The SunRay Aurora (model 300SH) is a 2–4-person traditional barrel sauna built from Western red cedar, with a shingled roof, a glass door and a 6 kW Harvia electric heater with stones included. It measures 72" W × 61" D × 76" H outside and 69" W × 51" D × 69" H inside, and rests on support cradles. It is a wet/dry sauna: water ladled onto the stones raises the humidity, and a wooden bucket and ladle come with it. SunRay lists it for outdoor or indoor use and gives its weight as 721 lbs; it ships by LTL freight as a kit for on-site assembly.
The Aurora is the mid-size model in SunRay's barrel sauna range. The 2-person SunRay Solace is shorter, at 49" deep with a 39"-deep interior, and the 4-person SunRay Galley is longer, at 72" deep with a 64"-deep interior. The SunRay Oasis has the Aurora's 69" × 51" interior and adds a canopy over the entrance, with an exterior bench on each side of the door, and is 72" deep overall. For other sizes and brands, see our barrel saunas.
How the SunRay Aurora is built
SunRay builds the Aurora from Western red cedar staves in ball-and-socket construction, closed into a barrel by metal bands, with the heater, lighting and accessories part of the kit.
- Western red cedar: ball-and-socket construction from 1-3/8" lumber, with stainless steel hardware.
- Metal bands: they run around the barrel and are tightened with latch bolts during assembly.
- Support cradles: the barrel rests on them, and SunRay lists them as weather-resistant. A flat floor kit is included.
- Shingled roof: shingle tiles screwed onto the outside of the barrel during assembly.
- 6 kW Harvia electric heater: supplied with stones and fitted in a wooden heater frame. SunRay does not name the Harvia model.
- Heat: up to 170°F, as SunRay lists it. The heater's controls are covered in the Harvia heater's own manual, which ships with the sauna.
- Benches and backrests: SunRay rates the Aurora for 2 to 4 people, with room to stretch out when fewer use it.
- Glass door: between two small front windows; SunRay lists the glass as tempered.
- Interior dome light: wired to the heater during assembly, so it needs no circuit of its own.
- Accessories: a thermometer and hygrometer, a sand timer, and a wooden bucket and ladle.

Can you assemble the SunRay Aurora yourself?
The barrel, yes; the 240 V connection, no. SunRay's assembly manual says the build needs at least 2–3 adults, and SunRay says the only tool needed is a Phillips screwdriver or a drill with a Phillips bit. SunRay estimates about two hours for the build. The electrical connection is work for a licensed electrician.
The manual builds the Aurora from the base up. The support cradles go on the level base with a metal band laid over each, then the floor section and its slats, the back wall sections (screwed together), the front wall the same way with the roof's middle strip, and the remaining side staves, with every third or fourth one screwed to the frame through factory-drilled holes. The metal bands are then closed around the barrel and tightened with their latch bolts. The inner floor and the bench supports, benches and backrests go in next, then the shingle tiles are screwed onto the outside, the door handle is fitted, the heater's wooden frame is assembled and the accessories are screwed on. Last, the dome light goes on the back wall, with its wire run around the edge of the cabin in the included clips and connected to the heater following the electrical instructions.
Before the sauna arrives
- Prepare the base. SunRay's manual calls for a sturdy, level surface such as a concrete pad, a wood deck or patio pavers, says the sauna should never sit directly on the ground, and calls for a floor separator or moisture barrier where the floor is damp.
- Have a licensed electrician run a dedicated 240 V, 30 A circuit to the site, after we have confirmed the connection type with you (see below).
- Plan how the boxed parts will get from the curb to the base. See Shipping below.
Tools you supply
A Phillips screwdriver or a drill with a Phillips bit. SunRay's manual calls for at least 2–3 adults for the build.
What electrical service does the SunRay Aurora need?
A dedicated 240 V circuit rated for 30 A, the same kind of circuit an electric clothes dryer uses; SunRay lists it as 220–240 V, 50/60 Hz. The heater draws 6,000 W, and nothing else can share the circuit. If your electrical panel has no room for another 240 V breaker, your electrician may need to upgrade it before delivery.
SunRay does not say whether the Aurora is hard-wired or fitted with a plug, so contact us before your electrician starts and we will confirm the connection with you; either way, a licensed electrician makes it. The dome light needs no circuit of its own: SunRay's manual has its wire connected to the heater, so the supply circuit is the only site wiring. The manual refers to the Harvia heater's own manual, which comes with the sauna, for the exact voltage and amperage; give both manuals to your electrician.
Where can the SunRay Aurora be installed?
Outdoors or indoors: SunRay lists the Aurora for either. The base rules are the same in both places. SunRay's manual calls for a sturdy, level surface such as a concrete pad, a wood deck or patio pavers, never the bare ground, and a floor separator or moisture barrier where the floor is damp. The barrel stands on its support cradles; plan the base for the full 72" × 61" exterior. SunRay publishes no clearance figures, so ask us to check the space before you order an indoor installation.
How do you look after the SunRay Aurora outdoors?
Reseal the exterior once a year. SunRay's warranty certificate makes annual resealing a condition of cover for outdoor saunas sold without a weather cover, and SunRay lists none with the Aurora. SunRay's warranty also treats surface cracks and minor blemishes in the wood as normal rather than defects.
How is the SunRay Aurora delivered?
