The SunRay Bristow (model 200D2) is a 2-person outdoor traditional sauna built from aged Canadian hemlock, with a metal roof, a glass door beside a front window, and a 4.5 kW Harvia electric heater with lava rocks included. The cabin is 50" W × 50" D × 98" H, the roof covers a 61" × 61" footprint, and the room inside is 45" W × 45" D × 73" H. It is a wet/dry sauna: ladling water onto the rocks raises the humidity, and SunRay includes a wooden bucket and ladle for that. SunRay lists the Bristow at 721 lbs, and it ships by LTL freight as a kit you assemble on site.
The Bristow and the SunRay Eagle are the two 2-person models in SunRay's traditional outdoor series manual. The Eagle has the same 61" × 61" roof footprint, 45" × 45" interior and 4.5 kW heater in a 51" × 51" cabin, with a wooden door where the Bristow has a glass door and a front window. For three people, the SunRay Waverly pairs a glass door with two large front windows in a 61" × 51" cabin, and the SunRay Freeport is the same size with a front window and a glass-enclosed door; both use the same heater. For other sizes and brands, see our outdoor traditional saunas.
How the SunRay Bristow is built
The Bristow is a sealed hemlock cabin made to stand outdoors, with the heater, keypad, lights and speakers supplied as part of the kit.
- Hemlock walls: aged Canadian hemlock in double-paneled, tongue-and-groove walls.
- Metal roof: a hip roof that overhangs the 50" × 50" cabin to a 61" × 61" footprint.
- Glass door and front window: the window sits beside the door on the front wall, and SunRay says it adds light inside.
- 4.5 kW Harvia electric heater: supplied with lava rocks and set in a wooden heater frame. SunRay does not name the Harvia model.
- Temperature: SunRay rates the Bristow to 170°F; its manual suggests setting 125–170°F and allowing about 45–60 minutes for the room to warm up.
- Bench: 44" wide, with a backrest and cup holders.
- Keypad: a digital panel for power, a session timer, the thermostat (°F or °C), the interior light, the color light and Bluetooth music. The heater cycles on and off to hold the temperature you set.
- Ventilation: a ceiling vent you can open for fresh air.
- Lighting and audio: an interior light, chromotherapy lighting in seven colors and a Bluetooth speaker system.
- Accessories: a hygrometer and thermometer, a sand timer, and a wooden bucket and ladle.

Can you assemble the SunRay Bristow yourself?
The cabin, yes; the 240 V connection, no. SunRay's assembly manual asks for at least two adults. The only tool SunRay lists is a Phillips screwdriver or a drill with a Phillips bit, and SunRay puts the build at about two hours. A licensed electrician handles the electrical connection.
In the manual's sequence, the floor panel goes down first, then the back wall, the two side walls on slide brackets, the front wall with the door and window, and the door handle. The heater is set into its wooden frame and plugged into the power box inside the cabin. Next come the bench (it slides into channels in the side walls), the backrest and the accessories, then the flat ceiling, with the accessory wiring led out through it and connected by plug-in connectors, and finally the outer roof.
Before the sauna arrives
- Get the base ready. SunRay's manual asks for a sturdy, level surface such as a concrete pad, a wood deck or pavers, never bare ground, with a floor separator or moisture barrier if the ground is damp.
- Book a licensed electrician to run a dedicated 240 V, 30 A circuit to the spot. SunRay does not say whether the Bristow is hard-wired or plugged in, so check the connection with us before the electrician starts.
- Work out how the boxed panels will travel from the curb to the base. See Shipping below.
Tools you supply
A Phillips screwdriver or a drill with a Phillips bit, plus a second adult.
What electrical service does the SunRay Bristow need?
A dedicated 240 V circuit rated for 30 A, the same kind of circuit an electric clothes dryer uses; SunRay lists it as 220–240 V, 50/60 Hz. The 4.5 kW heater draws 4,500 W, and the circuit must serve the sauna alone. If your electrical panel has no room for another 240 V breaker, your electrician may need to upgrade it before delivery.
Your electrician brings the circuit to the sauna and makes the final connection. SunRay does not specify hard-wiring or a plug for the Bristow, so contact us before the circuit is installed and we will confirm it with you. The in-cabin wiring is plug-in: during assembly the heater plugs into the cabin's power box and the ceiling accessories connect through plug-in connectors, so the supply circuit is the only wiring done on site. For the heater's exact voltage and amperage, SunRay's manual points to the Harvia heater manual that comes with the sauna; hand both manuals to your electrician.
How do you look after the SunRay Bristow outdoors?
Reseal the outside of the cabin once a year. SunRay's warranty certificate requires annual resealing for outdoor saunas sold without a weather cover, and SunRay lists no weather cover with the Bristow. The certificate also counts surface cracks and minor blemishes in the wood as normal rather than as defects.
How is the SunRay Bristow delivered?
