When to Choose 10.5kW Over 9kW

People overthink this tier, but the decision is usually simple: if your sauna is over 450 cubic feet, or if it has a full-glass front wall, you want 10.5kW.

Glass-front saunas radiate heat outward faster than insulated-wood saunas. A 500 cu ft cabin with a full-glass front performs like a 580 cu ft insulated room when sizing the heater. 9kW can heat it, but it'll struggle to recover after you throw water on the stones — temperatures drop 30–40°F and take 5–7 minutes to climb back. 10.5kW recovers in 2–3 minutes.

The other case for 10.5kW is room shape. Long, narrow saunas with benches running the full length need more power to heat the volume evenly than a compact square room with the same cubic footage. When in doubt on an outdoor sauna over 400 cu ft, step up.

10.5kW Options by Brand

HUUM CLIFF 10.5kW — Freestanding pillar design, 200 lbs stone capacity. Covers up to 635 cu ft. Pairs with any UKU controller (local, WiFi, WiFi Glass, WiFi Mirror). Max temp 230°F. The CLIFF 10.5kW Package bundles the heater, UKU controller, stones, and safety rail.

HUUM HIVE Mini 10.5kW — Cylindrical floor-standing design, 330 lbs stone capacity. The heaviest 10.5kW in the collection. Fits mid-to-large rooms where you want serious löyly without stepping up to the full HIVE. Includes UKU controller in the bundled package.

HUUM DROP 9kW tops out at 9kW — HUUM doesn't make a 10.5kW DROP. If you want a wall-mount HUUM in this power range, you'll need to go CLIFF (freestanding) or HIVE Mini (column floor-standing).

Harvia Virta 10.5kW (HL110E) — Premium wall-mount, 150 lbs stone capacity, stainless construction. Pairs with Xenio CX170 or CX45 controller. The most common 10.5kW choice — Harvia's most-installed model at this power level. Available as an individual heater or in a bundled Virta 10.5kW Package with controller, WiFi, and stones.

Harvia Virta Combi 10.5kW (HL110SA) — The Virta 10.5kW with a built-in steam generator for combination dry/steam sessions. Requires the CX30C combi controller (included in the bundled package).

Harvia Cilindro Half 10.5kW — Column wall-mount design, 264 lbs stone capacity — the highest Harvia stone load at this power level. Mid-to-large rooms with limited wall space. Available with external Xenio controller.

Saunum Air L 10kW / 15kW — Saunum's large-room heater with the climate equalizer fan system that distributes temperature evenly between upper and lower benches. The 10kW version is close enough to 10.5kW to cover the same room sizes. Worth a look if uneven heat is your sauna's biggest annoyance.

Electrical Requirements for 10.5kW

This is where 10.5kW diverges from 9kW in a way that matters:

• Amperage draw: 43.75 amps at full load on 240V
• Breaker size: 50A dedicated breaker (125% of continuous load)
• Wire gauge: 6 AWG copper for most runs. 4 AWG for long runs (over 80 feet) or aluminum
• Panel capacity: Older homes with 100A or 150A panels may need a sub-panel upgrade — a 50A dedicated circuit eats up meaningful headroom

The 6 AWG wire requirement is the biggest difference from 9kW. It's thicker, more expensive per foot, and harder to bend through conduit. If you're running power 50+ feet from the panel to an outdoor sauna, wire cost alone can add $300–$500 over a 9kW install. Some 10.5kW models (Virta Combi, Club) are also available in 208V three-phase for commercial installs. If you're in a commercial building with three-phase service, three-phase is actually easier on the wiring — lower amperage per leg.

What Room Size Does 10.5kW Fit?

Manufacturer ratings typically list 330–635 cu ft. In practice:

• 330–450 cu ft (overkill unless glass-heavy): 9kW is usually the smarter pick unless the room has heavy glass
• 450–550 cu ft (sweet spot): 5–6 person outdoor cabins, glass-front cube saunas, oversized barrel saunas
• 550–635 cu ft (at the edge): 6-person cabins, outdoor saunas with changing rooms, rooms with full-glass walls on two sides
• 635+ cu ft: Step up to 12kW or larger — typically HUUM HIVE or Harvia Club territory

The most common 10.5kW install: a 4-person to 6-person outdoor cube sauna with a full-glass front. That's the exact room profile the SaunaLife CL7G and CL12GCP, plus most mid-range outdoor cube saunas, were designed around.

Every 10.5kW heater in this collection supports WiFi app control. HUUM models pair with the UKU WiFi (black, white, wood, glass, or mirror finishes). Remote start at higher wattages (10.5kW qualifies) may require a door-open safety sensor per local electrical code — check with your electrician. Some jurisdictions require the sauna to verify the door is open (meaning no one is trapped inside with a running heater) before allowing remote activation.

Stone capacity at 10.5kW varies dramatically by model: HUUM CLIFF needs 200 lbs, HUUM HIVE Mini needs 330 lbs, Harvia Virta needs 150 lbs, Harvia Cilindro Half needs 264 lbs. Always use proper olivine diabase stones from the heater brand — available through our sauna rock collection. Fill the basket to capacity; a half-filled basket on a 10.5kW defeats the thermal mass advantage.
