What Makes the Legend Series Different

The Legend is Harvia's flagship wood-burning sauna stove, and it's built around one idea: maximize stone mass so you get smoke-sauna-style steam without the smoke sauna. The patinated black steel cage is open on the sides and packed with stones, holding up to 264 lbs on the smaller Legend 150 and more on the 240 and 300. When you ladle water onto that thermal mass, you get the soft, humid, long-lasting löyly that traditional Finnish saunas are known for. Most wood stoves give you a sharp blast of steam that fades in seconds. The Legend gives you a slow, enveloping wave.

Construction is heavier than the entry-level Harvia stoves. Thick steel firebox, cast-iron framed glass door so you actually see the flames, and a 10-mm fire chamber rated for the temperature swings of wood-burning use. Hand-finished in Finland. Harvia has been making sauna stoves since 1950, and the Legend is the line they put their name on when they want to show off.

Why Wood-Burning Instead of Electric

Most people buying a sauna pick electric. It's faster, easier, and doesn't require a chimney. But wood-burning has real advantages that electric can't match.

You don't need an electrical hookup. That alone makes the Legend the right pick for cabins, off-grid builds, or backyard saunas where running a dedicated 240V circuit isn't realistic. There's no electrician bill, no permit headache for the wiring, no breaker to trip. Fire and stones.

The experience is different too. Building the fire, hearing it crackle behind the cast-iron door, watching the embers. That's the ritual most people think of when they picture an authentic Finnish sauna. Electric heaters can produce the same temperatures, but they can't produce the same atmosphere. And the heat itself is softer because the stone mass on the Legend is so much larger than what fits inside an electric heater of equivalent power. The Legend Models in This Collection

Legend 150 (WK150LD), 16kW. The entry point and the model most home buyers land on. Heats sauna rooms from 212 to 459 cubic feet, which covers most 2–4 person home saunas. 264 lbs of stones, top or rear flue connection, 15-inch maximum log length. The Legend 150 is the right call for a typical indoor or barrel-sized outdoor sauna.

Legend 150 SL (WK150LDSL), 16kW with extended feed. Same heater, same room range, but with a through-the-wall fuel feed extension so you can load wood from outside the sauna room, or from outside the building entirely if it's an outdoor build. Useful if you don't want bark, ash, or cold drafts coming through the sauna door every time you stoke the fire. The Legend 150 SL ships at the same base power as the standard 150.

Legend 240 SL (WK240LDSL), 21kW. The mid-size workhorse with a through-wall feed. Rated for 353 to 848 cubic feet, which puts it in 4–6 person outdoor saunas and larger cabin builds. Step up to the Legend 240 SL if your sauna is at the top end of what the 150 handles, or if the room loses heat fast (lots of glass, exterior door, cold climate).

Legend 240 Duo (WKLE20DUOM), 21kW dual install. Same 21kW output as the 240 SL but configured for either interior loading or through-wall, your choice at install. The 240 Duo is the option for buyers who haven't decided how they want to load the stove yet, or for installers who want the flexibility on site.

Legend 300 (WK300LD), 23.5kW. The biggest stove in the line. Designed for sauna rooms from 494 to 988 cubic feet, large residential saunas, commercial installs, or oversized cabin builds. Bigger firebox, bigger stone basket, taller body. The Legend 300 is overkill for a 4-person room but exactly right when you need to heat a serious volume of air without taking three hours to get there.

Sizing the Right Legend for Your Room

The room volume ranges above are the published Harvia figures. Stay inside those ranges and the heater will perform. Push outside them and you'll either struggle to reach temperature (heater undersized) or destroy the wood (heater oversized for the room).

A few practical adjustments. Cold climate, lots of exterior wall, or any significant glass in the design? Size up to the next model. Indoor sauna with R-value insulation everywhere? You can sit at the upper end of a smaller heater's range without issues. Outdoor saunas in winter benefit from the bigger stoves even when the cubic footage suggests otherwise, because wood-burning starts cold and a larger firebox gets the room to operating temperature faster. One more thing worth checking before you order: the maximum firewood length is 15 inches across the Legend lineup. If you're planning to split your own wood from a local supplier, confirm they can deliver at 14 to 15 inches. Too long and the door won't close cleanly.

Chimney, Clearances, and What Else You Need

The heater alone isn't a complete install. You'll need a chimney kit. We carry the Harvia WHP1500 chimney kit in both stainless and black steel, which is the Legend-compatible flue system. Roof flashing, lead-through insulation, and a rain cap are all part of that kit. Stones are typically sold separately. Harvia Olivine Diabase is the standard match and what we recommend over generic landscape rock, which cracks under wood-burning heat cycles.

Clearances matter on a wood-burning install. The Legend 150 needs roughly 20 inches of clearance in front (where the door opens), about 4 inches behind to non-combustible walls or 10 inches to combustible, and 3 feet of vertical clearance from the top of the heater to the ceiling. Larger models need proportionally more. The full clearance table is in each product page's spec sheet, so read it before you frame the room. The WL200 protective sheath panel reduces the rear clearance requirement when wall space is tight, and the WL300 stone cage for the chimney pipe is worth adding if you want extra thermal mass and a more dramatic steam burst when water hits the heater.

Legend vs. GreenFlame vs. Pro

Harvia makes three wood-burning lines and people regularly mix them up. The differences come down to stone mass and steam quality.

The GreenFlame is Harvia's clean-burning, EPA-certified line. Lower emissions, faster heating, smaller stone capacity. Great for areas with wood-stove regulations or buyers who care about efficiency over maximum steam. The Pro series sits in the middle, with solid heat output and moderate stone load. It's the workhorse choice for buyers who want a no-nonsense wood stove without paying for the Legend's premium build. The Legend is the top of the line: heaviest construction, largest stone mass, best löyly. You pay for it, and if steam quality is what you care about most, you'll feel the difference every time you ladle water on the rocks.

The Harvia Linear line is a separate animal. It's the rectangular wood-burning stove with a wide front face, designed for buyers who want the wood-burning experience in a more modern silhouette.
