All traditional sauna heaters use rocks. The rocks absorb heat from the elements (electric) or firebox (wood-burning), store it, and radiate it evenly throughout the room. Pour water over them and you get loyly — the Finnish word for the burst of steam that defines the traditional sauna experience.
The two main categories come down to fuel source. Electric sauna heaters run on 240V power, heat in 30–60 minutes, and give you precise temperature control via a digital controller or built-in dial. Wood-burning sauna stoves need no electrical connection — just a chimney and firewood — and they're the go-to for off-grid builds, outdoor saunas, or anyone who wants the ritual of building a fire before each session.
Within electric heaters, you'll find wall-mounted models for smaller rooms (under 350 cu ft) and floor-standing models for larger spaces. Wall-mounted heaters like the Harvia KIP or HUUM Drop save floor space and keep the stone cage at bench height. Floor models like the HUUM HIVE or Harvia Cilindro hold significantly more stone mass — which means more heat storage and better steam.
Measure your sauna's interior length, width, and height in feet, then multiply all three. A 5' x 6' x 7' room is 210 cu ft. That number determines the kW rating you need — every heater on this page lists its recommended room size range. For example, a Harvia KIP 4.5kW covers rooms from 100 to 210 cu ft, while a HUUM HIVE 12kW handles 424 to 883 cu ft.
Stone capacity is one of the most overlooked specs. More rocks mean more thermal mass — the heater stores more heat and recovers faster after you throw water. The HUUM Drop holds 121 lbs of stones, which is generous for a wall-mounted heater. The HUUM HIVE Mini holds 330 lbs in a floor-standing cage, and the full-size HUUM HIVE goes up to 595 lbs — producing dense, enveloping steam that serious sauna users describe as "a warm misty hug." On the Harvia side, the Cilindro Half Series holds 200 lbs in its half-cylinder design, while the compact KIP carries 50 lbs — enough for moderate loyly in a smaller room.
Some heaters include built-in controls (a dial or digital panel on the unit itself), so you don't need a separate controller. The Harvia KIP with built-in controls and Harvia The Wall are both in this category. Most HUUM and Saunum heaters require a separate controller — the HUUM UKU or WiFi-enabled models let you preheat your sauna from your phone. Saunum's AirIQ controller adds WiFi control plus integration with their climate equalizer system.
Wall-mounted heaters bolt to the wall and sit above floor level — simpler installation, smaller footprint, ideal for rooms under 350 cu ft. Floor-standing heaters rest on the floor (some with optional wall brackets) and tend to have higher stone capacity. Both types require a dedicated 240V electrical circuit installed by a licensed electrician. Always consult a licensed electrician before any electrical work — requirements vary by local code and jurisdiction.
Harvia is the reliable workhorse of the sauna heater world. Finnish-made, proven track record, and the broadest selection we carry — from the budget-friendly KIP series starting at $801 to the commercial-grade Virta Pro at $3,736. Harvia heaters max out at 194°F, use straightforward controls, and have fewer reported issues than most competitors. If you want something that works without fuss for years, Harvia's where to start. Their wood-burning Legend series holds up to 573 lbs of stones and produces some of the best loyly available from a stove.
HUUM is the design-forward choice. Estonian-made heaters with sculptural shapes (the Drop, HIVE, CLIFF, and STEEL lines) that look as good as they perform. HUUM heaters reach 230°F and carry substantially more stone mass per kW than Harvia — the HIVE series is essentially a cage of rocks with a heater inside, not the other way around. The trade-off: they cost more and heat up slower (45–60 minutes vs. Harvia's 30–45), and some owners have reported element failures within the first couple of years. We carry them because the steam quality is genuinely exceptional — just go in with realistic expectations.
Saunum takes a different approach entirely. These Estonian heaters have a patented air-mixing system built in — a quiet fan blends hot air from the ceiling with cooler air near the floor, eliminating the "hot head, cold feet" problem that's common in traditional saunas. They also include a reservoir for Himalayan salt balls and WiFi control standard. Saunum heaters reach 212°F and hold 154–198 lbs of stones. They're the most expensive option, but if even heat distribution is a priority, nothing else we've tested does it as well.
Electric heaters ship as the heater unit only. You'll need to add sauna rocks (always use the stones recommended by the manufacturer — wrong stones can crack and damage the heater), a compatible controller if the heater doesn't have one built in, and a dedicated 240V electrical circuit installed by a licensed electrician. We carry complete heater packages that bundle the heater, stones, and controller together at the same price as buying them separately — it's purely a convenience option.
Wood-burning stoves ship as the stove unit and require sauna stones, a chimney kit sized for your installation (interior feed or through-the-wall), and a heat shield or floor protection underneath. Each stove's product page lists compatible chimney configurations and guard rails for safety clearances.
Most orders ship free. Heaters typically arrive in 1–3 business days from our Chicago warehouse. Financing is available at checkout through Shop Pay — a $2,500 heater works out to around $104/month over 24 months at 0% APR.
