The SunRay Freeport (model 300D1) is a 3-person outdoor traditional sauna built from aged Canadian hemlock, with a metal composite roof, a front window and a glass-paned door, and a 4.5 kW Harvia electric heater with lava rocks included. It measures 61" W × 51" D × 98" H as a cabin, with a 73" W × 63" D roof footprint, and 57" W × 47" D × 73" H inside. It is a wet/dry sauna: water ladled onto the rocks raises the humidity, and SunRay supplies a wooden bucket and ladle for that. SunRay lists the Freeport at 851 lbs, and it ships by LTL freight as a kit for on-site assembly.
The Freeport is the 3-person model in SunRay's traditional outdoor series. The SunRay Waverly shares the Freeport's 61" × 51" footprint, interior and heater, with two large front windows. For two people, the SunRay Eagle (51" × 51", wooden door) and the SunRay Bristow (50" × 50", glass door and front window) use the same 4.5 kW heater. For other sizes and brands, see our outdoor traditional saunas.
How the SunRay Freeport is built
SunRay builds the Freeport as a sealed, weatherproof cabin for outdoor placement, with the heater, lighting and audio already part of the kit.
- Aged Canadian hemlock cabin: double-paneled walls in tongue-and-groove construction.
- Metal composite roof: it overhangs the cabin to a 73" × 63" footprint.
- 4.5 kW Harvia electric heater: supplied with lava rocks and fitted in a wooden heater frame. SunRay does not name the Harvia model.
- Heat: up to 170°F. SunRay's manual recommends a setting of 125–170°F and allows about 45–60 minutes to warm up.
- 55" bench: a single wide bench, with cup holders.
- Digital keypad: power, a session timer, the thermostat (switchable between °F and °C), the interior light, the color light and Bluetooth music, all from one panel. At the set temperature, the heater cycles on and off to hold it.
- Roof vent: opens for fresh air during a session.
- Chromotherapy lighting and Bluetooth speakers: the color light cycles through seven colors, and any phone connects to the speakers over Bluetooth.
- Accessories: a hygrometer and thermometer, a sand timer, and a wooden bucket and ladle.

The 240 V circuit, its connection and the foundation are not included.

Can you assemble the SunRay Freeport yourself?
The cabin, yes; the 240 V connection, no. SunRay's assembly manual is written for at least two adults, and the only tool it asks for is a Phillips screwdriver or a drill with a Phillips bit. SunRay estimates about two hours for the build. The electrical connection is work for a licensed electrician.
The manual builds the Freeport in this order: the floor panel, the back wall, the two side walls (which slide into their brackets), the front wall, the door handle, then the heater into its wooden frame, where its plug connects to the power box. The bench and accessories follow, then the flat ceiling roof, with the accessory wiring led out through the ceiling, and finally the outer roof.
Before the sauna arrives
- Prepare the base. SunRay's manual calls for a sturdy, level surface such as a concrete pad, a wood deck or pavers, and says the sauna should never sit directly on the ground.
- Have a licensed electrician run a dedicated 240 V, 30 A circuit to the site and decide with you whether to hard-wire the Freeport or fit a plug, since none is supplied.
- Plan how the boxed panels will get from the curb to the base. See Shipping below.
Tools you supply
A Phillips screwdriver or a drill with a Phillips bit, and a second pair of hands.
What electrical service does the SunRay Freeport need?
A dedicated 240 V circuit rated for 30 A, the same kind of circuit an electric clothes dryer uses; SunRay lists it as 220–240 V, 50/60 Hz. The heater draws 4,500 W, and nothing else can share the circuit. If your electrical panel has no room for another 240 V breaker, your electrician may need to upgrade it before delivery.
SunRay does not supply a plug, so the Freeport is either hard-wired or fitted with a plug, and in either case a licensed electrician makes the connection. Everything inside the cabin is plug-in: during assembly the heater plugs into the cabin's power box and the ceiling lights connect through plug-in connectors, so the only site wiring is the supply circuit. SunRay's manual refers to the Harvia heater manual supplied with the sauna for the exact voltage and amperage; give both manuals to your electrician, and contact us before you order if you want us to confirm the requirements with you.
How do you look after the SunRay Freeport outdoors?
Reseal the exterior once a year. SunRay's warranty certificate makes annual resealing a condition of cover for outdoor saunas sold without a weather cover, and the Freeport does not include one. SunRay's warranty also treats surface cracks and minor blemishes in the wood as normal rather than defects.
How is the SunRay Freeport delivered?
The SunRay Freeport ships by LTL freight, with its panels boxed and strapped to a wooden pallet, and SunRay lists its shipping weight at 851 lbs. Delivery is curbside with a lift gate, which lowers the shipment to the driveway; moving it from there to the base is up to you, so plan the route before the truck arrives.
| Freight type | LTL truck; boxed panels on a wooden pallet |
|---|---|
| Delivery point | Curbside, lowered to the driveway by lift gate |
| Shipping weight | 851 lbs (SunRay) |
| Shipping cost | Free within the contiguous US |
| Appointment | Required; someone must be present to inspect and sign |
The carrier will reach out to book the delivery appointment once the shipment reaches their local terminal.
Inspect the shipment before you sign. SunRay's warranty excludes freight damage caused by the carrier, so note any visible damage on the delivery receipt, photograph it, and contact us before you start assembly. SunRay's delivery policy asks for internal damage found after unpacking to be reported within 3 business days of delivery.
SunRay's assembly manual for its traditional outdoor series covers the Freeport's parts, build sequence, heater connection, keypad and operation, so your electrician can review it before delivery. Its roof pages still show the series' earlier shingled roof; the Freeport now ships with a metal composite roof. The Harvia heater's own manual, with the heater's electrical data, ships with the sauna.

