Sauna wood at Topture is ProSaunas lumber for building a sauna room: tongue-and-groove paneling for walls and ceilings, smooth bench wood, and trim, sold by the board in lengths from 1 ft, most up to 10 ft. Choose the species first: Aspen, Thermo-Aspen, Alder and Thermo-Radiata Pine come as paneling, bench wood and trim, so one wood can run through the whole room.

The species sets the room's color and grain and whether the walls, benches and trim can match. The table lists what each wood is sold as here and how ProSaunas describes it.

Choosing sauna wood by look and use

For a light, bright room, aspen, alder, hemlock and spruce keep the walls pale. Thermo-Aspen, Thermo-Spruce and Thermo-Radiata Pine give a darker, warmer room, and Western Red Cedar sits between them in light reddish-brown. Knots are a matter of look: clear boards have none, while select tight knot cedar, spruce, Thermo-Spruce and Thermo-Radiata Pine show them.

A few points from ProSaunas help narrow the choice. It describes aspen and alder as having low heat conductivity, so they stay comfortable to the touch in a hot sauna, and aspen as not secreting resin. It calls Western Red Cedar the traditional North American sauna wood and says it naturally resists decay, rot and insects, and it calls hemlock a good choice for indoor saunas.

Thermally modified sauna wood

Thermo-Aspen, Thermo-Radiata Pine and Thermo-Spruce are thermally modified: ProSaunas treats the wood with heat, steam and pressure and no chemicals, which gives it its darker color. Apart from that treatment the boards are unfinished. The natural species are sold unoiled, and the Aspen Midnight Black boards carry a black finish.

Sauna paneling, bench wood and trim

  • Sauna paneling: tongue-and-groove boards for walls and ceilings, in four profiles from the narrow nickel gap to the broad Grace large gap.
  • Sauna bench wood: boards smooth on four sides with eased edges, which ProSaunas recommends, depending on the board, for benches, backrests, skirts and floors; the 4x4 cedar is for bench legs, supports or a support beam.
  • Sauna trim: inside and outside corners, door trim, T-molding, and 1x1 and 2x2 trim.

A board's name, such as 1x4, is its nominal size. Each product page lists the actual thickness and width, and paneling pages add the face width each board covers once installed: an Aspen 1x4 nickel-gap board measures 0.59″ × 3.54″ and covers 3.15″.

Sauna wood shipping

Sauna wood ships to the contiguous US at one flat freight rate per order, set by the number of boards in the order and the length of the longest board, so a full room of boards costs one freight charge. The rate table is in the Shipping tab on every sauna wood page; boards over 10 ft and orders of 1,000 boards or more are quoted after the order.
