The size in a bench board's name is nominal; the actual measurements are on each product page and differ by wood. An Aspen 2x4 measures 1.1″ × 3.54″ and an Alder 2x6 1.1″ × 5.51″, while a Western Red Cedar 2x4 measures 1.5″ × 3.5″. Plan bench spacing from the actual widths.
ProSaunas mills its bench wood smooth on all four sides and eases the edges, softening them for comfort against bare skin, and recommends it, depending on the board, for sauna benches, backrests, skirts and floors. The square stock carries the load: ProSaunas suggests the 4x4 Western Red Cedar for bench legs, bench supports or a support beam. Cedar 2x4 comes in a clear grade and in select tight knot, which shows defined tight knots and a more pronounced grain.
Benches are the surfaces skin touches most, so the wood's feel in the heat matters. ProSaunas describes aspen and alder as having low heat conductivity, so they stay comfortable to the touch, and aspen as not secreting resin or splintering.
