What is the HUUM UKU Local sauna controller?
The HUUM UKU Local is a control system for electric sauna heaters: a wall panel (black or wood) and a main module that switches the heater. You set the temperature, heating time and a start timer on the panel. It runs electric heaters up to 11 kW on its own, and heaters from 11 kW up to 18 kW together with the HUUM UKU Extension Box. The sauna heater is sold separately.
Does the UKU Local have app control?
No. The UKU Local is run from its wall panel. For app control, choose the HUUM UKU Wi-Fi, which lets you start the sauna from the HUUM app on your phone.
Black or wood panel: where can each go?
Black: plastic case, which HUUM's manual says must be installed outside the sauna room (if it is mounted outdoors, HUUM recommends a box to shield it from the weather, such as SaunaLife's Sauna Gear 300 enclosure). Wood: wooden case, which may go inside the sauna room, away from the heater, with its top edge no higher than 40" above the floor and at least 20" from an exhaust vent. For a panel recessed into the wall, HUUM makes the UKU Glass and UKU Mirror, both Wi-Fi models.
About HUUM
HUUM is an Estonian maker of sauna heaters and controllers, based in Tartu. HUUM introduced its first app-controlled sauna controllers in 2014, lists the UKU control system as made in Estonia, and says the UKU has won a Red Dot product design award.

The UKU Local still ships as UKU 4.1, with the one temperature sensor listed above, until the remaining 4.1 stock runs out. Its replacement, HUUM's UKU 4.2, adds a bench sensor that reads temperature and humidity at bench height; with it fitted, the highest temperature setting is 194°F (90°C).

How is the HUUM UKU Local installed?
HUUM's UKU manual says the electrical work may only be done by a licensed electrician, and recommends new wiring on a dedicated circuit. The door sensor must be installed: when the sauna door opens, it stops the heater within seconds.
The main module goes outside the sauna room; outdoors, HUUM says weatherproof housing can be added for extra protection against water, snow and condensation, such as SaunaLife's Sauna Gear 302 enclosure. If that isn't possible, HUUM allows it inside the sauna no higher than 4" above the floor and at least 59" from the heater, ideally under the bench. Where the panel goes depends on its case: the black plastic panel outside the sauna room, the wood panel inside it within the limits above.

HUUM warranty periods
HUUM's limited warranty (Limited Warranty Terms and Conditions, US, v2) covers new HUUM products bought from HUUM or its authorized dealers, such as Topture, against defects in materials and workmanship. The period starts on the date the end user buys the product.

HUUM counts as commercial use a business using the product commercially, a private owner using it commercially, or a private owner using it for more than 1,500 hours in 12 months.
What the warranty does not cover
- Heating elements of electric heaters
- HUUM accessories, such as rails, reflectors, flanges, protective bedding and chimney parts
- Door glass and ash grate of wood-burning stoves
- Sauna stones
- All controller sensors
- Damage from a heater that is the wrong size for the room, from unsuitable stones, or from installation, use or maintenance that does not follow HUUM's manuals
What keeps the warranty in effect
- Inspect the product when it arrives and report any visible damage within 7 days, with photos, before installing it.
- Install it following HUUM's manual and local building, electrical and fire codes. An electric product must be connected by a licensed electrician, with proof of the installation.
- Report a defect within 30 days of finding it. For products bought from Topture, report it to Topture, which passes the claim to HUUM and helps with troubleshooting.