The SunRay Aurora ships by LTL freight, with its parts boxed and strapped to a wooden pallet, and SunRay lists its shipping weight at 721 lbs. Delivery is curbside with a lift gate, which lowers the shipment to the driveway; moving it from there to the base is up to you, so plan the route before the truck arrives.
| Freight type | LTL truck; boxed parts on a wooden pallet |
|---|---|
| Delivery point | Curbside, lowered to the driveway by lift gate |
| Shipping weight | 721 lbs (SunRay) |
| Shipping cost | Free within the contiguous US |
| Appointment | Required; someone must be present to inspect and sign |
The carrier will reach out to book the delivery appointment once the shipment reaches their local terminal.
Inspect the shipment before you sign. SunRay's warranty excludes freight damage caused by the carrier, so note any visible damage on the delivery receipt, photograph it, and contact us before you start assembly. SunRay's delivery policy asks for internal damage found after unpacking to be reported within 3 business days of delivery.
SunRay's assembly manual for its barrel saunas covers the Aurora, the Solace, the Galley and the Oasis: the parts, the build sequence, the dome-light wiring and SunRay's safety notes, so your electrician can review it before delivery. For the heater's electrical data and operation it refers to the Harvia heater's own manual, which ships with the sauna. Its use and safety pages mention infrared heater elements, wording carried over from SunRay's infrared manuals, so follow the Harvia manual for running the heater.

Electrical Requirements
Indoor traditional saunas require a dedicated 240V circuit in order to accommodate the high heat output of the heater. Please reference the product specification sheet to determine the specific requirements for your sauna.
Ventilation Requirements
Indoor traditional saunas are equipped with an air vent in the ceiling. This air vent is designed to help circulate heat throughout the sauna during the heat-up phase and to allow moisture to leave the sauna if you are adding humidity and using it as a steam sauna. The sauna cabin air vent also allows you to lower the sauna temperature without opening the door if the temperature inside the sauna becomes too hot.
Maximum Temperature
SunRay indoor traditional saunas have a maximum operating temperature of 170 degrees Fahrenheit. The normal operating range is 160-170 degrees Fahrenheit.
Traditional Sauna Shipping
All traditional saunas are shipped via truck freight with curbside and lift-gate delivery service unless otherwise specified. SunRay traditional saunas and steam saunas are shipped on a wooden pallet with removable bracing to protect the sauna boxes. Please contact us if you have special requirements for delivery. The trucking company will call you to schedule a delivery appointment.
Sauna Warranty
SunRay home saunas carry a 7-year structural warranty and 1-year parts warranty. All SunRay sauna parts, including electronic parts and the electric heater, are guaranteed for 1 year against defects.
Electrical Connection
Indoor traditional saunas for the home come with a power cord attached to the heater. The power cord does not have a plug. It is designed to be hard-wired into a junction box or you can put a plug on the end of the power cord. Please note that the power requirements differ by sauna model. Consult your traditional sauna user manual for the specific power requirements.
Assembly and Installation
An indoor traditional sauna is easily assembled by two adults. The typical assembly time is 1 hour. No special tools are required for the sauna to be assembled.
Cleaning Your Home Sauna
Your home sauna should be cleaned a minimum of every 3-4 months or more frequently depending on usage. To clean the interior of your home sauna, use a mixture of baking soda and water (3 teaspoons baking soda to 1 gallon of warm water). Using a clean towel, wipe down the interior of the sauna, focusing on where sweat accumulates. Let the area dry with the sauna door open. Use a standard ammonia-based glass cleaner to clean the sauna doors and windows.
Traditional Sauna Origin
SunRay traditional sauna cabins are constructed from Hemlock or Cedar wood imported from Canada. SunRay's manufacturing facility is in China and its distribution facility is in the United States. Warranty claims are handled by SunRay Saunas, based in Richmond, VA, and Topture helps you coordinate them.
Sauna Specification Sheets
Each SunRay sauna has a specification sheet with all the details of the kit, including the power requirements. Contact us if you would like a copy.
Placing an Indoor Sauna Outdoors
SunRay indoor traditional saunas are not rated for outdoor use. They have an open top that is not protected from the elements. If you place the indoor sauna outdoors, it must be covered and protected from the elements. Indoor saunas that are placed outdoors will not be covered under SunRay's sauna warranty.
Sauna Heating Time
The average heating time for traditional home saunas ranges between 30-45 minutes depending on the room temperature, size of the sauna, and the heater type.
Ceiling Clearance
You need at least 3-4 inches between the top of the home sauna and the ceiling. This allows the electrical components on the top of the sauna to receive the appropriate amount of airflow.
Sauna Stones
SunRay indoor traditional saunas come with heater stones that sit on top of the heater elements. The heater stones are used to help radiate heat throughout the sauna and can be used to create humidity inside the sauna. DO NOT pour excess water on the heater stones as it will cause damage to the heater. To create humidity in the sauna, simply drizzle a small amount of water over the stones once they are hot.
Sauna Heater Placement
All indoor traditional saunas are equipped with either a wall mounting bracket or cradle for the heater to sit in. DO NOT place the sauna heater directly on the floor as it could become a fire hazard. The sauna must be elevated off the floor to create airflow through the heating elements.
Sauna Lighting
All indoor traditional saunas come with ambient dome lighting. Saunas with dome lighting can be connected to the heater so that the light turns off when the heater turns off. Alternatively, you can wire the lighting separately on its own switch. Consult your sauna heating wiring guide for instructions on how to wire your sauna light into the heater.
