What "Full Spectrum" Actually Means

Infrared light splits into three bands by wavelength. Near-infrared (NIR) covers roughly 0.76 to 1.5 microns and warms the skin's surface. Mid-infrared (MIR) sits between 1.5 and 5.6 microns and reaches soft tissue. Far-infrared (FIR) starts around 5.6 microns and penetrates deepest, driving the core temperature rise responsible for the cardiovascular response that traditional sauna research is built on.

A full-spectrum sauna emits all three wavelengths in the same cabin so a single session covers the surface, tissue, and deep-penetration ranges at once. A far-infrared sauna only emits the longest wavelengths, and that's perfectly fine if deep heat is the only thing you care about. Full-spectrum gives you a broader range without buying a separate cabin.

One thing to clear up: "full spectrum" describes what the heaters emit, not switchable zones. Cabins in this category emit all three wavelengths simultaneously from full-spectrum heater units. There's no toggle to run "just near-infrared" on residential systems. If a listing claims independently controllable wavelength channels, read the fine print carefully.

The Finnmark FD Series

The Trinity models add a second heat source. The FD-4 Trinity is a 2-person hybrid that combines full-spectrum infrared panels with a traditional electric heater and stones, plus red light therapy, in one 83 by 48 by 48 inch cabin with 2-tier seating. The FD-5 Trinity XL scales the same configuration to a 4-person footprint. How to Choose

Size to your household, then round down

A "4-person" infrared cabin comfortably holds 2 adults who want room to recline. If you're buying for daily solo use, the FD-1 or FD-2 makes more sense than the FD-3, because smaller cabins heat faster and cost less to run. Households with 3+ regular users or guests in rotation are the ones that actually use the FD-3's footprint. Err smaller. Wasted space costs heat-up time and electricity every session.

Infrared only or infrared plus traditional

If you only want lower-temperature infrared sessions in the 120 to 150°F range, the FD-1 through FD-3 are the move. If you also want the option to do high-heat traditional sessions at 170°F+ with löyly (water over heated stones), the Trinity FD-4 or FD-5 is the upgrade: same room, both modes, plus red light therapy. There's no middle ground, and switching later means a new cabin.

EMF and heater quality

EMF exposure is a fair thing to check on any infrared sauna because you sit inches from the emitter panels. Indoor space and electrical

Every FD cabin is designed for indoor use: finished basement, garage, sunroom, or a dedicated wellness room all work. Plan on 12 inches of clearance on three sides for airflow and service access. The FD-1 and FD-2 typically run on a standard 120V/20A dedicated circuit. The FD-3, FD-4, and FD-5 need a 240V dedicated circuit because of the higher heater draw. Materials and Build

Every FD cabin uses thermo-aspen for interior benches and walls. Aspen has naturally low thermal conductivity, so it stays comfortable against bare skin even at peak temperature, a meaningful difference from cheaper commodity softwoods. The thermal treatment process (heating to 400°F+ in oxygen-free conditions) strengthens that property further and makes the wood splinter-free and dimensionally stable through repeat heat cycles.

Exteriors are finished in cabin-modern styling with tempered glass fronts. Clean lines, flush bench hardware, no exposed fasteners. The cabin reads as furniture rather than gym equipment, which matters when it's sitting in a room you spend time in every day. Bluetooth audio and red light therapy are standard across the FD series.

What's Included and What You'll Need

FD cabins arrive pre-panelized on a freight pallet. Wall, roof, and floor panels are already built, so your job is connecting them with the included hardware, seating the heaters and glass, and plugging in. Two people can finish the build in 2 to 4 hours with basic tools. No carpentry, no wiring work inside the cabinet itself.

The one outside task is the dedicated electrical circuit, which should be handled by a licensed electrician familiar with local code. Floor surface isn't critical: concrete, tile, hardwood, and engineered flooring all work for indoor installations. Allow swing clearance for the glass door and the full 12-inch service gap on the three solid sides.
