The Drop is the heater that put HUUM on the map. A teardrop-shaped stainless steel cage, wall-mounted, packed with 121 lbs of stones — it won a Red Dot design award in 2015 and has stayed in the lineup essentially unchanged because the design works. The cage profile keeps the heating elements deeply nested in stone mass, which is what produces the soft, humid steam HUUM's known for. If you've been comparing options across the HUUM electric heater range, the Drop is where most home buyers land.
The physical heater is the same size across all four wattages — 23" tall, 15.4" wide, 13.2" deep. What changes between models is the number and arrangement of internal heating elements, which dictates how much room volume the heater can hold at temperature. That's it. So sizing a Drop is mostly about matching kW to the cubic footage of your sauna, not picking between different physical units.
The Drop comes in 4.5kW (106–247 cu ft), 6kW (177–353 cu ft), 7.5kW (230–441 cu ft), and 9kW (282–530 cu ft). Most indoor 2-person home saunas land in the 4.5kW–6kW range. The 7.5kW is the workhorse for 3–4 person indoor builds. The 9kW handles full outdoor cabins and larger barrel saunas. When you're on the line between two sizes, go up — glass doors, tile, and cold-wall surfaces all pull effective capacity down, and an undersized heater is a heater that never quite gets there.
Every Drop runs on 240V single-phase. The 4.5kW pulls 18.75 amps and needs a 30A breaker on 10 AWG wire. The 6kW also lands on a 30A circuit. The 7.5kW jumps to a 40A breaker on 8 AWG. The 9kW needs a 50A circuit on 8 AWG. None of these can be pulled off a shared breaker — each heater needs a dedicated circuit, and the install has to be done by a licensed electrician. Our sauna electrical requirements guide walks through the rough-in details before your electrician shows up.
The Drop is wall-mount by default and ships with a wall bracket. If you want a flush-mount install where the heater sits partly inside a custom bench, HUUM makes a Drop embedding flange that covers the cut rim of the bench opening. The same install benefits from the Drop drip tray, which catches water runoff from löyly sessions and keeps the area under the heater clean. Both are Drop-specific — they won't fit other HUUM models.
Most electric heaters cage a thin layer of stones around exposed elements. The Drop does the opposite — the elements sit deep inside roughly 121 lbs of olivine stones, so what you feel coming off the heater is heat radiated through thermal mass, not heat blowing past metal coils. The practical difference is that when you throw water on a Drop, the room fills with humid löyly instead of a brief hiss followed by dry air. Recovery time between water pours is fast because the stones don't lose temperature.
You'll need about 4 boxes of HUUM olivine stones (roughly 44 lbs per box) to fill a Drop. Use 2"–4" rounded stones — HUUM's spec calls specifically for rounded olivine to maintain even airflow between elements. Pack the basket fully. A half-filled Drop is a Drop that doesn't perform the way it was designed to.
The Drop won't run without a HUUM UKU controller — HUUM deliberately decoupled the brain from the heater so you can choose your interface. Browse the full lineup in our UKU controller collection, but here's the short version: UKU Local is a wired wall panel, no WiFi, for buyers who don't want their sauna on the internet. UKU WiFi adds the HUUM mobile app — preheat from your phone on the drive home, schedule recurring sessions. UKU Glass and UKU Mirror are the WiFi version with premium glass or mirror finishes for a minimalist look.
For the Drop specifically, any UKU works. The Drop never exceeds 9kW, so you don't need the UKU Extension Box that the larger HUUM models require. If you'd rather not source the controller and stones separately, our HUUM electric heater packages bundle the heater, UKU controller of your choice, stones, and a safety rail at a package price.
The Drop is the wall-mount choice. If you want a floor-standing heater, the HUUM Hive is the cylindrical alternative — same design philosophy, much heavier stone load (up to 595 lbs), built for larger rooms and commercial spas. The HUUM Cliff is the angular freestanding pillar with 200 lbs of stones, a step up in löyly intensity for 5–6 person cabins. The HUUM Hive Mini is the Hive's smaller sibling for mid-size rooms. And the HUUM Steel is the budget entry point — wall-mount like the Drop but with a more traditional rectangular shell and smaller stone capacity.
Choose the Drop when you want the iconic teardrop look, wall-mount installation to save floor space, and enough stone mass to deliver proper Finnish steam in a typical home sauna up to 4–5 people. If you need more thermal mass than 121 lbs, step up to a Hive or Cliff. If you need less, the Steel is the more compact wall-mount option.
The Drop reaches a 230°F surface — the highest max temp in the home sauna category — so a Drop safety rail isn't optional in any sauna where benches sit close to the heater. It keeps bodies and towels at a safe distance from the cage. The embedding flange and drip tray we covered above are install-time decisions. Stones are mandatory before the heater can be turned on. If you're sourcing parts à la carte, plan on heater + UKU controller + stones + safety rail as the minimum order.
HUUM's warranty is 3 years on the heater body and UKU controller for residential use, valid only through authorized dealers like Topture. Grey-market Drops from Amazon and eBay resellers often aren't covered by HUUM even when the product appears identical — confirm the dealer before you order. We're an authorized HUUM dealer, ship every Drop free, and our team's available if you hit a question during install.
