A 2 person traditional sauna comes in two broad categories, and the right one depends on where you plan to put it. Indoor traditional sauna kits use pre-assembled wall panels that bolt together inside a spare room, basement, or large closet. They don't need weather-rated wood or a foundation, so the total project cost is lower. The SunRay Baldwin is a hemlock cabin that fits a 42" x 59" footprint, and the SaunaLife X2 uses Nordic Spruce with Aspen interior and two-tier seating in a similarly compact frame.
Outdoor models rated for all-weather use need more planning up front. You're looking at a level foundation (gravel pad or concrete slab), weather-resistant wood, and a longer electrical run from your main panel. But you get a backyard sauna that doesn't take up interior square footage. SunRay's Solace barrel is built from Red Cedar and sized specifically for two. Dundalk's Granby cabin is handcrafted from Eastern White Cedar in Ontario and seats 2–3 comfortably.
Cedar, hemlock, Nordic Spruce, and Thermo-Spruce are the four woods you'll see across our 2 person traditional saunas. Eastern White Cedar (Dundalk, True North) is naturally rot-resistant, smells great when it heats up, and handles moisture cycling without warping. Hemlock (SunRay indoor models) is a durable softwood that holds up well under repeated heat exposure and stays smooth to the touch. Nordic Spruce and Thermo-Spruce (SaunaLife) are heat-treated for dimensional stability, which means less expansion and contraction over years of use.
Avoid saunas built with thin lumber or particle board. If the wall thickness is under 1.5", heat retention drops and you'll notice it on your electricity bill every month.
Most 2 person traditional saunas have an interior volume between 100 and 200 cubic feet. That's a small space to heat, which is good news: a 4.5kW to 6kW electric sauna heater handles the job. Harvia's KIP series starts at 4.5kW and mounts directly to the wall, keeping floor space open. HUUM's Drop at 4.5kW holds 121 lbs of stones for softer, longer-lasting steam.
Most kits in this size don't include a heater, and that's by design. It lets you pick the heater that matches your priorities, whether that's a high stone mass for quality löyly or a compact wall-mount to maximize bench room.
Every traditional sauna heater in this size range runs on 240V and requires a dedicated circuit. This isn't optional and isn't a DIY project. A licensed electrician needs to run the wiring, and indoor installs are straightforward since the panel is usually close. Outdoor installs cost more because of trenching and conduit. Our electrical requirements walkthrough covers what to discuss with your electrician before they come out.
SunRay offers the most indoor and outdoor 2 person traditional sauna options at accessible price points. Hemlock and Red Cedar construction, with Bluetooth audio on several models. The Baldwin is a no-frills indoor cabin that gets the job done, and the Solace is a compact Red Cedar barrel for outdoor use.
SaunaLife's X2 is a step up in materials and design. Nordic Spruce exterior with an Aspen interior and two-tier bench seating so you can choose your heat level. It ships as a kit that two people can assemble in 4–6 hours.
Dundalk LeisureCraft builds everything in Ontario from Eastern White Cedar. The Granby cabin is their smallest traditional sauna and seats 2–3 with a proper two-tier bench layout. If you want a pod shape instead, the MiniPOD fits the same capacity in a more compact footprint.
Kohler's C1 indoor sauna kit starts at a 2 person configuration in Scandinavian Spruce or Graphite Grey finish. It's a premium option with bathroom-grade engineering and a clean, modern look.
Every kit includes the sauna structure, benches, door, and hardware. Most models in this size don't include a heater or stones, so plan to add those separately. Assembly for a 2 person indoor unit takes 2–4 hours with two people and basic tools. Outdoor barrels and cabins take 4–8 hours depending on the style.
You'll need a level surface for outdoor units, a dedicated 240V electrical circuit installed by a licensed electrician, and enough clearance around the sauna for ventilation (2" minimum from any wall).
