What Are the Main Types of Infrared Sauna?

Infrared saunas are grouped by which part of the infrared spectrum their emitters produce. There are three labels in common use: far infrared, near infrared, and full spectrum, which combines more than one band in a single cabin. Infrared is simply light at wavelengths longer than visible red — the bands differ in wavelength, and that is what the product labels describe.

The distinction is a specification, not a quality ranking. A far-infrared cabin is not a lesser product than a full-spectrum one; it is a different emitter configuration at a different price.

What Is a Far Infrared Sauna?

A far infrared sauna uses emitters producing the longest infrared wavelengths, delivered through panels built into the cabin walls, floor and bench areas. It is the most common configuration on the market and the one most people mean when they say "infrared sauna".

At Topture, 13 of our 18 infrared cabins are far infrared, and all of them are SunRay models — from the Evansport and Sedona two-person cabins up to four-person models like the Sequoia and Roslyn, plus outdoor-rated units such as the Cayenne.

The practical points that matter when you are buying:

  • Electrical supply. 10 of our 13 far-infrared cabins run on a standard 120V outlet. That is the single biggest installation difference in this category — no electrician, no dedicated circuit.
  • Price. Far infrared is where the range starts, from $2,698.
  • Operating temperature. These cabins run cooler than a traditional stove-and-stone sauna, which is why sessions tend to be longer and why the cabins can be built into finished indoor rooms.
  • Availability of sizes. Our far-infrared range covers one to four people and includes both indoor and outdoor-rated models.

What Is a Near Infrared Sauna?

Topture does not currently stock a dedicated near-infrared sauna. We are covering it here because it comes up constantly when people compare infrared technologies, not because we are selling one.

Near infrared refers to the shortest infrared wavelengths, sitting closest to visible light — which is why near-infrared emitters often glow visibly while far-infrared panels do not. In practice, near infrared is usually delivered by lamp or LED emitters, and it is far more common as a panel or lamp added to a space than as a complete sauna cabin. That is the main reason it is scarce as a standalone product category.

If dedicated near-infrared output is specifically what you want, treat it as a component decision rather than a cabin decision, and be careful reading listings: "near infrared" on a spec sheet can mean anything from a single lamp to a full emitter array.

What Is a Full Spectrum Infrared Sauna?

"Full spectrum" describes a cabin whose emitter system is intended to cover more than one portion of the infrared spectrum rather than far infrared alone. Implementation varies by manufacturer, and the term is not standardised across the industry — which is exactly why it is worth reading the specification rather than the label.

Topture's full-spectrum range is the Finnmark FD series — 5 cabins, from $4,695. Finnmark describes the FD system as pairing Spectrum Plus™ heaters with Spectrum Carbon 360° panels.

We classify these models as full spectrum on the manufacturer's product designation. Finnmark does not publish a wavelength-by-wavelength breakdown for those emitters in the documentation available to us, so we do not publish one either. If you need the exact emitter output before deciding, ask us and we will request the specification from Finnmark rather than estimate it.

Far Infrared vs Full Spectrum: What Actually Changes?

Three things change, and only one of them is about the spectrum.

  • Emitter system. A far-infrared cabin uses one emitter type. A full-spectrum cabin combines more than one, per the manufacturer's design.
  • Price. Our far-infrared cabins start at $2,698; full spectrum starts at $4,695. That gap is the real decision point for most buyers.
  • Installation. Most of our far-infrared cabins run on 120V. The larger full-spectrum models need a 240V circuit, so factor in an electrician.

Capacity and footprint do not reliably differ between the two — both run from compact one- and two-person cabins up to four-person models.

Near Infrared vs Far Infrared: What Actually Changes?

The wavelength band differs, and so does the product form. Far infrared is the basis of essentially every complete infrared sauna cabin sold as such, including all 13 of ours. Near infrared is usually an emitter you add rather than a cabin you buy, which is why comparing "a near infrared sauna" against "a far infrared sauna" often means comparing two different kinds of purchase rather than two versions of the same one.

A Note on Health Claims in This Category

Infrared sauna marketing frequently blends four distinct bodies of evidence as if they were interchangeable: research on traditional sauna bathing, research on infrared light, photobiomodulation research on specific wavelengths under laboratory conditions, and manufacturers' own product claims. They are not the same thing, and a finding from one does not transfer to another.

Which Infrared Types Does Topture Sell?

Topture stocks far infrared and full spectrum saunas. We do not currently carry a dedicated near-infrared sauna. Of 18 infrared cabins in the range, 13 are far infrared — the SunRay cabins — and 5 are full spectrum, which is the Finnmark FD series.

If near infrared specifically is what you are after, we would rather say so than point you at something adjacent. Our full-spectrum cabins use a combination emitter system that the manufacturer describes as pairing Spectrum Plus™ heaters with Spectrum Carbon 360° panels; the manufacturer does not publish a wavelength breakdown for those emitters, so we are not going to claim one on their behalf. Which Type of Infrared Sauna Should You Choose?