Electrical Requirements
Indoor traditional saunas require a dedicated 240V circuit in order to accommodate the high heat output of the heater. Please reference the product specification sheet to determine the specific requirements for your sauna.
Ventilation Requirements
Indoor traditional saunas are equipped with an air vent in the ceiling. This air vent is designed to help circulate heat throughout the sauna during the heat-up phase and to allow moisture to leave the sauna if you are adding humidity and using it as a steam sauna. The sauna cabin air vent also allows you to lower the sauna temperature without opening the door if the temperature inside the sauna becomes too hot.
Maximum Temperature
SunRay indoor traditional saunas have a maximum operating temperature of 170 degrees Fahrenheit. The normal operating range is 160-170 degrees Fahrenheit.
Traditional Sauna Shipping
All traditional saunas are shipped via truck freight with curbside and lift-gate delivery service unless otherwise specified. SunRay traditional saunas and steam saunas are shipped on a wooden pallet with removable bracing to protect the sauna boxes. Please contact us if you have special requirements for delivery. The trucking company will call you to schedule a delivery appointment.
Sauna Warranty
SunRay home saunas carry a 7-year structural warranty and 1-year parts warranty. All SunRay sauna parts, including electronic parts and the electric heater, are guaranteed for 1 year against defects.
Electrical Connection
Indoor traditional saunas for the home come with a power cord attached to the heater. The power cord does not have a plug. It is designed to be hard-wired into a junction box or you can put a plug on the end of the power cord. Please note that the power requirements differ by sauna model. Consult your traditional sauna user manual for the specific power requirements.
Assembly and Installation
An indoor traditional sauna is easily assembled by two adults. The typical assembly time is 1 hour. No special tools are required for the sauna to be assembled.
Cleaning Your Home Sauna
Your home sauna should be cleaned a minimum of every 3-4 months or more frequently depending on usage. To clean the interior of your home sauna, use a mixture of baking soda and water (3 teaspoons baking soda to 1 gallon of warm water). Using a clean towel, wipe down the interior of the sauna, focusing on where sweat accumulates. Let the area dry with the sauna door open. Use a standard ammonia-based glass cleaner to clean the sauna doors and windows.
Traditional Sauna Origin
SunRay traditional sauna cabins are constructed from Hemlock or Cedar wood imported from Canada. SunRay's manufacturing facility is in China and its distribution facility is in the United States. Warranty claims are handled by SunRay Saunas, based in Richmond, VA, and Topture helps you coordinate them.
Sauna Specification Sheets
Each SunRay sauna has a specification sheet with all the details of the kit, including the power requirements. Contact us if you would like a copy.
Placing an Indoor Sauna Outdoors
SunRay indoor traditional saunas are not rated for outdoor use. They have an open top that is not protected from the elements. If you place the indoor sauna outdoors, it must be covered and protected from the elements. Indoor saunas that are placed outdoors will not be covered under SunRay's sauna warranty.
Sauna Heating Time
The average heating time for traditional home saunas ranges between 30-45 minutes depending on the room temperature, size of the sauna, and the heater type.
Ceiling Clearance
You need at least 3-4 inches between the top of the home sauna and the ceiling. This allows the electrical components on the top of the sauna to receive the appropriate amount of airflow.
Sauna Stones
SunRay indoor traditional saunas come with heater stones that sit on top of the heater elements. The heater stones are used to help radiate heat throughout the sauna and can be used to create humidity inside the sauna. DO NOT pour excess water on the heater stones as it will cause damage to the heater. To create humidity in the sauna, simply drizzle a small amount of water over the stones once they are hot.
Sauna Heater Placement
All indoor traditional saunas are equipped with either a wall mounting bracket or cradle for the heater to sit in. DO NOT place the sauna heater directly on the floor as it could become a fire hazard. The sauna must be elevated off the floor to create airflow through the heating elements.
Sauna Lighting
All indoor traditional saunas come with ambient dome lighting. Saunas with dome lighting can be connected to the heater so that the light turns off when the heater turns off. Alternatively, you can wire the lighting separately on its own switch. Consult your sauna heating wiring guide for instructions on how to wire your sauna light into the heater.
