HUUM sauna heaters by room size and output

HUUM sizes its heaters to the sauna room's volume and prints a smallest and largest room for them in its US manuals, so the room decides which HUUM heater fits before the kW figure does. Set your room's volume against HUUM's ranges, which for the electric heaters are its ratings on a 240 V supply (HUUM rates the CLIFF and STEEL, Minis included, separately for 208 V):

• Uninsulated brick, tile or glass walls: for a CLIFF, STEEL or HIVE heater (Minis included) or a HIVE Flow stove, add 3.3 cubic feet to the room's volume for each square foot of such wall before you choose, as HUUM's manuals for those lines direct; for a DROP or a HIVE Wood, see the product page or ask Topture's Lifetime Expert Support.
• Under 177 cubic feet: start with a 3.5 kW CLIFF Mini or STEEL Mini, which HUUM sizes for 106–177 cubic feet, or the DROP's 4.5 kW model, sized for 106–248; rule out the wood stoves here, which HUUM sizes from 212 cubic feet up. Below 106 cubic feet, no HUUM heater here is sized for the room.
• About 177 to 318 cubic feet: start with a 6 kW model: the DROP, CLIFF, STEEL and HIVE Mini each come in one that HUUM sizes for 177–318 cubic feet.
• About 283 to 460 cubic feet: choose a 9 kW DROP, CLIFF, STEEL or HIVE Mini, each sized for 283–460 cubic feet; below 389 cubic feet the DROP's 7.5 kW model, sized from 248, also fits.
• About 354 to 566 cubic feet: choose the CLIFF 11, STEEL 11 or HIVE Mini 11, which HUUM sizes for 354–566 cubic feet; each is also sold here as a package.
• Over 566 cubic feet, electric: choose the HIVE, which HUUM sizes at 424–636 cubic feet for the HIVE 12, 530–813 for the HIVE 15 and 636–989 for the HIVE 18; rule out the DROP, CLIFF, STEEL and HIVE Mini, whose ranges end at 460 or 566 cubic feet.
• Wood heat, from 212 to 635 cubic feet: HUUM sizes the HIVE Flow Mini for 212–494 cubic feet and the HIVE Flow for 282–635, and the HIVE Wood stove's 13 and 17 kW models for 212–459 and 283–565, so choose the stove whose range holds your room.

Electric or wood-burning HUUM heaters: supply, control, steam and loading

HUUM lists every electric heater here for a 240 V supply, and its US manuals also rate the CLIFF and STEEL lines, Minis included, for 208 V. On 240 V, HUUM's manuals list the electric models from 14.58 amps for the 3.5 kW models to 75 amps for the HIVE 18, and HUUM's control manual says only a licensed electrician may do the electrical work it describes. Your licensed electrician sizes the breaker and wire from the manual that ships with the heater and your local code.

Every HUUM electric heater here needs a separate control: HUUM's manuals give these heaters no built-in one. HUUM's UKU control runs heaters up to 11 kW on its own, and for those heaters HUUM's manuals also allow another certified sauna-heater control whose rated output covers the heater. The HIVE 12, 15 and 18 need HUUM's UKU Extension Box with the UKU, and their packages include it. HUUM's control options have their own page, HUUM sauna controllers.

HUUM's manuals for its electric heaters have you ladle water onto the hot stones for steam. HUUM's DROP and HIVE manuals call for only clean, warm water, about 2 3/4 oz (80 ml) at a time, poured only on the stones and not on metal surfaces, and only once the stones are fully heated. HUUM's CLIFF and STEEL manuals allow only tap water for making steam and never a water hose. For the wood-burning HIVE Wood, HUUM's manual says the stove is intended for dry or wet sauna steam.

• Control from your phone: pair a HUUM electric heater with a UKU Wi-Fi, which HUUM's manuals let you run from the HUUM mobile app as well as from its panel, on a 2.4 GHz network only; rule out the UKU Local, which is run from its wall panel only, with no app.
• No electrical connection at the sauna: choose a wood-burning stove; HUUM describes the HIVE Wood as a choice for saunas without access to electrical connections, and its manuals have the HIVE Wood heated with wood logs only and the HIVE Flow with firewood only.
• Fire loaded from inside the sauna: choose the HIVE Flow, the HIVE Flow Mini or the HIVE Wood 13 or 17, which HUUM's manuals have loaded from inside the sauna room.
• Fire loaded from the next room: choose an LS stove, the HIVE Flow LS, HIVE Flow Mini LS or HIVE Wood 17 LS, which HUUM's manuals install through a non-combustible wall so the fire is loaded from the next room.
• Chimney route for a wood stove: HUUM's manuals list no chimney in the box, so pick one of HUUM's chimney kits by the way out of the sauna: through the ceiling, through a barrel sauna's roof, or through the wall with a top or back connection. HUUM's HIVE Flow manual also allows a HIVE Flow to join an existing flue system that already has a fireplace, on conditions the manual sets. HUUM lists the back-connection kit for the HIVE Flow, whose flue can leave from the top or the back, while the HIVE Wood's outlet is on top only; HUUM's manuals leave the connection to a specialist or certified installation expert.

A HUUM heater alone or with its control and stones

HUUM's manuals list no sauna stones in the box for these heaters and stoves, and say each one needs them. Among the heaters sold alone, the DROP listing sits toward the lower end here, from $1,334; the packages start from $2,716 for the DROP 4.5 kW package, and the HIVE 18 kW package, from $6,471, is the highest-priced listing here.

• Heater, UKU control and stones as one item: choose one of the electric HUUM sauna heater packages; each combines the heater, a HUUM UKU control (UKU Local Black, or UKU Wi-Fi with a Black, Glass or Mirror panel) and HUUM stones.
• A wood stove with its stones and chimney kit: choose a wood package, which combines the stove, HUUM stones and the HUUM chimney kit chosen with it; all but the HIVE Wood 17 LS package add a HUUM protective bed, which goes under the stove and adds safety on a floor of wood or other combustible material. Extension pipes are left out of the HIVE Wood packages, and the floor protection in front of the firebox door also out of the HIVE Wood 17 LS one. The HIVE Flow packages leave out the floor plate HUUM requires in front of the door on a combustible floor, and the LS ones also the mounting collar.
• A control already bought, or one the packages do not list: choose the heater alone; its product page offers HUUM stones, the UKU controls for an electric heater and, on most electric lines, a safety rail and embedding flange, and sauna stones ordered with a heater ship free within the contiguous United States.