The SunRay Bristow travels by LTL freight, its panels boxed and strapped to a wooden pallet, at a SunRay-listed shipping weight of 721 lbs. Delivery is curbside: a lift gate lowers the shipment to the driveway, and getting it from there to the base is your job, so plan the route before the truck comes.
| Freight type | LTL truck; boxed panels on a wooden pallet |
|---|---|
| Delivery point | Curbside, lowered to the driveway by lift gate |
| Shipping weight | 721 lbs (SunRay) |
| Shipping cost | Free within the contiguous US |
| Appointment | Required; someone must be present to inspect and sign |
The carrier will reach out to book the delivery appointment once the shipment reaches their local terminal.
Inspect the shipment before you sign. SunRay's warranty excludes freight damage caused by the carrier, so note any visible damage on the delivery receipt, photograph it, and contact us before you start assembly. SunRay's delivery policy asks for internal damage found after unpacking to be reported within 3 business days of delivery.
SunRay's traditional outdoor series assembly manual covers the Bristow's parts, the build sequence, the heater connection, the keypad and day-to-day operation, so your electrician can read it before delivery. Its roof pages still show the series' earlier shingled roof; the Bristow now ships with a metal roof. The Harvia heater's own manual, which carries the heater's electrical data, comes with the sauna.

Electrical Requirements
Indoor traditional saunas require a dedicated 240V circuit in order to accommodate the high heat output of the heater. Please reference the product specification sheet to determine the specific requirements for your sauna.
Ventilation Requirements
Indoor traditional saunas are equipped with an air vent in the ceiling. This air vent is designed to help circulate heat throughout the sauna during the heat-up phase and to allow moisture to leave the sauna if you are adding humidity and using it as a steam sauna. The sauna cabin air vent also allows you to lower the sauna temperature without opening the door if the temperature inside the sauna becomes too hot.
Maximum Temperature
SunRay indoor traditional saunas have a maximum operating temperature of 170 degrees Fahrenheit. The normal operating range is 160-170 degrees Fahrenheit.
Traditional Sauna Shipping
All traditional saunas are shipped via truck freight with curbside and lift-gate delivery service unless otherwise specified. SunRay traditional saunas and steam saunas are shipped on a wooden pallet with removable bracing to protect the sauna boxes. Please contact us if you have special requirements for delivery. The trucking company will call you to schedule a delivery appointment.
Sauna Warranty
SunRay home saunas carry a 7-year structural warranty and 1-year parts warranty. All SunRay sauna parts, including electronic parts and the electric heater, are guaranteed for 1 year against defects.
Electrical Connection
Indoor traditional saunas for the home come with a power cord attached to the heater. The power cord does not have a plug. It is designed to be hard-wired into a junction box or you can put a plug on the end of the power cord. Please note that the power requirements differ by sauna model. Consult your traditional sauna user manual for the specific power requirements.
Assembly and Installation
An indoor traditional sauna is easily assembled by two adults. The typical assembly time is 1 hour. No special tools are required for the sauna to be assembled.
Cleaning Your Home Sauna
Your home sauna should be cleaned a minimum of every 3-4 months or more frequently depending on usage. To clean the interior of your home sauna, use a mixture of baking soda and water (3 teaspoons baking soda to 1 gallon of warm water). Using a clean towel, wipe down the interior of the sauna, focusing on where sweat accumulates. Let the area dry with the sauna door open. Use a standard ammonia-based glass cleaner to clean the sauna doors and windows.
Traditional Sauna Origin
SunRay traditional sauna cabins are constructed from Hemlock or Cedar wood imported from Canada. SunRay's manufacturing facility is in China and its distribution facility is in the United States. Warranty claims are handled by SunRay Saunas, based in Richmond, VA, and Topture helps you coordinate them.
Sauna Specification Sheets
Each SunRay sauna has a specification sheet with all the details of the kit, including the power requirements. Contact us if you would like a copy.
Placing an Indoor Sauna Outdoors
SunRay indoor traditional saunas are not rated for outdoor use. They have an open top that is not protected from the elements. If you place the indoor sauna outdoors, it must be covered and protected from the elements. Indoor saunas that are placed outdoors will not be covered under SunRay's sauna warranty.
Sauna Heating Time
The average heating time for traditional home saunas ranges between 30-45 minutes depending on the room temperature, size of the sauna, and the heater type.
Ceiling Clearance
You need at least 3-4 inches between the top of the home sauna and the ceiling. This allows the electrical components on the top of the sauna to receive the appropriate amount of airflow.
Sauna Stones
SunRay indoor traditional saunas come with heater stones that sit on top of the heater elements. The heater stones are used to help radiate heat throughout the sauna and can be used to create humidity inside the sauna. DO NOT pour excess water on the heater stones as it will cause damage to the heater. To create humidity in the sauna, simply drizzle a small amount of water over the stones once they are hot.
Sauna Heater Placement
All indoor traditional saunas are equipped with either a wall mounting bracket or cradle for the heater to sit in. DO NOT place the sauna heater directly on the floor as it could become a fire hazard. The sauna must be elevated off the floor to create airflow through the heating elements.
Sauna Lighting
All indoor traditional saunas come with ambient dome lighting. Saunas with dome lighting can be connected to the heater so that the light turns off when the heater turns off. Alternatively, you can wire the lighting separately on its own switch. Consult your sauna heating wiring guide for instructions on how to wire your sauna light into the heater.
