What is the Harvia Cilindro 20 wood-burning sauna stove?

The Harvia Cilindro 20 (WKPC20S) is a 17 kW wood-burning pillar stove for sauna rooms of 283–706 cu ft. Its stainless-steel outer shell holds 264 lb (120 kg) of 4–6" stones in a round grid around the fire chamber, with a glass door below. It stands on the floor and connects to the chimney at the top or the rear through a 4.5" (115 mm) opening. It burns firewood and needs no electrical connection; Harvia's data sheet says it is designed and crafted in Muurame, Finland.

Does the Harvia Cilindro 20 fit my sauna?

The Harvia Cilindro 20 heats sauna rooms of 283–706 cu ft (8–20 m³). Harvia's manual adds 1.2 m³ for every square meter of uninsulated brick, glass block, glass, concrete or tile wall, about 3.9 cu ft per sq ft, and a glass door counts: its example is a 10 m³ room with a glass door, which needs the output of a 12 m³ room. Multiply the volume of a solid-log sauna by 1.5. Harvia's data sheet gives a minimum sauna room height of 74.8" (1,900 mm), and the top of the stove needs at least 39.4" (1,000 mm) to the ceiling.

How is the Harvia Cilindro 20 installed?

The Harvia Cilindro 20 stands on a non-combustible base or floor strong enough to carry it and its stones, inside the safety distances below, and connects to a T600 chimney. Harvia's manual says all local regulations apply, that a wood-burning heater cannot use a shared flue, and that the local fire authority that approves the installation can give guidance on fire-safety regulations. Harvia's installation manual, under Documents, gives the step-by-step installation and the chimney connection.

Does the Harvia Cilindro 20 need floor protection?

It depends on the floor under the Harvia Cilindro 20. A bare concrete floor at least 2.4" (60 mm) thick needs no protection. A tiled floor needs Harvia's round WL120 protection base or similar heat-radiation protection, because tile adhesives, grout and waterproofing do not resist the stove's heat. A floor made of combustible material needs the WL120 too, plus a spark protector on the floor in front of the door. The Harvia WL120 round protective bedding is sold separately; it does not come with the stove.

Connecting the Harvia Cilindro 20 to a chimney

The Harvia Cilindro 20 connects at the top or the rear through a 4.5" (115 mm) opening, to a chimney of temperature class T600 with a flue at least 4.3" (110 mm) across; it cannot share a flue with another fireplace. The Harvia WHP1500 chimney kit (sold separately) fits the top opening, and its page gives the roof and clearance requirements. For North American 6" chimney pipe, the Harvia WZ115155 pipe adapter (sold separately) adapts the opening.

Does the Harvia Cilindro 20 need a first firing?

Yes, outdoors. Harvia's manual says the Harvia Cilindro 20 must be heated once outdoors before it is used in a sauna, until the protective paint stops smoking; the stones are not needed for this firing. If an outdoor firing is impossible, the manual allows starting at installation, with more smoke in the sauna.

Pile them so they cover the stove body: Harvia's safety distances assume it, and an uncovered stove body radiates heat that can overheat nearby structures even outside those distances. Rinse the stone dust off first, and do not pack them so tightly that air cannot circulate between them. Rearrange the stones at least once a year and replace any that have broken down, and have the chimney and connection pipes swept regularly. Stones smaller than 4 in, or broken pieces, keep the stones from heating properly.
