulates. Let the area dry with the sauna door open. Use a standard ammonia-based glass cleaner to clean the sauna doors and windows.
Traditional Sauna Origin
SunRay traditional sauna cabins are constructed from Hemlock or Cedar wood imported from Canada. SunRay's manufacturing facility is in China and its distribution facility is in the United States. Warranty claims are handled by SunRay Saunas, based in Richmond, VA, and Topture helps you coordinate them.
Sauna Specification Sheets
Each SunRay sauna has a specification sheet with all the details of the kit, including the power requirements. Contact us if you would like a copy.
Placing an Indoor Sauna Outdoors
SunRay indoor traditional saunas are not rated for outdoor use. They have an open top that is not protected from the elements. If you place the indoor sauna outdoors, it must be covered and protected from the elements. Indoor saunas that are placed outdoors will not be covered under SunRay's sauna warranty.
Sauna Heating Time
The average heating time for traditional home saunas ranges between 30-45 minutes depending on the room temperature, size of the sauna, and the heater type.
Ceiling Clearance
You need at least 3-4 inches between the top of the home sauna and the ceiling. This allows the electrical components on the top of the sauna to receive the appropriate amount of airflow.
Sauna Stones
SunRay indoor traditional saunas come with heater stones that sit on top of the heater elements. The heater stones are used to help radiate heat throughout the sauna and can be used to create humidity inside the sauna. DO NOT pour excess water on the heater stones as it will cause damage to the heater. To create humidity in the sauna, simply drizzle a small amount of water over the stones once they are hot.
Sauna Heater Placement
All indoor traditional saunas are equipped with either a wall mounting bracket or cradle for the heater to sit in. DO NOT place the sauna heater directly on the floor as it could become a fire hazard. The sauna must be elevated off the floor to create airflow through the heating elements.
Sauna Lighting
All indoor traditional saunas come with ambient dome lighting. Saunas with dome lighting can be connected to the heater so that the light turns off when the heater turns off. Alternatively, you can wire the lighting separately on its own switch. Consult your sauna heating wiring guide for instructions on how to wire your sauna light into the heater.
